I wish they still made computer cases like this.
>>
>>61594146
>>61593311

Theoretically with 3D printing or even some basic tools you could create one of these in a couple hours yourself.

Most cases new and old are just one metal box and a plastic front face. The rest can be painted fitting the shade of the front too.
>>
>>61594236
k, make me one, how much?
>>
>>61594236

Isn't the quality of 3D printers still pretty bad? I'm thinking of the blocky pattern that forms on the surface of the printed object.
>>
>>61595165
look into sla 3d printers (you can make one with a projector if you're poor)
they have a much higher resolution.
>>
>>61593311
Just find one with a front panel you like and paint the case beige. That's what I'll likely do whenever I finally build another computer, along with finding a case that works well in a horizontal position.

>>61594236
How much does a decent 3D printer cost now days anyway? They seem neat but my biggest worry with getting one is that I wouldn't have enough projects to justify it.

>>61595165
>I'm thinking of the blocky pattern that forms on the surface of the printed object.
Then fucking sand it smooth. Just because you have a 3D printer doesn't excuse not doing any finishing or involving any other fabrication methods (particularly annoying with the people who make the 3D printed guns directly out of plastic).

Obsolete commercial operating systems are fuckin' full to the brim with not-so-obsolete IP licensed from other parties, it's just not worth the time, money and potential legal hell to GPL a dead operating system for a dead hardware platform nobody gives a shit about, especially when it isn't going to do much for it anyway just like the GPL did fuck all for CDE.

Something like Apple's System 6 shouldn't have that many copyrights attached, does it?
>>
>>61600862
Probably not nearly as much, but it's possible. In that case it's probably more just a matter of a lot of effort with not a whole lot of interest. System 6 doesn't have that much potential as a basis for new projects, there's nothing hobbyists really need the source for, the newest piece of kit it'll run on is nearly thirty years old, the list goes on.

From my limited lurking around, it doesn't look like most of the limitations facing hobbyist developers today with these operating systems would change that much with the source code available. Maybe it could improve emulation or homebrew hardware development or something, though.
>>

I know Linux doesn't have drivers for the Macintosh floppy drives, so it would make Linux more useful if you wanted it on one of those machines.

>you can make one with a projector if you're poor
Commercial assembled DLP printers are getting pretty cheap these days. Anyone have any experience with the one mentioned in Pic related?
>>
>>61601010
That's something that definitely plagues a lot of those platforms, SGI systems are great examples too. Source would definitely help, straight up hardware documentation would be even better, there's no question about that. Still, at least the NetBSD port seems usable enough, it's just very lacking as a desktop.
>>
>>61593311
I like my stuff, but the past belongs in the past. Any new attempt at a beige box would just feel like a trashy reproduction to me and it wouldn't really feel at all the same. It's the entire context of the system that makes it novel and interesting, not just the color of the plastic.

Membrane keyboard is mechanical, touch (for example) is not. Just because you've swallowed the marketing term doesn't make mechanically working system non-mechanical.
But if membrane (buckling spring or not) keyboard is not mechanical, neither is keyboard with microswitches. TAC-2 is just as mechanical stick as is Competition Pro.

You don't see nothing wrong with this statement?
You didn't call keyboards with microswitches mechanical 15 years ago, only after marketing department sold you the term. That is a cold fact and you're too pussy to admit it (if you were even a thing 15 years ago, that is).

Neither did anyone call 64-bit extension of x86 x86_64 when AMD first released it, but only after Intel pursued heavy marketing for it. And some (not gentoo, thank God) swallowed, like whores they are.
>>
>>61609350
Nope (not even reference to keyboards). The term started appearing on bbs's and boards after certain Taiwanese company released a microswitch keyboard, using 'mechanical' as a marketing term.

Oh boy, I sure as Hell don't have old notebooks here from '87 where I already don't refer to my IIc keyboard as "mechanical". Wait...I do.

Deliver the logs (and proof of their authencity and date) and the statement becomes bullshit. Early 90's, third world sandnigger university groups, not a single mention of 'mechanical keyboards'. Same goes for non-local newsgroups and quite a few channels on efnet from 1995 to 2005 (and from around 1998 on quakenet).

Or maybe find the earliest mention of 'mechanical keyboard' from replies currently online on any board? I sure as hell can't find a single entry before 2005.

>I personally call them like they are, rubber dome, scissor, buckling spring, microswitched, etc
And that is the very correct thing to do and why woudn't you want to encourage use of such specific (and techically correct) terms instead of marketing terms?

"mechanical" in reference to keyboards is not even one of them though
you may think that because it's mostly used in marketing, but it's not, calling them like they actually are is still the most correct way to do it

Never seen it in /retro/

>why woudn't you want to encourage use of such specific (and techically correct) terms instead of marketing terms?
I responded to your post that already used the term, I just corrected you to at least use it correctly if you're not savvy enough to know how else to call it

Anyways, calling them mechanical is an old old thing, I'm guilty of it in my youth, c.a. 20 years ago
>>
>>61610465
But honestly, if it concerns you, did you heard your computer brethen calling keyboards with microswitches mechanical 15 years (or more) ago? It is not impossible of course, because I've heard it used in (late 80's, early 90's) reference to old typing machines compared to their semiconductor counterparts (this of course gets tricky when those typing machines could been using microswitches).
And no, I don't except honesty on /g/.

You don't even need that. Just get get uMatrix, and only have the elements of the scripts and other elements of the page that you actually need white listed. Additionally install Palemoon and don't use an adblocker (as any ads are taken care of by simply not white listing them in uMatrix, and not using the redundant adblocker can shave a second or more off load times on weaker machines). That was enough to get my old netbook with an 1.6 GHz N270 Atom to load most pages in 4-8 seconds depending on the site, or about twice that I set the processor to throttle to 800 MHz which makes that anon's 15 second load time claims on any i5 particularly amusing.

Holy shit. On a side note, how far back does one have to go with desktop processors to get something comparable to the N270 Atoms that were used in old netbooks, as I remember hearing they were much weaker than a similarly clocked desktop processor? A Pentium III maybe?

Atom chips have performance similar to Pentium-M based Celerons, but at much lower TDP. They're weaker IPC-wise than a desktop Pentium III, so a 1GHz PIII will beat something like a 1.6GHz N270.
