The dock remains at the bottom of the screen when you make an application full screen. It also remains on top of all other windows, so that area of the screen is basically useless as anything other than a dock. Unless you put something like linux on it you don't actually get the benefit of 16:10.

Well on Windows machines, the hardware manufacturer usually has their own driver for Windows, but may not provide one for Linux, so the Linux devs need to create a driver for it, for instance. Also there are proprietary drivers that may not always work out of the box and sometimes you may need the mainline kernel.
