I have no idea about technology/programming but shitposting here and there and I installed Xubuntu two years ago. It just works, I learned a lot just by googling. If google doesn't work just shitpost about the problem and praise windows and say linux sucks, /g/ fixes it in no time.

Regardless of your choice be prepared to distro hop for a foreseeable future until you get bored and settle on Debian or Arch.

Gather up the names of a few distros that interest you. Visit their respective forums/wikis. Decide on your distro of choice based upon how helpful you find their user help.

Depends entirely on you. How much free time do you have? How much are you willing to spent in order to learn about linux/computers? Do you like to fiddle with things or should it just werk? Can you use duckduckgo (or google) to seek help?

First of all, Distros don't really matter as much as you might think. Just pick one and stick with it. You can probably do anything you want on any distro you choose.

If you like to fiddle with things and are willing to learn then Arch and Gentoo are good but they will require you to invest a bit or a lot of time (especially Gentoo, arch will be way easier). Their greatest advantage is having minimal bloat and letting you do everything the way you want. If you follow their wiki's guides on how to install them it shouldn't be too difficult. Get Parabola if you care about FOSS.

If you don't care about that then you're free to install Ubuntu, Debian or Fedora.

This.

Why is it still a question? The right answer is Ubuntu or one of it's spins (Xubuntu, Mate, etc).

Ubuntu will give you less problems (it will still be a pain sometimes) than any other distro. Also, every problem that you will encounter - probably will have a solution on ask ubuntu or somewhere else.

Learn Linux's file system, learn some useful commands in Bash, learn what packages do what. Then, If you would like some adventures - try another distro and learn that they all distros are almost the same thing. The differences are package manager and a set of base packages.

Fuck off.
Using arch does not make you better at using Linux nor does it require any more intelligence.
There's a reason there's so much user documentation on arch, it's because faggots like you feel the need to be superior by doing it the harder way instead of actually being resourceful in the way you use your os.
OP, use Ubuntu or fedora, it's way better for beginning and doesn't make you want to kill yourself because X broke for the fiftieth time.

Ubuntu is absolutely not a walled garden, so you could theoretically stay there forever. However, I think many people might switch from Ubuntu simply because they want to build up from scratch rather than look through Ubuntu's documentation and sheer off bloat.
>>
>>61595412
Mint or Ubuntu
>>
>>61598113
Nah, ubuntus perfect.
I distro hopped quite a lot and in the end stuck with it, because it can do anything from casual surfing to hardcore server and virtualization use.
I really wish I didn't waste as much time installing distros over and over again and just stuck with what I had now.
>>
>>61598113
not really, unless you want a lightweight distro with minimal bloat

but then you could get mini netinst Ubuntu iso and install just the packages you need

>>
>>61598071
Arch does require more intelligence. It's unnecessarily complex, but it DOES require more intelligence.

The point of Arch really is to teach a normie how a fully functioning gnulinux system works, how it communicates with itself and how it communicates with the user. It's good for people who want to program for Linux because to program for Linux, it's important to know how your program speaks to Linux.

The reason there's so much Arch documentation is because they intend it to not only serve as documentation for Arch but documentation so useful you could use it as general Linux information even if Arch-specific instructions weren't applicable to you.

On the topic of X breaking, I actually use Ubuntu after years of being autistic simply because X is configured worth a fuck on Ubuntu and I don't have to baby it.

I would NOT recommend Arch to any beginner, even if it's not necessarily hard to install (nor does it "teach you how Linux works" by copy-pasting lines from the wiki without any idea or explanation of what they do.)

Ubuntu is a fine choice, and probably the safest option. Mint is utter trash, stay away.

Antergos is essentially Arch with an installer. It's much more noob-friendly for that reason obviously but still a little bare compared to Ubuntu, and comparable to Debian or Fedora in that regard. Manjaro might be alright, but I've never tried it.

WTF, you're both idoits.

Arch is 10x easier to use and install than Gentoo or any BSD and you'd know this if you've used them.

You don't because Arch is the hardest you have used so far and its been the biggest leap in difficulty for you so you assume its the hardest one. Arch is an intermediate distro, really easy to set up if you know basic UNIX. I mean, sound and ethernet work by default in Arch and even on propriety drivers i have never needed to configure KMS like on actually obtuse OSes.

OP doesn't need Arch and should learn to use Ubuntu first.

> Zorin OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution designed especially for newcomers to Linux. It has a Windows-like graphical user interface and many programs similar to those found in Windows. Zorin OS also comes with an application that lets users run many Windows programs. The distribution's ultimate goal is to provide a Linux alternative to Windows and let Windows users enjoy all the features of Linux without complications.

Arch breaking is a complete meme. In theory is something that could happen at any given time because of its sheer nature of a bleeding edge distribution, in practice it actually never happens. It's for the most part a meme spread by Debianfags who can't handle other people running software less than a million years old on their computers.
It isn't even any hard to use after you got your environment set up, and even that basically amounts to just setting up x.org and networkmanager.
With that said, I can understand that it might seem daunting for a novice, and for that reason I wouldn't advice it as your first distro.
>>
>>61595412
Just use Ubuntu at first you can customize it, do whatever you could even get Ubuntu minimal and then do the rest yourself.

If later on you feel like it switch to something more "advanced" try something like Arch with it's Pacman package manager or something non-systemd like Gentoo or Void.

Arch is not that great for learning. Once you installed the base system - it becomes almost Ubuntu experience (only 2x times more annoying).
Wanna learn Linux? Install Slackware. It has a very nice description for every package that comes with it and also it makes you install all your dependencies by yourself - therefore, you always know what package does what.
But if you wanna a normie Linux with bleeding edge packages - Arch is still the best.
