If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

almost all processors these days have a turbo boost. It will pick the single best performing core and temporarily boost that core's processing speed.
Even locked, non-overclockable processors do it. My laptop has a Core i5 7300HQ. The base clock is 2.5 Ghz, but it turbo boosts to 3.5 Ghz.

overpriced crap at the moment.
It's only compatible with Intel SSDs at the moment and those are nowhere near best in class.

so i just got my r7 non x, o.c. to 3.8 gh this weekend on the stock wraith spire on 1.347 volts i think it was. something in that range. still got plenty of room to hit 4.0 as i can max it to 1.425 volts but im more than happy at 3.8. i just wanted to hit 3.5 at a good voltage and i would have been super happy but 3.8 on stock is super great and such a great deal.

Yesterday I received a brand new 1050 Ti and I managed to mount it today after cleaning the case since it has been a while since last time.
Looks good so far, except that there's no VGA port and I cannot use my dual screen setup till I get a DP>VGA or DVI>VGA adapter so I'm stuck on the secondary screen that uses HDMI.
The temp is pretty good too by the way, the cooler is from Gigabyte, this is the mini version, I played CB2 on max settings for half a hour at 800p (small size screen) and the temp was steady around 56° with very silent fan at less than 50% speed.
Now I'm waiting for FFXIV to get delivered since I bought the physical release, I'll report back how it does with that once I install and test it, I hope it does well (it should).
>>
>>61554049
It can't be the PSU. I used it with a 750W PSU and it didn't work, same as with a 300W. Maybe the SATA power connectors don't put out enough power for more than 2 HDDs.

>>
>>61554163
it's the current year, my main screen is actually a 50" TV from 2010 with an HTPC that although it connects to the TV using DP, it has no HDMI nor DP out port, only VGA. I already tried connecting the DP cable directly to the GPU but it didn't work, it must be a custom version, it works only with the HTPC, so I'm using it as "proxy" between the TV and the GPU, once I get the VGA adapter.

>>
>>61553892
It's ideal for building a computer for someone computer illiterate, who needs lots of space (HDD), and you don't trust to manage multiple volumes (ie, no separate SSD for boot).
i3 or above, however.
>>
>>61554531
maybe your firewall is blocking windows from pinging MS? otherwise call their support line, if your key is legit I mean.
>>
>>61554507
Yea I guess but I can always pump some additional effects into it like SSAA.
Also I see right now a new gtx 970 for 180€ while a new 1050ti is just marginally cheaper.

heres the exact build for reference, graphics card is a gtx 9600 till i can upgrade, also about that mobo, if your planning on building with it set the timings and qvl specs right off the bat before even installing windows, i didnt assuming they would default which gave me problems, but after setting ram speeds and frequency it runs like butter not a single crash

Key selling site, so probably some OEM key. When I had the same problem with the first key, they sent me a second

And I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work better then, but for some reason I couldnt connect to my internet then, even through the command prompt
>>
>>61554589
Do you mean to replace the TV? I don't think I can find any 50" screen for $45. I use it when I'm playing or watching anime, while the small secondary screen for other stuff like shitposting, checking stats, reading and whatever I cannot do on the main when it's busy.

M.2 NVMe or ssd? Which one is faster?
and which one has longer lifetime and warranty?
>>
>>61554726
gross. If you decide you want a 1050ti, instead look for a used gtx 960, same performance. You should be able to find one for megadirtcheap... if Radeon owners who sold to miners didn't snatch them all up.
But yeah, I saw a used 960 in my area for $80USD. Used 960 would allow more budget for cpu upgrade. I think you need that more really.
>>
>>61554628
I've only used Prime95 and and memtest for a couple hours each, but it's been stable playing games for hours as well so I figured it was solid. Don't you have to pay for aida?
>>
>>61554800
NVME is another type of SSD.
What you refer to "SSD" is a SATA SSD
NVME was designed to eventually replace SATA/AHCI, which was designed with hard drives, not SSDs in mind. This severely limits their performance.

If you are reading or writing very large files often or in small timeframes, NVME is worth the investment. If you just want Windows and programs like games to load quickly, the difference is trivial.

NVME flash is the same flash you find in SATA drives. It doesn't have a longer warranty.
>>
>>61554796
Read the OP, what are you using your PC for?
>>
>>61554800
m. 2 nvme IS an ssd. What the fuck are you talking about? Did you mean vs Sata? Nvme is much faster, but a sata drive is a lot cheaper, and the difference for most users is imperceptible. Durability / Lifetime I have no idea about.
>>
>>61554877

>>
Is it worth upgrading from a 2GB HD7850 to a 3GB R9 280X? I've found one on Ebay for £100 but 2GB VRAM is starting to feel really cramped so I feel like I should go for at least 4GB if I buy a new card.
>>
>>61554925

>>
Wanting to speed up my few years old Toshiba laptop with an ssd and new ram. I know the ram is a simple swap.
Is the ssd as simple as cloning the drive and popping the new one in?
I've seen videos of other ssd replacements, but none for my specific model.
>>
>>61554942
What is your budget? For a 150$ you can get GTX 1050ti
>>
>>61554959
Assuming the SSD is SATA, yes.
Make sure to tune the OS to the SSD once finished.
>>
>>61554858
that sounds like a lottery winning chip to me anon, ill definitely try and lower my voltages this weekend, cooler temps would be nice, and nah you just use the free trial, download it and it will be a (from what i can see) fully functioning 30 day demo, it seems to be another winrar, extended demo type thing but ill be uninstalling it after 30 days
>>
>>61554964
Isn't the 280X a hell of a lot more faster than the 1050Ti? Only problem is 3GB VRAM vs 4. My budget is anywhere below £200 but as low as possible is preferred. I've found a 4GB R9 380 at £179 and 970's at £200 as well.

>>
>>61555005
>that sounds like a lottery winning chip to me anon
I figured I had won once I got it to 4.0ghz around 1.35 on the voltage. Ran too hot for the stock cooler, but nice to know it can. I'll definitely grab aida and make sure it's stable though.
>>
>>61555091
It may happen automatically in Windows now. Pretty sure it's mostly the swap file shrinking.
>>
>>61555133
Cool, thanks. I've only got around 270 gbs on the current hdd and plan to get the 500GB ssd from Adata so I'm not too worried about having space.
>>
>>61555155
The issue isn't space, it's writes to the SSD shortening lifespan. Continually getting dinged in virtual memory theoretically takes a toll.
>>
>>61555205
After a quick google search, apparently it's just a matter of checking an optimize for ssd box in disk management, but the os should recognize it as an ssd automatically.

>>
>>61555349
>but the os should recognize it as an ssd automatically.
Yes, that's what I figured. I was just worried if perhaps directly cloning from a HDD, rather than installing, might bypass a check in Windows for what the storage medium was.

How does the future looks for the AM4 platform? Will amd ditch it in one year likes intel does?

I'm on a 2500k and I can't stand any more the stutters and sub 45 frame drops in a lot of games. I was thinking about upgrading but since I'm a poor fag I can only afford a 1600 at best with 16gb of fast ram and a decent mobo with lots of future expansion in mind.

But if in a few years I wanna give my computer a extra boost will I be stuck with the 1800x?
>>
>>61555409

Alright guys i need advice.
I recently resat my CPU cooler and now I am paranoid about leaving fine lint on the cooler surface during the process of replacing the thermal paste. I used an alcohol swab to wipe it down and then let it dry before mounting it. Me being a dumbfuck forgot to check for lint on the surfaces.
My CPU temperatures are fine but I am paranoid. Should I remount my CPU cooler again? Or am I just being paranoid?
>>
>>61555424
Seriously? Sounds to good to be true. So when amd releases a 6-8 core with better IPC and higher clocks will I be able to just upgrade the bios and buy it?
>>
Is a 550W fine for a 1080ti/Ryzen 5 1700 build? Or should I be safe and go for 650W?

Also, does anyone know about SP SSDs? The shop I frequent just got some in for a decent price and I'm considering one as my boot drive
http://m.umart.com.au/goods.php?id=39211
>>
>>61555493
Go for a 650w and make sure it's gold/Platinum certified and from a known company and NEVER BUY A CHEAP PSU
>>
>>61555492
It's up to the vendor to provide that support in UEFI.

>>
If my MOBO has an 8-pin connector for CPU power, and my PSU has a 4+4 cable, can I glue the two halves together to make it easier to install?
>>
OK, my PC has finally been bought after various troubles with sellers and banks and should be here tomorrow.

I've bought an i7 7700 and I've heard that Win7 doesn't run properly on it?
Or that you can't install updates?
I've got a win7 install disc, should I try to make a full win7 install USB?
Or do I HAVE TO use windows 10?
>>
>>61555620
Install from your disk, there are guides to updates. You may need a PS/2 mouse/keyboard because you won't have USB drivers before updating 7.

After 6 years my trusty 570GTX broke.
I'm not looking to spend huge amounts of money. The 570 could run GTA V pretty decent, and DOOM okay-ish.
Basically I'm looking for card that's either as fast or slightly faster.

What are my options?
>>
>>61558895

Basically anything made in the last 2 years is going to massacre your 570.

You may encounter trouble with activation, but otherwise it should be fine, assuming your boot order is appropriate.

Why do people shill the G4560 so much? Just buy a used quad core, even the i5 2500 still performs better than the G4560. The only reason I can see is the upgrade path but if you're so broke that you need to buy a dual core desktop CPU then you might as well save your shekels and wait for the next platform to be released rather than buying something like the 7700k.

I don't plan on overclocking anytime soon, as 7700k is already overkill, and don't have the money for $80-100 nice cooler.

It doesn't make any sense to spent 30% of the cpu value on a cpu cooler, $20-30 cooler is good enough, just buy a good quality thermal paste and keep it clean.

Any yuropoors around who have tried ordering from Mindfactory lately? They are conducting some sort of A/B testing it seems (getting the new site every now and then), and today I've tried to order parts twice but both time have ended up in some weird bug. The first one replaced a 1080 Ti in the basket with 7700K while keeping the price same. Kinda disappointing since the same card is now listed for 100€ more than previously. During the second order I got to the last part but after clicking confirm, I was thrown back to the front page with the items still in the basket and I got no confirmation e-mail.

Why do they have to have such a shitty website? T_T

I've been given a task to create a part list, assemble the parts and set up the PCs while maximizing economy/price-performance.

The computers will have a wide array of uses, mostly in offices and classrooms.
For example: Basic audio/photo editing, program&kernel compilation, web usage, MS Office, possibly light CUDA accelerated stuff.
Not many workloads you'd find outside a high school or typical office setting but the PC should still be versatile.

Another thing to consider is that the computers are going to be used for at LEAST 3 years with only software updates, and most of them within classroom/office environments are going to be connected to NAS.

Which OS? Which software are they installing? Are USB flash drives allowed? They may run out of space quickly depending on this.
>>
>>61562331
>Which OS?
Windows 10 because Kaby Lake, possibly/probably in a dual boot with a Linux distro in some use cases.
I'm not installing the OS on the PCs, it's up to the institutions/companies we sell them to.

>Which software are they installing?
Possible list of software:
- MS Office and Photoshop/GIMP on pretty much all of them
- DevCPP/Code::Blocks
- 3dsMax/Sketchup
- Audacity/FL Studio
- Visual Studio

>Are USB flash drives allowed?
Yep, security is still pretty bad around these parts.
Only a few - not really few anymore - years ago I got admin privileges in middle school by using the classic login screen on XP and logging in as the NT superadmin without a password.
>>
>>61554531
You can just call support and say your key works and they will activate it
>>
>>61562473
I think they will run out of space, visual studio alone can take up to 20 gigarillos, visual studio projects can easily take gigs too, msoffice is 8 photoshop and others can be from 10 to 20 too, the full adobe suit could reach 30 gigs, 3d shit is like 6gb but the files can takes gigs too, linux is 10-15 and windows is 30 plus botnet increasing over time. Audio files can take space too if they work with samples or raw data.

I would get 240gb minimum or just HDD's.
>>
>>61562724

The only Adobe things will probably be PS and DW but still... But the budget is tight and HDDs are so 1994.

Error Message.jpg
2MB, 3264x1824px
Guys, I really need some help on this one because I swear to God I'm about to lose my shit so fucking hard.

Based in the UK. Here's my parts list.
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/ZrKkBP
I just finished building at the weekend. I switched on and it went to black screen and asked for boot media. I assume that means everything went ok.
Went to the BIOS today and poked around in advanced mode, everything checked out.

Now, I'm trying to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit as my OS and I can't. I just can't. I've been trying for hours and I cannot figure this out. It's driving me insane.
Since I don't have an optical drive, I need to do it via USB. So I went into the BIOS and configured it to boot from USB rather than SSD.
Then I went to a 2nd computer, inserted the disc and prepared the USB.
I ran CMD as Administrator and entered the following
>Diskpart,
>List Disk
>Select Disk 1
>Clean
>Create Partition Primary
>Active
>Format Quick FS=FAT32
>Assign
>Exit
After that I just copied and pasted the contents of the Disc onto the USB, inserted it into the rear USB port and booted.
No go.
That's when I got this error message as I tried to install.
So I figured that I needed to include the drivers on the discs I got with the components. So I coped and pasted those onto the USB as well.
Still no go.
So I checked some youtube tutorials and found a program called WintoFlash, downloaded that, formatted the USB and used that program to copy the contents over.
Still no go.
So I figured maybe it's a hardware error, just unplug the SSD and HDD from the Mobo and install again.
Again I get the error message.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Please, if anybody can tell me what to do you would be my angel of fucking mercy.
>>
>>61562794
It's always worked, but you need to download drivers for keyboard and mice, and download an open-source third party mod that unblocks the updates. Kaby Lake has the same problems with 7 as Ryzen

Just finished getting everything set up and I will tell you this:
Unless you are planning to SLI, extreme OC, or add multiple pci cards, stick with the mATX form factor. At this point the margins in cost between mATX and ATX are virtually nonexistent below the high end level, yet the space savings can be significant.

x370 has more features but is more expensive. Thankfully on PCPartPicker you can dial in the specifications you want on a motherboard and it automatically filters the list.

Change the motherboard for one with better VRMs. continuing the white theme, I'd suggest an MSI B350M Mortar Arctic, or an MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic.
>>
>>61563573
Pretty much yes

X370 is overpriced as hell. Any of the b350 boards will run a 1600x at 1.45v, and most - if not all - of them will do it with a 1700/1800x too. Honestly the only thing you lose out on is the SLI support, slightly better peripheral components (intel NIC, sound), and I/O.

The biggest differences are the BIOS and overclock settings, which nobody even reviews in the first place.

X370 = wasting money

Where I live, the difference between a B350 board and an X370 board is anywhere from $100 - $300. It's a fucking joke.

You can save a bit by going with a 1tb hdd and a smaller 120gb ssd. You'd still have loads of room on that ssd after you add Windows to it and the hdd will come in useful for games as most games are coming out with sizes up to 100gb nowadays once all patches are installed.

Also you don't need a good certified psu. For half the price you can get a 600w bronze psu. The rating isn't to do with the quality of the psu it's related to the efficiency when pulling power at peak loads from the wall.

ye i think ima go with the hd and a smaller ssd. regarding power supply, my last one was a be quiet bronze that shorted out during a surge and fried my entire pc (5 y old, so not too bad). So i'd like a good quality psu that prevents that. Also, i heard 10% of your pc budget should be power supply, but not sure if its a marketing meme.

No need for a small gpu in a mid tower case.
>>
>>61563969
That was probably just a shit psu. If you get any bronze psu from a good manufacturer you'll be fine. Seasonic are the obvious choice. I'm actually using a used antec hcg 620w which is made by seasonic but sold by antec. I got it used 4 years ago for super cheap and it's still running fine to this day with no issue because it's built with high quality components but it's a bronze certified power supply.

Like I said the certification has nothing to do with the quality of the actual power supply it's all to do with efficiency when pulling power from the wall.
>>
>>61563622
>>61564011
Actually I just noticed you picked a micro atx aswell. Any reason for that considering your case is mid tower.
>>
>>61563475
No tweaks. Just go to Nvidia control panel, monitors and set your monitors to the respective frequency you want. The problem with mismatching frequency monitors is that your GPU doesn't idle properly but the latest drivers seem to have fixed that for me at least.
>>
>>61564057
i like the case and the fan config. but also considering a corsair carbide spec-m2. the small gpu is just because an rx480 costs more, and i don't think the difference will be too noticeable.

I'm fairly new to this still and haven't even tried overclocking my CPU or GPU, yet. Figured I'd wait until I can afford to replace the stock Wraith Spire or get better case cooling. Probably a dumb question but what should I replace first between my ram, cpu, or gpu? Noticing that I have to turn down settings to get 60 fps in newer games and I built it three years ago so I figure something is ready for an upgrade.

CPU: I-57 4690k

I already have a good GPU and sufficient hard drive space.

My concerns:

AIO Watercooler completely overkill, I really just want 3.9+Ghz if possible on the 1700.

Motherboard quality, I don't care about the features of x370 at all, but I would like a good quality b350. I've heard both avoid MSI, and that the pro carbon is good quality.

RAM is overkill, I do want high speed RAM with good CAS latency, not sure if THIS high is worth it.

I if I am trying to put together a budget gaming rig, is it worth trying to go with a used Xeon 2660 or something similar as the base and build around that?
>>
>>61566115
Make sure RAM is on the QvL.
Either pay more for the 1700x or drop the liquid cooler and use that money to buy a 1060.
>>
>>61565970
If you're going to upgrade your cpu you're going to need to buy DDR4 ram and a new mobo. Depending on what resolution and refresh rate you're playing at a 4690k should still be okay for another year or two - you might see bottlenecks at 1080/1440p 144hz but 60hz or 4k will be fine.

Sell the 290 while mining is still a thing, you should be able to get decent money for it, enough to get you half the cost of an upgrade to a 1080.

See if you can find another couple sticks of cheap used RAM to hold you over until you upgrade cpu, as most games today will hit 100% memory usage at 8gb, but it won't give you a huge perf boost like a new graphics card would.

I'm building my first PC and a friend has recommended the ACER XF240H 144hz monitor. I plan on doing 1080p gaming, hopefully 80-100fps on most games, but 60 wouldn't be all that bad either. I can't decide on a GPU though - I have an RX 580 picked out right now, but I'm tempted to go with Nvidia because I've heard it's just better in every way. The only thing stopping me is the price of similar performance Nvidia cards to the RX 580 - a 1060 is closest but I don't think it's much better than what I have picked out. And a 1070 or 1080 is significantly more expensive, so I am not sure if it is worth it for my build.

I have a Ryzen 5 1600 CPU picked out and a budget of $2000 CAD.

Any help is appreciated!

The ONLY reason a 7700K makes any sense now is if you're using it with a 144 Hz monitor.
