I've been running Gentoo on my home server for the past three years now but recently have been considering moving to a variant of BSD. What would you guys recommend? I'm looking for something that is lightweight, prioritizes security, and supports virtualization.

Windows Server 2016.

I'm looking for a Unix/-like environment but thanks for the input.

Why tho? What's wrong with Gentoo or other Linux distro?
I mean, if you want to feel "special" then go ahead install OpenBSD, but if you want to actually do things, stick with Linux.

What will be the primary job of your home server, OP?

I'm tired of having to tinker with my kernel all the time and screw with portage. It's a great tool but I just don't have the time to mess with it anymore. A BSD distro isn't a necessity I just thought it would be nice to get a true Unix experience. If you have any Linux distros you'd recommend I'm all ears.

What do you tinker with the kernel for, on home server of all places?
Also, just install Ubuntu Server LTS or Debian if you won't want to waste your time.

Web servers, home VPN, virtualization, and I'm possibly considering setting up an X11 server. My current machine is headless but I like the idea of using my other machines like terminals connected to a mainframe.

I don't think any BSDs (or any other operating system for that matter) implement kernel hardening like hardened gentoo used to have

Some packages require certain things to be enabled in the kernel take QEMU for example: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/QEMU#Kernel. Most packages don't but it's just a pain to configure your kernel only to find out you need to do it again to get a new package/service working. I know it should be a one time thing but sometimes things you don't think you'll need you end up needing later on.

Op, install proxmox on your home server, and now access your Web interface to install all bsd you want

for a home server and flexibility, I've been enjoying freenas for a while which is a bit more than a nas, you can set up a bunch of jails and VMs on it so is quite flexible, it makes it a bit easier to discover what you can do with zfs volume management and freebsd jails..

Ah, yes.
You can go with NTFS or NTFS with checksums...
