When will their be a decent display technology that's cheap and doesn't drain battery like crazy?

there* ha
Mirasol.

LEDs are already inexpensive as shit as far as lighting is concerned.
If you're waiting for e-ink to become a real vialbe thing, you're not going to have fun.
Never because every retards wants more pixels instead of power efficiency.
Manufacturers won't make ips 144hz 1080p displays because they want you to move on to 1440
OLED displays exist and consume little to no energy when a pixel is black. With OLED display and a dark theme for everything, battery drain from the screen will be negligible. It also has literally infinite contrast ratio, good colors, is readable just fine on sunny days.
Why are there no laptops with OLED displays? Why are there no OLED monitors? Why do only phones and TVs use this technology? Because fuck you.

Burn in.

X1 Yoga has OLED

Not really a problem today, OLEDs advanced a lot. Also, I probably won't give a fuck.

Cool, didn't hear about that. Checked out benchmarks, apparently, OLED screens have a higher power consumtion than IPS when showing a white screen. Also, no burn-in reports.
I want an OLED monitor to work at night. Pure black background, nothing will emit light, only letters on the screen. I want it so much I'd fucking assemble it out of laptop panels, but there simply aren't any. You can buy some hobbyist 20x60 pixel shit, some phone-sized 5" ones, but there are no 10-30" sized panels in existence (checked out - no X1 Yoga OLED screens available, too).
I don't want to program on a fucking TV or a bunch of glued-together phone screens, I want a proper monitor with a deepest black color that is technically possible.
