I really prefer the behaviour of the Windows taskbar where you can pin icons to it and when you launch them instead of there being a second item down there for the newly opened window the previously pinned icon is what you would click to minimize the window.
I tried every dock application in the get-deb and default ubuntu repo and the only docks that came close couldn't also open a "start" menu or just a menu from which you could launch any program on your computer.
Any advice on how I can get this functionality?
>>

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as GNU/Linux, is in fact, C/GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, C plus GNU plus Linux. GNU/Linux is an operating system unto itself, but almost everything running on your GNU/Linux system is written in C, thus being the most important part of the GNU/Linux system. C should receive credit for this.
>>

There aren't. The majority are forks (sometimes of forks). There's basically a few distros.
>>
>>61470645
>because it doesnt
Actually it isn't just spyware, it's also insecure as fuck since the connections are made via plain http. Which means, not only go your keystrokes to ubuntu servers, amazon and get further sold to literally who, but also your neighbour can lurk what you're typing in unity and/or manipulate the connections.
Why would you use a distro that allows such malicious "features" in the first place?
I know its now opt-in in newer Ubuntu versions, but the fact that the program is still there, ready to be enabled by some beginner because why not, is just horrible.

Hey y'all, so I'm gonna be switching to Linux! I'm tired of Windows, and I've realized I don't do much gaming, so it's pretty straightforward. My only questions are: Which distro would be good for audiophiles? I use a Schiit Fulla 2 for a DAC/AMP, and it working with the OS without much tinkering would be cool. I've been thinking of Linux Mint, or Ubuntu.

I've got an AMD Ryzen 1600, 16 GB 2400 RAM, an nVidia 1050 Ti. Will my computer work with Linux?

If I am idle for for more than approx. 15 minutes my laptop screen turns off automatically, but when I move my mouse or press a key the screen gets turned on again. However, 9 out of 10 times this is not the case and the screen will turn on, but will be black. I can only get my screen to work again by using xrandr on my second screen (which does work) to turn off my laptop screen and turn it on again a couple of times. The screen stays black when I go to a tty. How do I fix this?

I'm running Gentoo btw, but I've had this problem on every other distro that I've ever ran on this laptop.

Just got a RX 560 in the mail so I can start playing around with memecoins, but it's turning out to be a pretty big headache. First, the old server I was going to plug it into wont display video with it. The only time I can get it to work is to pass `nomodeset` at boot. It won't even display video booting from a USB stick. lspci shows [AMD/ATI] Baffin [Polaris11] (rev cf) -- which looks like a generic device?

I put the card into my other computer, and it works just fine both alongside my other gpu and on it's own. It's still being displayed as '[AMD/ATI] Baffin [Polaris11] (rev cf)' in lspci, but I do have legacy AMD drivers installed for an old HD 6850.

So my question is, what do you thinks going on with the lack of video output? And also, any good reading on installing legacy drivers alongside the up-to-date binary ones for two different GPUs?

I just updated Kubuntu from 16.10 to 17.04 and I get a black screen on boot after the splash.
When I was installing the update, I got an error "The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state" and that I should run sudo dpkg --configure a which i did but it didn't seem to do anything.

Guys I'm gonna throw this out there, for the last few days I've been trying out F2FS on my Nexus 7, it works ridiculously fucking fast so I wondered how this was possible and started reading into it, basically it seems that for anyone running flash-based storage (which includes SSDs) F2FS is superior.

I'm thinking about switching over my secondary laptop (with a SSD) to F2FS now.

Have any of you tried it on your main machine? How has it been? I'm intrigued that we could get some serious performance boost just by switching fs type.

Hi guys! IO've been trying to understand packages better lately, but I've came upon something that it is confusing me.

I've been told that it is common for backport packages to not be updated as same as main packages, even if backports are versions above.

My question is, how can I follow the changelogs of a package to check when it was updated, and compare it with their backport/main version?
>>
>>61475834

Clang or icc or any other compiler that comes down the line. Why is it allowed to only be compiled with gcc? Literally nothing else in the Linux environment is like this. There are forks and new competitors

>>61475935
It is true. There are gcc extensions that prevent other compilers from compiling the kernel.During the kernels upbringing they were just thrown in and no now cared because at the time it was the only userland avalible. But now 30 years later, there are other userlands which should be able to build the kernel for their own needs.
>>
>>61475983
That's like saying C# is bad because it won't compile with a C++ kernel.

Do you understand how hypocritical it is to shun extensions because they won't work on a compiler that doesn't support them?

Being incompatible isn't a bad thing, you don't actually have an argument beyond it doesn't work so its bad, when it actually does work, with gcc, which it was written for.

https://www.amazon.com/BrosTrend-600Mbps-Adapter-Wireless-WNA016/dp/B0118SPFCK/
which has god-awful Linux driver support.

After days of troubleshooting, I've finally gotten to the point where the drivers are working enough for Network Manager to show me nearby wireless networks, and ask for the WPA key when I select one. But then it just thinks for a minute and "activation of network connection failed".

Also, every time I reboot, the wireless option simply shows up as "unmanaged" until I restart NW.

Is there something obvious that I'm doing wrong here? At least I got the nitty gritty of the drivers to work, the system recognizes the dongle & everything, I think it's just a problem with Network Manager but who knows, I'm just a noob

How do people do this for fun? Like it just straight feels like I wasted so much time I could've spent actually doing something. Desktop looks alright I suppose but I still need some more programs any old DE could provide. Serious question to the ricers, how do you not feel worthless after this?

At least after ricing you have something to show for it, and now that the setup is just like you want it to be you can start reaping the benefits. Perhaps the skills you acquired come in handy one day. Some might find the process of ricing more important than the end goal, which for some might even be unreachable. All of life is a waste of time anyways.

I'm using plain i3wm.

I am using gimp a lot recently and noticed that I can't use Alt + Mouse to drag paths and selections or do any other stuff, because that is assigned to grabbing and moving windows in Linux (Unity Ubuntu 16.04). I looked into the shortcuts and all I could find is "Move Window: Alt+F7" and disabling that does not disable Alt+Mouse
Can anyone help how I can disable that?

How often does Arch updates mess with peoples files? I want to go ahead and install, but really don't want to go through the hassle when my system updates work against me

Arch does a hash check,if anything is being changed it will rename it ".pacnew" or ".pacsave".
Pacsave is the settings you've changed.Pacnew is the new config files. It varies on how important the changes are to the file, such as new default configs,it will save your settings to .pacsave instead of overwriting them.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman/Pacnew_and_Pacsave

There's usually no need for manual intervention and if there is, it's announced on the homepage and the mailing list. It's still a good idea to semi-regularly merge your old configs and the .pacnew files, but the differences are usually very limited making it really easy.

If you're talking about your personal files or home folder, of course it wont mess with that.

it shows the other people ( who are wannabe developers - enthusiast with no actual skill or programming knowledge themselves, or just new users ) that they know how to edit various config files.

I just like to keep things neet and lightweight without the whole thing looking like your typical '' muh terminals and animus and leet 1970s wood grain console arch look''

Also some people just fucking love skins and themes in any shape or form ( in any distro, program or game unrelated to this)

So, a month ago I finished reading pic related for the Linux+/LPIC-1 after slowly trudging through it over the past 1.5 years in my downtime at work (credit card machine tech support)

I feel like I've only retained bits and pieces from the long period of time it took to get through all of the chapters, as I was able to get the A+/Net+ both in a matter of 2 months.

How best should I refine my knowledge for the exam and, more importantly, the general knowhow that I would need to be effective in a position of admin somewhere?

What I'm currently using is the end of chapter exams/end of book test exam and an old laptop with opensuse on it. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

Installing Linux through Architect and it brings up installation types. Stable, and Developer. No matter what I choose the installation says its complete only giving me the option to reboot, shutdown, and lunch a virtual environment which is just a terminal.

What could be the deal?

Download the pre tests and take them and see where you fail at.Then go do those things.

Dont use shitty installers when the default setup is less then 10 commands

Got it. The end of book exam also helped filter which sections Im the weakest in.

This is all I could find and it is for gnome which should work with gimp. But I am pretty sure it is an X11 feature so there must be a toolkit independant way of setting it too.
