are there any non-meme ways of preventing carpel tunnel that actually work, or is it just part of the job and you should expect to get it eventually in your life?
>>
>>61561512
depends, if your going to dismiss things that would actually help you as 'memes' i doubt you'll find anything. I use a trackball, i have coworkers using ergonomic mice and keyboards, etc. I'm afraid ergonomic things in general are going to be 'meme'-ish in that they're not standard form-factor and being outside the norm come with a certain level of pretention or assumption of real need. If your health is a real issue to you, you should just seek out any possible means of assistance and not worry about what it's internet status is.
>>
I'm 23 and I already have it. Am I screwed or can surgery fix it?
>>
>>61561512
>non-meme ways of preventing carpel tunnel that actually work
yeah push ups
>>
>>61561603
from what I understand there are two different surgeries. one where they break your wrist and let it heal, and one where they drill into your tendons or something
>>
>>61561603
you need surgery and assistance. lay off the wanking/guitar/keyboard or develop proper warm-up habits.

>>61561619
also yeah, getting some exercise is proven to keep you from being a petite weakling who needs wrist braces
>>
Just take breaks!
>>
>>61561576
so, yes or no?
>>
>>61561619
I do a shit ton of push-ups, I work out a ton and I'm in great shape. Yet I got it as early as 23. Fuck my life I guess.

>>61561624
But do they help long-term or am I screwed if I got it at such a young age?
>>
>>61561512
As a graphic designer and gamer I've been in my computer for 10-16 hrs a day for the past 8 years. Ive never had issues. I use gaming peripherals and a flat 2 sided aluminum mouse pad and no special wrist rest on my keyboard aside from the stock plastic one it comes with.
>>
>>61561512
what does carpel tunnel feel like?
>>
>>61561512
Don't use a shitty mouse with 1990's technology.
>>
>>61561512
exercising

weak nu-male
>>
>>61561512
Working out. Get stronk.
>>
>>61561644
if you're looking for ergonomic versions of things you'll have to get past the notion of 'this is a meme' for the sake of your health. otherwise some other people make the very good point that you could just attempt some minimal daily exercise and be fine. (push ups + hand stretches)
>>
>>61561669
Pain and limited mobility

Can you get carpal tunnel from resting on your wrist while you type/maneuver the mouse or is that a meme?
>>
>>61561657
but are you flexible
stretch your fucking arms out everyday do wrist stretchings/exercises
>>
>>61561669
Insane pain inside the wrist/arm and numbness of the hand. Literally drains all my will to code once the pain starts to get really bad.
>>
1) Experiment with different keyboards, find what works best, leaves you least sore.
2) Stop ever hour or 3 to stretch your hands, and your body as well, get the fuck up.
3) On worse days limit typing. If necessary type like an 80 year old with your pointing fingers if need be. Let the inflamation subside.

But yeah, it's an occupational hazard. Deal with it.

lol, 26 here and been a keyboard klacker since I can remember.

all of your wrist need to git gud.

Different people, different bodies. Chill.

Some people run their whole lives and are fine, some run a few years and their knees start failing. It happens.
>>
What's everyone's words per minute speed?
8 character average no cheating
My max is about 75 and I can comfortably do 60
>>
>>61561693
I've been to a physiotherapist on multiple occasions and I'm doing all the fucking exercises. My carpal tunnel hand is so fucking flexible by now it's insane. I've also tried trackball, a vertical mouse and use a wrist support during the nights etc. Fucking sucks.
>>
>>61561644
Talk to a specialist if you're really that concerned
>>
>>61561695
>>61561688
Is this something that you can notice early on to prevent further damage? or is it you break it once and rip?
>>
>>61561733
I think I average 60 as well, but my coworkers always say I type fast as fuck because:

a) my keyboard is kinda noisy
b) I'm a vim elder sage

I find that 60 and a good grasp of vim grammar makes me fast enough to not feel like I'm wasting time. I think faster than I type, but the time I need to type out shit I thought out usually is enough to come up with another angle.

>carpal tunnel meme
Did a doctor tell you you have carpal tunnel? Because if not, it is statistically more likely to be tendonitis/tendonosis, for which surgery isn't very effective. Prepare your anus^W^W for "lifestyle change", which involves improving your posture, sleep (crucial), workplace ergonomics (get a good chair and install Workrave), and diet as well as exercise, but not all kinds of exercise.
>>61561630
>you need surgery
Pretty irresponsible to say that.
>>
>>61561512
I'm 30, using computers heavily since 14 and so far have avoided it and have zero issues with my fingers / wrists. I don't use any form of ergonomic keyboard / mouse / wrist rests.

I attribute it to exercise. I've always done sports that use the hands a lot, parkour, basketball and currently bouldering. I do wonder how long this will last though as I know it can creep up on you quickly.

On a side note, planning to abandon computers altogether soon-ish.

Gore. My manager just walked by and gave me a promotion
>>
>>61561814
I've only been to her a few times but she said she suspects carpal tunnel and is telling me to do all the carpal tunnel exercises. I've always been a normie with a healthy lifestyle so there is not much to change. She hasn't mentioned surgery yet (I guess they are not suggesting it very lightly). I have a shit ton of other conditions and severe migraine, so I can handle pain but fuck it has been getting worse and worse. My previous arm injury already fucked up my nerves and I have a shit ton of metal in my hand, but I'm not sure if it is at all related.

My grandma also had carpal tunnel and had a surgery a while ago. Was talking to her earlier this week and all the symptoms match carpal tunnel.
>>
A large mouse pad, having low sens and only moving the mouse with your lower arm instead of rotating your hand helps with your mouse hand. The only time you still have to use the tendons in your hand then is when you use the mouse wheel.
>>
>>61561883
In an effort to remove ego, I will abandon what has defined me

Either you have a weird job or you don't know what a promotion is
>>
Wait here's the real question
Can you get carpal tunnel from jacking it too much?
>>
>>61561512
start by avoiding the claw hand position
>>
>>61562058
Not really, unless you keep your wrist at a weird, slightly forced angle while jacking it.

It does sound like you are far more likely to have carpal tunnel than your average wristposter on /g/, but you may still want to get a second opinion from a doctor who specializes in RSI/carpal tunnel. I'd also be surprised if a supposed normie had a really good posture and keyboarding technique just by default. You should review that shit carefully.
>>
I started having some problems so I 1) switched to Dvorak keyboard layout 2) switched to a trackpad instead of a mouse 3) started using a wireless keyboard positioned better than my laptops keyboard.

I haven't had any problems since. I think the trackpad and the better posture due to the keyboard position were the biggest helps.
>>
>>61562009
Good luck with your mid-life crisis, anon. Just remember that computers will be there when you decide to come back.

>are there any non-meme ways of preventing carpel tunnel that actually work

don't use mouse
>>
>>61562097
I'm kind of broke but I'm slowly buying new shit to relieve the pain. For instance, just got a new chair for better posture and I'm ordering a 60% keyboard next week so I can minimize the trackball -> keyboard arm movement.

If I eventually get a surgery, will all the knowledge, good posture and nice equipment help me avoid future wrist pain? Right now the pain is insane but I'm well insured so surgery would not cost anything at all (of course I'm doing all I can to avoid it).
>>
>>61562161
Frankly, this. Keyboards and gamepads are nothing for my wrists when compared to the dreadful mouse.
>>
>>61562141
>implying I believed you
Same :)

>If I eventually get a surgery, will all the knowledge, good posture and nice equipment help me avoid future wrist pain?
I don't know, but good posture, using the right keyboard (no laptops) and occasionally wearing wrist braces make a world of a difference when you have "simple" RSI. Here, this may help you: https://a.uguu.se/s7vKAjzDAgB2_rsibook.pdf.
>>
>>61561512
I've been a spending the majority of my waking hours on my computer for as long as I can remember and I have zero wrist problems in my 20's.
>>
>>61562315
I'm already using wrist braces (have a different ones for day & night) and they do help a bit. I'll also book a new doctor's appointment shortly, as I feel like the current doctor is underestimating the pain and her solution is mostly to "stop using the computer". I don't think she really understands how much I need the computer for both education and work.

Also, thanks a ton for the help, really appreciate it. Will definitely bookmark the PDF.
>>
>>61562097
How is it possible to keep your hands straight like that? I have a wide chest/shoulders and its impossible to use the position second to top right.

Guess it was designed for low test manlets and women?
