FUCK COMCAST

How does this popup hijack a website? How does it get past my popup blocker? How does it even inject itself into the website?

FUCK COMCAST

its injected when you visit a non https webpage. I just got one last night. fucking 1TB limit is pathetic.

How are you guys doing this?
>>
>>61596409
I'm streaming television. I hit 90% every month. The point is, how the fuck does this thing barge into my browser?

Comcast has no permission to inject popups into someone else's website. What else could they inject to a connection? They could pwn someone's entire computer with this.
>>
>>61596361
Its probably a script in the router
>>
>>61596361

Move to the northeast already. There are no caps here.

Injected at the DNS server. Cox does it when they want you to get a new modem.
>>
>>61596446
I have a family of 5 in this house and every single kid streams Netflix, Sling, Youtube or some such simultaneously.

This should be illegal, frankly. As if daughter hasn't already downloaded enough malware to begin with.
>>
>>61596477
You might want to torrent some kids shows, anon.
Buy some box sets, too.
>giving children computers

Season 3 of Fargo is like 55GB. I downloaded at least 6 TV series this month each between 30-60GB each.

fucking datalets

they inject it through none secure webpages. aka 4chin
>>

it is in 1st world countries
>>

Does this mean HTTPS everywhere is a meme? Because I have it installed and it injected anyway.
>>

serves you right for having kids, faggot
>>
>>61596361
God damn you guys are unlucky. I downloaded 905 TB of data in 2015 alone. On a single wire, single contract, single house. Nobody called me, nobody gave me looks, nobody said something like "anon, oh my god anon you should quit it and stop doing it because feds are onto you". Nobody called me, even tho I pirated a shit ton. And to this date, nobody said a word. Download quantity aprox 905 TB down 170~ TB up.
>>

why should it be illegal? its a fucking harmless warning

I'm truly the faggot here, you saw through me. The only unwise life-choice I'd like to discuss here is apparently which country I choose to live in, because the only other ISP here is CenturyLink and their connection is absolutely worthless (I used to have them.)
>>
>>61596361
I hear that Comcast doenst really give a fuck, and doesnt charge overage charges unless you go full server mode and pull like 10+tb

>>
lmao fiber optic bro here to tell you lmao
>>
>>61596538
Because they pwned my DNS connection to do so. They injected a popup onto a domain they did not own and insert it into my browser.
>>
>>61596562
>and doesnt charge overage charges unless you go full server mode and pull like 10+tb
they actually do. Its automatically added to your bill

its 5 dollars for every 10gb you go over the limit
>>
>>61596572
>EVEN THE GYPSIES HAVE BETTER INTERNET
that's because they cut your cable and steal yours lol

not onto a domain, onto your computer itself through your router.
>>

That seems wrong.
>>
>>61596579
>They injected a popup onto a domain they did not own
Your ISP owns the DNS server. They didnt inject into the webpage you're visiting. It's more of an overlay that's tacked on.
Be happy that's all they're doing.
>>
>>61596594
This is fucking ridiculous. Unbelievable. Free software is a joke if the hardware used to connect to the Internet is proprietary and can inject data you didn't ask for into your browser.
>>
>>61596623
There's no way to trust that that's all they're doing. The point is they should not have such a dangerous capability in the first place.
>>
>>61596636
see
>>61596623
>>
>>61596647
>muh blind dangers

The same way they put a message on your screen is the same way they measure your datacap

Verizon does this too in how they collect what servers and IP's you visit. Its the SAME shit, theres nothing dangerous about it.
>>
>>61596647
You don't have to use your ISP's DNS servers retard
>>
did you know HTTPS is a spook anyway
and your ISP just does what it wants
because it controls your internet
>>
>>61596647
switch to google's DNS, its 8.8.8.8
>>
>>61596647

Well, okay, but this shouldn't be news to you. This isn't any more than they could already do. They're literally the middleman between you and the Internet. Of course they could do a lot more.
>>
>>61596387
>>
>>61596361
force https in everything and use a DNS that doesn't get served from Crapcast

Block http://servicealerts.comcast.net on the router level through parental controls.
>>
>>61596526
HTTPS everywhere can only enable a secure connection if that site already supports HTTPS.

E.g. 4chan supports HTTPS, but doesn't reroute you to it from plain HTTP connections unless you enable that setting, or you have HTTPS everywhere.

>>

Do you not understand how computers work?
>>
If the anons here are right and it it's coming from the ISPs DNS, you could probably work around it by forcing your network to use a different DNS server.
>>
Huh? I torrent huge shit all the time and I've never once gotten that message.
>>
>>61596647
Why do you fucking expect when using a non-secure communication method? Use https or even your neighbor can sometimes do the same shit.
>>
>>61596446
How do you not? I regularly hit 150GB a day
>>
>>61596466
Pretty sure with comcast it's done via the RDK firmware on their modems. Thats how their captive portal operates when you first login.
>>
>>61599828
How the fuck are you regularly downloading 150GB a day?
>>
Just get comcast's Gigabit pro service.

2.2gbps down and up with an SFP+ drop to your house, static IP address and no data cap.
>>
>>61599864
150 Total, I run my own server. And I live in a country where unlimited gigabit is only USD$100
>>
>American internet
HAHAHAHA
>>
this is why I am still on DSL. Verizon doesn't give a shit what I do on my connection.
>>
>>61599981
Verizon doesn't give a fuck about their faster speed tiers either.

I've used over 2tb in the last month on my 1gbps $70/month with Verizon FiOS.

USE LEVEL 3
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2

this. It's very easy, just stick that shit in your router and give comcast the finger.
>>
>>61596579
So change it you retard, takes like 10 seconds
>>
Im still in a uncapped area lm doanloading like a mad man before the caps hit.
>>
>>61600302

why 4.2.2.2 and not openDNS?
>>
>>61600445
Opendns logs everything you do and sells it,they got caught years ago doing exactly this). They also like to play games with dns and new tld.
>>

and why 4.2.2.2 ? I've never heard of level 3, but I haven't really kept up with dns stuff

What if your ISP already uses level 3 for their primary DNS?
>>
>>61600566
You have an intelligent isp and should hold on to them during the comming war

You should still set it manually incase your isp changes its mind and pushes it on a dhcp renew
>>
>>61600586

definitely no harm in setting it for yourself to be sure
>>

do it to your computer and don't fuck up your router.
>>
>>61600302
I just stuck level 3 dns into my router and my speed dropped from ~190mbps to 70mbps. I tried their 209.244.0.3/4 servers as well and got 10mbps
>>
>>61600691
Thats not how any of this works.
It only serves dns,it has no relation to how fast your line it
>>
I was hitting 4-6tb a month. Finally settled for the unlimited plan in June. Since then, I've only hit 400GB, FORT 2 MONTHS. Pretty sure they're full of shit and are heavily exaggerating.
>>
>>61596361
Packet injection, which is illegal so you should probably sue them or use https like someone who is not tech Illiterate
>>
>>61600697
I'm aware of that, im wondering if I am getting throttled by my isp for not using their dns, or something less intentional along those lines

it does sound crazy, but I just removed my static dns from my router and restarted it and my speed is back up to ~200mbps. Maybe there's a bug in my router or something... I really need to get DD WRT, but it took so long to get my fucking network drive working with linksys standard shit.

Seems weird to rely on the os to keep track of how much you've downloaded.

>>61600820
>>61600748
>>61600697
>>61600691

Turns out its a bug in the wrt1900acs that fucks your internet speed in a bad way if you don't powercycle your router after changing the static dns. It does a soft reboot for you, but I guess it doesn't work.
>>
This wouldn't be happening if you lived in a socialist regime
>>
>>61601072
why? Unless you're downloading heavily elsewhere it should be the majority of your data use.
>>
>>61601072
As opposed to what?

If some stuff is through the browser, and some is through a torrent client, and some is through a music streaming app, then the common layer underneath all those is the OS.
>>
>>61601123
>>61601160

I guess it would be fine if you didn't have access to the router. However, it only counts the data coming to one computer and the means by which it does so are obscured by the OS. The comment that that photo is replying to is with regards to a data cap across his network, meaning if he was streaming netflix to his tv, downloading updates to a mobile device, games to a console, etc, there would be a very large discrepancy that could easily be resolved by just looking at what the router says
>>
>>61601191
Not all routers keep track of bandwidth, or if they do they might not display it in a user friendly manner, or like my router, it simply reports total bytes sent and received since it was last rebooted. Useless for actually trying to monitor over a billing cycle unless I want to keep track myself or reset it every month manually.
>>
>>61596361
Change your DNS
Problem solved
>>
>>61601764
Plugging it into a different computer seems like an easier solution.
