Will there be any significant shift to Mac/Linux/BSD/other operating systems? Or will people reluctantly install Windows 10?
>>
Reminder that people still use Windows XP
>>
>>61626001
Holdouts will just move to the latest version then start claiming it's somehow better than the versions they skipped.

7 is basically vista and XPfags cried and cried over it until they had to upgrade and suddenly 7 became good in their eyes despite it just being a rebranded vista

Normies will. They say they want privacy, but they won't lift a finger to get it. They fight very hard to avoid thinking though, and like blindly following directions or just having everything set up for them.
>>
>>61626132

7 is Vista with all of the shit Vista did wrong fixed. Just like how Windows 10 is 8, except they didn't fix anything and broke even more shit.

I'd sooner jump to OSX than any future Windows. Linux is out of the question too, I fell for that shit meme already.
>>
>>61626001
>Or will people reluctantly install Windows 10?

Literate folks who are actually reluctant to use Win10 are a minority, most have probably already moved to linux. The other holdouts who are too retarded to use a linux distro will just use 10.

ps i once saw an ubuntu at a friends house didn't receive updates since its installation,
because he disabled them and "stuff might break". LTS is a fine concept, if you know what you are doing,
but most people out there are stupid idiots. certainly those corperate sysadmins coming from windows,
for whom its more important to them that people can work than that shit is secure. thats why ransomware
is so successfull. i expect a move to chromebooks for this exact reasons and a lot of them loosing their job

How bad is Windows 10 on the privacy front versus Windows 7? It's getting harder and harder to find a laptop with W7.
>>
>>61630258
It took several lawsuit threats from EU before they toned collecting down and finally properly list what is collected and had to make an even more stripped down version of it to chinese.

Read between the lines.

It is bad but you can have somewhat same level of privacy using Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB.

You can turn off most of it in the installation menu before you install it, and then there's a third party program that's constantly updated to disable the rest of it.

vista had a vastly superior GUI and features, if you aren't using an OS for its GUI/feature set, then your opinion on the matter is meaningless.
>>
>>61632935
Depends. For a lot of cases it's literally just updating windows (even if just security updates if possible). For some it's disabling features, blocking ports, uninstalling certain programs, etc. So it all depends, but if you're purposefully keeping a system outdated, you definitely have to put in some extra effort working around that. Or just not connect it to the internet.

Enterprise LTSB is essentially an embedded version of W10. Supposed to be used for single use machines, like ATMs, hospital equipment etc. It's 10 but only gets security updates instead of feature updates. Comes with no Cortana, no Store no Apps no Edge. Supported for 10 years, and doesn't nag you to update to (Whatever) Update that ships every few months to Home and Pro version like the current Creators Update.
>>
>>61626001
Windows install with only games on it so even if it gets infected, I'll just wipe it and reinstall it again, basically it becomes just another video game console. I hardly play my consoles these days anyways, so I'll probably end up dropping games altogether. Then I can just drop my life.
>>
>>61628458
W7 is basically Vista SP3.
>>
>>61633783

Proper SSD support and better resources management, just because you can see the changes don't mean they doesn't exist. Also afaik some XP drivers can work on seven 32 bits since I've already managed to install an old HP printer driver with XP only support on it.
Also, by your retarded statement I think you also consider 98 as a 95 SP and XP a 2000 SP.
>>
>>61632969
Uac was shit on Vista
Focus on new dumb features like gadgets was distracting.
Look was too bubbly and shiny.
Bad driver support because oems were extremely behind the ball on what Vista required.

I personally endured the agony of the damn boot record breaking every few restarts. Since Vista's startup repair was useless (if it even had that, I don't remember), I had to boot from dvd and manually fixboot, etc. I didn't know how to do that at first though, so for like a month I was reinstalling Vista about once a week.

One day the whole mbr was fucked, so I spent an entire weekend learning Linux data recovery tools to get my mom's family photos off the disk, since of course we had no backups. After that fiasco, and having learned what Linux was, I installed Ubuntu dual booting. It was gusty gibbon or hardy heron I believe. The Vista boot issues went away since now grub was handling booting, and my mom started using Ubuntu exclusively since "It's way faster and I like the earthy colors". It was basically a picture viewer and Myspace machine to her, so yeah it worked out. Been Linux4life ever since. I use Win7 for work and it's pretty nice, but Vista will always conjure sour thoughts for me.

Thanks for reading my blog.

is still shit on 10, and 8.1, 8, 7 especially.

were objectively better, more features and far more useful features that were changed/removed/broken upon 7s release (homegroup, not only shit, but a massive security risk)

Ehh... Okay? W7 also gained USB 3.0 support in it's lifetime, it's not like every little feature justifies calling it a new OS.
>better resource management
That's what you'd except for every update I guess.

I said major changes to Windows, not incremental updates. I mean, that's what Service Packs are literally made for, right? Batching incremental updates? There were very few design changes, and that's it really.

>>
>>61634463
You must be really retarded to think a whole fixed OS with completely new features and tweaked older is just a Service Pack. I bet you are also a dumb Vista user.
>>
>>61634272
Vista uac locked up the machine for a good 30 seconds and caused the display to lose signal, walk through its inputs, and turn back on. Fuck you. This was an annoying problem for a lot of people.

Gadgets were pointless resource hogs that I, as a 16 year old, immediately identified as childish toys. Might as well just go full rainmeter if you want to rice in 200X.

The aesthetics were xp, but glass. Uninspired imo, but this is subjective. I thought it was wasteful, which it was. Not many computers handled the extra paint load too well on launch.

I bet you don't blame the os when Linux or an Apple os has shit drivers, huh? Microsoft is a big boy company and they should have had their shit together. When you buy an oem machine and the goddamn usb doesn't work you have issues. Microsoft clearly dropped the ball because they managed to get all that fixed by 7.

>Happens on any drive
Drive wasn't bad. Passed surface scans, worked with Ubuntu without fail, and worked fine with Vista after grub was installed. The computer continued to work without any major issues for about five years until it was replaced. Vista's initial boot process was raping itself on my machine for whatever reason.

Vista was a buggy mess with almost no hardware support for over a year after release. Sure, fully patched with a couple of years of fixes and it works fine, but at that point it was basically 7. Microsoft knew they fucked the image so they rebranded and re-released. Accept it: Vista was the beta for 7.

Kys nostalgiafag.
>>
>>61634617
That's what happens when you start developing a system based on XP, notice you fucked it up badly and have to restart the whole development process with little to no time.
>>
>>61634551
>completely new features
Like what? I'm still waiting.
>tweaked older
Launch XP was a fucking mess. It was only usable on SP1, and SP2 made it golden. You don't need a new OS for tweaks. Likewise, Vista SP2 was actually pretty good.

7 is a rebranded Vista, accept it. There's nothing new on it, aside from removing the shitty impression Vista had.

Okay, so whats the big problem with Windows 10?
It isn't great but when has Microsoft ever been great. I was using a computer with XP up till 3 years ago, a brief stint with windows 7, and my new laptop came with Windows 10.
It does create picture albums on its on with no way to disable it but it seems pretty strait forward to me.
>>
>>61634684
Vista was a very important step though. It's just that Microsoft was doing xp for so long, they forgot how to actually make a coherent design. Somehow 7 worked out okay, but they still have coherency and consistency issues to this day.
>>
>>61634688
Nigga, I don't think you know what a service pack is. It only provides FIXES, not anything new like a interface. 7 is exactly the same thing 2, 98, ME and XP were, improved versions of a previous version, by no means just a patch.
>>
>>61634831
>but they still have coherency and consistency issues to this day.
>still
Windows 10 is a incoherent mess, Microsoft just doesn't know how to consistency anymore.
>>
>>61634688

How many W7 desktops do you /g/ents think belong to corporations?
From the statistics it would look like people massively decided to refuse 10, but it might very well be large corporations owning thousands of computers that are still running 7.

Very interesting thread.

I really would like to make the switch, please tell me what's the best way to go for me.

Software I use:

Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Lightroom. Luxion Keyshot, 3DS Max Design, Rhinoceros 5, SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

Others: Spotify (and not willing to change), VLC, text editor, note taking software and several browsers (yes, including the botnet).

Games: Overwatch, Black Ops 3, moded skyrim, Bayonetta, planning to get Doom, etc.

Is a hackintosh a plausible idea or would you recommend me a Linux distro?.

Also, about my games library, should I keep windows in another drive just for that?

computers will not become better versions of what they are, they will broaden out across fields, becoming ubiquitous, penetrating interests and industries that they haven't already with new generalist and specialist devices. I think AR is the next cab off the rank to be big.
>>
>>61632939
Dude, I installed KDE through my package manager and then tried to log into it, and it broke, what other precautions should i have taken. Ended up getting to a recovery console and sorting it out, was an Nvida driver issue. But when trying to run a DE crashes X and breaks video drivers, you have to question the day to day workabilty of the OS and software available.
