Study A+ to understand hardware. Then Network+ gives you a few areas you can learn about, see what you like, then go from there. Personally, I took a networking course at my school and from that, learned I like security. Now I'm going for compsec

Alright, same plan, but from network + go to security +, CSA+, whatever Cisco has in this range. Follow the Comptia road map for certifications. Even if you don't take them, the books will kind of build as well as give a sense of progression.
