I like it.

Elementary uses Pantheon desktop which is OK looking desktop.

I feel like KDE Plasma and Elementary Pantheon are the only desktops that are trying to bring Linus desktop into 21st century and trying to make the Linux desktop experience to attract normie masses.

And I think this is a good thing as it's going to bring more users and developers to FOSS desktop.

Desktop environment, it was made for elementary OS, it's part of the same project (along with a number of other basic apps, though those are mostly forked from GNOME ones. A big part of their goal is integration among their default apps).

The Real Meme OS.
Desktop Enviroment is still buggy (even after all this time) and the latest Ubuntu LTS (which is what Elementary really is) is also not that great. Also, the devs are fucking annoying with their DONATE thinghy.

The OS itself is very restricted. Almost like a mobile OS. Thank God they still let you use a file manager and even a terminal emulator.

On a plus side - they have a media player that can make thumbnails on a timeline. That's cool. And a window manager itself is not bad.

Maybe I would consider setting it up for my grandmother if she was still alive and Pantheon wasn't so buggy.

Pretty much. The differences come down to package manager and desktop. And with Flatpak and Snappy on the way, those differences will continue to pare down. The Linux community needs to unify on one or two distros and defragment. More distros is actively hurting things.

The fact that Elementary's devs haven't immediately switched over to contributing to Ubuntu is a shame. The fact that Solus has its own package manager and has forked GNOME to do something that a GNOME addon already does...it's all so stupid.

When these projects lose steam and die, the lesson will be learned.

They already are, pretty much.
They are even taking business from RHEL...
I know lots of college students who are working on servers and learning about servers who use ubuntu server it's insane!
It's because it's the best actually free to use distro in the server environment.
I also asked lots of them why they wouldn't just use Debian and it's mostly because of support. Ubuntu gives amazing support and the community gives amazing support for FREE and RHEL is still being a money whore and no one uses Debian. lol
Ubuntu is kinda like the best things about RHEL and Ubuntu for server users. It's pretty stable and has support that rivals paid support.

It's not that ubuntu is doing anything right to get this monopoly, it's that the makers of redhat and debian are fucking down syndrome level.

Uh, if you aren't a complete vegetable, you can figure out how to pass-through your gpu in one of the many great VM's in linux and play through that. The desktop is already better. If it wasn't for games, no linux users would touch Windows.

The biggest problem being that OpenGL fucking sucks.

Its alright, i like how it looks aesthetically and use it occasionally for internetting and such but Mint is a lot easier to use for work and anything that requires command line stuff.

I don't like anything that tries to imitate another UI. It's clearly trying to be like OSX...Then why not just fucking use OSX? I've never understood people customizing linux to look like windows or OSX isn't that why you use linux?

It has the potential to be something pretty nice.

As it is now, it just feels like a cheap, feature-starved, Chinese knockoff of OSX, It's alright if you need a retard-proof workstation but otherwise it's worthless.

Making a not very stable fork of Gnome and using Ubuntu as a base won't move Linux communityvany further. Even another meme distro like Solus is more exciting. At least it really is bringing something new.
That's said - I am surprised of how long Elementary is floating around top of Distro Watch list. It appears that there is really is a place for a barely working OSX knockoff.
