Just wondering, are the people on here actually serious when they recommend Linux, or is it some kind of inside joke?

I spent a few weeks trying to use Linux as my main OS, everything is just needlessly complicated compared to Windows 7, it has no where near as good software/hardware compatibility and I couldn't really see any benefits to using it at all. It seems like you spend ten times as long fiddling with your OS than you do actually being productive.
>>
>>61601914
Linux, or GNU/Linux as I've come to calling it, is pretty much an OS for NEET's with way too much time on their hands. It's predominantly used by virgins to want to feel like hackers. There's really no reason to use it that I can think of, if you don't like Windows 10 being a botnet (tinfoil hat tier) just use 8.1 or 7.
>>

Powershell is a more universal useful language than the Unix shell, but if I wanted that, I'd use SBCL for my login shell. The Unix shell is good precisely because it is specialized in just the right way for shell tasks, and that's also what makes Powershell less useful for that purpose, in just the same way that general-purpose languages are pretty useless as shells.
>>
>>61611182
Unix shells are based on text manipulation only, while Powershell is based on .NET and allows direct manipulation of objects. In other words you have access to the .NET framework directly from the command line, and commands can output rich objects (with distinct properties) instead of just a wall of text you need to parse manually.

Also Windows is more consistent when it comes to automating. In Windows there's one way to do it. For example, you manipulate the wifi networks probably through WMI. On Linux, you need to know first which network manager are you running (NetworkManager, netctl or whatever). This script wouldn't be portable to another Linux machine unless it's running the same network manager.
>>
>>61611905
Powershell is specialized in being a shell, as its name implies.
>Powershell less useful for that purpose

>what is research?
In research the general setup is that everyone gets a Linux workstation for everyday work, and then there's a few shared Windows boxes for whenever they're needed. This works because pretty much everything that needs to do can be done in Linux.
>what is clustering?
The Windows equivalents have never provided anywhere near the same level of stability and configurability as Linux.
>what is machine learning?
Most of the deep learning software is still being developed, and tends to be developed in Linux.

The thing that had me wonder was Arch, since it's very likely to be problematic when you run updates.
>>
>>61614439
It is, yes. We tried Linux Mint before, didn't really have any experience with it but it sounded like a nice go-to for someone coming from windows.
Idk if it was something she did but the thing kernel panicked in no time ontop of KWin giving me a massive headache from the get-go. We tried debian stable and stuff was too dated for half the things she wanted to do with it.

So I went ahead and just installed what I've been using all along and I'm just glad it just works. We don't update it unless she needs a new feature like the smartphone file transfer I mentioned or calibre but that almost never happens.
You see Arch wasn't my first choice but we've had almost no issues since. I did one or two -Syus and sure enough something broke (xserver) but it wasnt unfixable.

Linux isn't bad initially when you don't know what you're doing. It becomes a problem when you realize that it's really not very secure, has poor tools for performing security analysis in a timely manner, and can't handle modern hardware in any meaningful way.

It's good for servers but ultimately, the neverending shitfuck that is desktop linux will waste hundreds of hours of your time, guaranteed. Every linux DE feels like buggy malware and tiling WMs despite what you've heard, are not good for being productive unless you're the one percent of one percent who is a paid at-home programmer. Poor support for modern hardware and especially high-dpi displays is incredibly tiresome. Putting off buying a new machine indefinitely because re-ricing for a new hardware with different dimensions is a pain in the ass is really no way to live.

If you want to stay on Windows, learn powershell. Seriously, skip the Linux detour and just learn powershell.

If you like macOS, try out *BSD or Linux then return.

Should someday something like gnome not be just a shitty memory leaking sack of garbage, I might change my mind but until then I'll be using linux for servers and servers only.

If Linux had the same marketshare, it would be infested with viruses the same second.

For example, to find out dependencies, ldd actually fucking runs the executable with a custom environment variable and expects the executable to acknowledge it.

You have to literally run every command prefixed with apparmor for Linux to be somewhat secure.
