SSD's use less power, stay cooler, are more durable, and last longer than their mechanical counterparts. Their price per gb is substantially higher which makes sense because it is the newer better tech, but it is gradually falling.

>>
>>61592576
they are slow, unreliable, and cost 10x more.

the failure rate is through the rough, though the ssd industry is paying big bucks to keep it hidden

There is a limited number of writes that each drive can perform, after that you are shit out of luck.

when an ssd fails, there is no chance to recover your files, unlike how with an hdd you can get your files back by replacing the heads or the control board.

If you want your OS/games/anime to load faster then get one. If you also want to save a little space in your case that's a reason as well. Theoretically you could stack multiple (more than 2) of them on top of each other in the same 3.5slot.

Um no sweaty
A HDD spins very fast. This allows it to read and write very quickly while causing it to wear out very quickly.
An SSD on the other hand is static so the information has to drain into it via gravity. Much slower, but puts less strain on it. Also why it's cheaper, no moving parts.

SSDs are the future. Their cost per gb is dropping every year, and their capacity is quickly outdoing HDDs as a 10TB SSD is already in existence. They also have significantly higher read/write speeds, consume less power, are less prone to being damaged because they have no moving parts, and are also dead silent because of no moving parts.

They are most definitely not a meme and you can expect them, along with other solid state memory solutions, to begin replacing HDDs in the next 10 years or less.

Bitmicro made ide SSDs back in the 2000's. They were prohibitively expensive though.

It... it's not a meme, OP.
>>
>>61593591
They're better than hdds if you're going do be shaking your computer though.

we already have 3D Memory, when are we going to have 3D hard drives?

>Oh boy I sure love waiting for my second HDD to spin up whenever I try and access it. Who the fuck wants instant access anyway?
Slow your roll bro, it's only a couple seconds.
Chill, relax.
>>
If you don't have an SSD, it's easily the most profoundly noticeable upgrade you can possibly make to a computer

We've had 3D hard drives ever since they started stacking the platters.

Me and probably a lot of other people are waiting for 1TB SSHD to come down to $200.

We already do.

>it's not even the nand, it just won't power on
>lost 7 episodes worth of chinese cartoons encodes
>lost my avisynth scripts

>have to start over
fuckning sandisk REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

thankfully it's easy to start over. just wasted electricity

If it's not the NAND, you can probably fix it with a soldering iron and a new capacitor somewhere.

but it's under warranty.
gonna rma this shit.

I don't think the word means what you think it means.

They're slowly turning to DRAM-less TLC shitshows. And QLC is right around the corner. So prepare your anus for a whole new dawn of crappy write speeds and drives that can't be overwritten 10 times without dying.

Only SCM like 3D Xpoint, MRAM etc can save us from this looming nightmare.

>it only affects boot time

And you know...load times for pretty much every application and game out there.
>>
>>61593749

RAPID is literal snake oil, half of the time it does nothing and the other half it actually slows the drive down. The only time it actually helps is when you're doing large sequential writes, which is basically never.
The numbers you get in Magician benchmark with RAPID on are completely meaningless as far as the SSD is concerned, you're basically just measuring your RAM.

memeing aside, is sandisk really reliable SSD? Aren't they too cheap?
