I'm on the same boat OP. I've been reading on Gentoo and it just seems perfect. It seems a lot like a learning endeavor tho, or one for a pc that you already have set a goal for (I. e. that pc is for programming, that one is for, serving etc)

When you compile GRUB you get 10min of somewhat satisfying hacker-screen. Anyway yes, it is a relative waste of time and CPU cycles.
