Running a 4 year old laptop that only cost like $350 new, it came with Win8 but I hated it so I downgraded it to Win7. It's got an Intel B960 CPU and 8gb of RAM, along with a 720p screen. Would installing Win10 speed my laptop up a bit (I've heard it's less resource intensive) or have no effect? Just FYI I don't play games or anything on this laptop, also buying a new one is not an option at the moment because I'm in the middle of moving a couple of states away.

Personally, I saw better results from installing windows 10 on my laptop (lower specs than yours), so you may very well see an increase in speeds like I did.

might as well just install a light weight distro
>>61506496
hmm...
try it out first
it's still free (Free)
freeeeeeeeeeeee

if u dont game get lubuntu or debian-lxqt
>>61506496
upgrade to windows server 2008 R2 or upgrade to debian virtualizing windows FLP
My personal experience is that W10 performs worse than W7 when using a traditional Hard Disk but performs far better when using a SSD.
But if you have time you should just try the update, use it for one or two weeks and see how it goes.

0.01 rupee has ben deposited into your account
you should upgrade to GNU/Linux

Windows 8.1 with classic shell is GOAT

That's not the windows 3.1 logo, that's the 2.1 and earlier logo. 3.1 had the same logo as 95; 3.0 had pic related.

install gentoo
>>61506496
Unironically, install gentoo.
In all seriousness,
>don't play games or anything on this laptop
Walk away from the Windows. Your situation is ideal for linux.

I guess he still wants a tear free windowing and hardware accelerated web video.

>Walk away from the Windows.
RIP OP's battery life and WiFi hardware support.
OP should try Linux from a live CD/USB or dual boot it first before committing, to make sure all hardware works. If your WiFi adapter is Qualcomm Atheros or Intel, don't bother checking compatibility because it will work.
Your CPU is fine for Windows 10. Windows 10 will churn your hard drive for background system tasks (updates, .NET optimization), especially while the computer is idle. (Disk 100% in Task Manager)
On my laptop with a single core CPU, Windows 10 is slower than 8, which are both significantly slower than 7 and XP. Don't know why people say newer versions of Windows require less resources, it simply isn't true.

>it simply isn't true
This.
I don't think any version of Windows required less resources than the one before it.

For starters W10 is not an upgrade. For two, you should rejoice and appreciate that W7 works on your W8 laptop and call it a sign from the gods. And finally W10, especially the most recent build, will significantly slow down your laptop.

This, frequent HDD activity spikes with 10.

Upgrade if you have a SSD.
OP here, I don't have an SSD (it's a $350 Gateway from 2013 after all) so it's sounding like sticking with 7 would be best after all. Thanks though.

It's not worth the upgrade. Just stick with 7.
