Since /mu/ doesn't actually listen to music, what speakers does /g/ own?
>>
Acarian systems Alon IVs. Front end equipment is a crown xls1000.2, emotiva pt-100, and a project debut carbon turntable with ortofon red cartridge.

Music-wise I listen to a lot of British rock (muse, Radiohead, Alt j), acoustic guitar stuff like Antoine dufour and Don Ross, and metal/djent like meshuggah, periphery, intervals, animals as leaders...

Just finished room treatment.
>>
Currently using the Adam A7X paired with the Audio-GD NOS 11.
>>
>>61467323
>not pictured: brilliant pebbles
>>
>>61467370
I'm using a class D pro amp, speaker cable and interconnects I made myself, and $50 worth of room treatment foam.

I'm about as anti snake-oil as it gets. Fuck off.
>>
>>61467266
Are those Forte's or choruses all the way to the right?
>>
>>61467414
Forte I
Cornwall I
Heresy I
CF-4
>>
>>61467474
Nice nice. My parents own a pair of choruses and my uncle had Forte's.

Klipsch have some flaws about the way they sound but what they do well in they Excel.
>>
JBL LSR305, pretty happy with them.
>>
>>61467498
I suppose it depends if you like the sound of horns and if the crossovers have been brought back up to spec for their age. And placement matters more with those two with the passives on the rear (depends on version of the chorus). I've had nothing but praise when people are over. But then again just about everyone else uses sound bars and cheap wal-mart tier products.

On another note...
I have a Marantz 2325 I'm debating having fully recapped/serviced (estimated total cost $850). I really like the warm sound it produces. I've thought about going the tube route but I have no idea where to start. Or if I stick with solid state what NEW products would be comparable. Having something like a McIntosh C50 with the meters would be neat looking.
>>
Thinking about trying to build some speakers, anyone have experience with that? I'm trying to get better at woodworking at it seems like a decent project.

If so, are you happy with them?
>>
I've got four Kenwood JL595s, though two of them are in a storage locker because I don't have room to use them for the surround setup that I'd like to have. I've also got a pair of Bic Venturi V52s on my desk.

I'm >>61467323 here

Before I switched to the alon IVs, I was using the 15 wpc push/pull el84 tube amp in the pic to drive cornscalas. Loved the sound, Klipsch/high efficiency speakers and tubes are a wonderful combo. The only reason Im not using the cornscalas now is because I found the alon IVs at an estate sale in the Hamptons and I've always been a big fan of magnepan and quad electrostatics but I really don't have the room in my home to support full dipole speakers. The alon speakers are a nice compromise and have Dynamics which is something I liked about the Klipsch. As far as your marantz, I'd have it restored just for the potential resale alone. You'll easily fetch $1,500 or more.
>>
>>61467605
Best kits are from meniscus audio, parts express, and madisound. It's a very rewarding project and worth the time and effort. Woodworking is very practical obviously and you can get incredible price/performance in comparison to most big box electronics offerings.

Kits id recommend for first timers are C-notes, the volt 10 from diysoundgroup, speedsters, or the continuum LS3/5a tribute. The boxes are easy to construct and mini monitors are a great start.

I tried and failed, still have the parts sitting in the garage. I'm pretty handy with wood working too. The issue? I tried to build them with a circular saw. I know it seems retarded, and it is, but I thought I could pull it off.

Unless you're going to build some complicated jig, you absolutely must use a table saw. You also need a router to cut you your holes, so unless you have these tools already you'll be spending quite a lot on just the tools to build your speakers.
>>
>>61467325
Same, except using Neko Audio stereo DAC
>>
these cute things, they sound ok
>>
>>61467323
Your setup is wasted on the music you listen to. What you listen to would sound good coming out of shitty desktop speakers.
>>
>>61469684
I think I'm gonna need a new extension plug. Mine is making my left side having some weird very subtle crackling sounds. I have my left and right on different wall outlets. I hope it's not the speakers but I'm worried it will be the speakers if I left it for too long.

How's the Neko pairing with the A7X by the way? I noticed mine have a much better bass response. I told myself it's placebo but maybe there is a difference.
>>
I have a pair of Advent 25th Anniversary speakers that I got for like $10 and refoamed. I have big plants on top of them which I'm sure fucks up the sound but whatever.

>>
>>61473059
Why did wide loudspeakers go out of fashion?

Everything is these slim boxes with no room for the acoustics inside.
>>
>>61473181
The baffle step. The less baffle the drivers encounter the better, meaning that slim speakers are typically more accurate.
>>
>>61473166
I listened to a bunch of speakers in the store before I ended up picking the Zensors both for price and that I thought they sounded good for the type of music I play.
Besides, DALI speakers are super cheap here, unlike in USA.

>>61473181
I wouldn't really have enough space to make use of full sized speakers, and these have more than enough sound for me since I'm not a person that listen to dumbstep or wall shaking noises, I like my music is a comfortable audio level.
But I'd rather listen to some Logitech speakers than Cerwin VEGA.

I got a pair of bose 141's off ebay and they're wonderful! Small but pack a punch, give some good bass even at low volumes. Everybody hates on bose but people agree that the 141's are pretty decent if you can get them for cheap.

However, I tried my luck again on ebay and bought another 141 speaker and for some reason I think this one just doesn't pack the same punch as my original two.

Is there anyway I can test it out? By ear I feel like the bass doesn't give the same "oompf" that my other two do. any thoughts? The foam on the cone and such looks good, no rot. I'm really not a total audiophile but I don't want a lesser speaker especially since my other two sound really great!
>>
>>61480424
Check out the crossover. I'm not sure how exactly the 141's are setup, but there's usually an inductor and a bipolar capacitor in there. See if they are up to spec.

Are those Minimus 7's or 77's? They do look the same but obviously the size is different between them.

Been a fan of the Minimus 7 since I first heard them in the early 1980s at a Radio Shack in my hometown, they were being powered by this masterpiece - seriously, it doesn't look like much, I know, but when it was coupled with the Minimus 7 and you played good source material through it with the Loudness circuit enabled I swear it was fucking audio nirvana.

I really miss that setup, that receiver and those speakers, holy fuck I'd pay a good price to get that two-piece setup again, a pristine pair of black Minimus 7 speakers to go with the STA-20, geez.

I've tried over the years to duplicate that audio quality with a variety of hardware from various makers and it's just never been the same.

I miss the early 1980s, I really do. All the tech we have today and it primarily sounds like absolute shit, sadly.

That receiver and those speakers, however, pure fucking magic.
>>
>>61480559
Ok, really not sure what any of that is and kind of don't want to pop the speaker open. It's old so chances that I end up breaking something by opening them up is high.

Plugged in my original 141 speaker and now I'm beginning to think it might have just been the positioning of my right speaker since it's not next to a wall.

The bass just sounds kind of flat like there isn't much depth to it

Yah, there was something truly magical about that combination, but it really just totally blew my socks off when I enabled the Loudness circuit. I know a lot of folks can't stand that shit and avoid it like the plague and prefer some 10-20-40 band EQ to fuck around with, but no matter what you were listening to, in a small room or having that setup on a desk in front of you, after you pressed play without the Loudness enabled it was mediocre, acceptable for most stuff but click the button into place and wham, suddenly it was fucking astonishingly different overall.

I can't adequately explain it, really, sometimes in life you just hear something and you never ever forget it, that was the kind of reaction I had the first time I heard that combination of hardware together, playing a CD I had at the time (Telarc's infamous Time Warp with the "digital" canons for the 1812 Overture) and even at the lowest acceptable volume those Minimus 7's and that receiver did that track some fucking justice, I kid you not.

Dammit, now I'm gonna have to start scouring eBay/craigslist/thrift stores hoping to find an STA-20 again. I've seen them on eBay from time to time but people KNOW what they sound like and still want $100-200 for 'em 30 fucking years later after it was originally manufactured.

I still want one myself, I really do, along with some black Minimus 7's in excellent condition, maybe ready for a speaker re-coning. I know there are replacement speakers to put in those metal cabinets and newer crossovers but I wouldn't change a thing, really, they were just that fucking good.

Look at these beautiful motherfuckers, awesome.

I too do some woodworking from time to time and have been wanting to build speakers. It will have to wait until I get around building a new desk though.
Have you checked out Kirby Meets Audio on youtube for speaker build videos? He also sells speakers, kits to build your own, or just the plans. I'm thinking about building these walnut speakers myself.

Don't try to cut the wood yourself if you don't have the proper tools & aren't prepared to invest in them. But that doesn't have to stop you from building - there are plenty of places that sell flat-pack kits & who will cut/CNC your own designs if you want something truly 'your own'.

Picrelated I bought flat-pack, only needed basic tools to assemble it (decent drill/driver + bits, wood glue, bunch of clamps, etc.). Would've been better if I had a router to roundover the edges, but it's fine as it is.

I'm looking to upgrade my subwoofer.

I think that I will benefit the most from 2 smaller subwoofers than one big.

But the issue is that I can't find a "small" one with a freq. response as low as the 16hz range.

Is that just a physical limitation?
I'm talking 8".

I have a budget around 1100usd, been considering SVS subs.
>>
>>61487458
16Hz is an incredibly low response for a sub of any size, let alone something small. What sort of content are you planning to listen to that actually goes down into that sort of infra territory?

And yes, it's largely a physical thing. A larger driver in a larger box can be efficiently tuned a lot lower than a smaller driver in a smaller box. Getting that sort of extension out of an 8" driver would require a laughably inefficient setup.
>>
>>61487544
Yeah that's what I thought. No 8" I've seen over here went below 20hz.

Oh I believe there's plenty of material that goes that low.
Listening to music and movies is a passionate thing to me, so I've always cared about keeping the hardware for it above average.

I've only used ported subs so far though. Want a bit more rapid kicks in the bass, so I'm considering getting a sealed.
It's a really tough choice, ported vs sealed.
>>
>>61485768
The entire setup is anti snake-oil and costs less than $600 total. That's cheaper than what most turbo-spergs spend on one computer component on this sub and I can guarantee it will out last that same computer.
>>
>>61487584
>Oh I believe there's plenty of material that goes that low.

You might want to double check that before you spend too much money or make other compromises sourcing a system that goes to 16Hz. Infra like that is incredibly rare in music (like, essentially unheard of) and very unusual in movies. Most people will probably only stand in front of a system capable of those sorts of frequencies a handful of times in their entire lives, so it's not surprising that hardly anybody produces that sort of content.

Unless you really do listen to a lot of infra content, you'd be better off getting a sub that rolls off at a more 'normal' 30-40Hz and which sounds better, because it's not trying to extend to frequencies that you're never going to play.
>>
>>61467266

>>
>>61467266
None. But I want a pair of neumann kh120.
>>
>>61487770
Ok, maybe there isn't that much at that range, but sub20 at least.

It's that range I live for though.

Getting the taste of something you don't have is a bad idea. I've craved it ever since I heard those low frequencies at a store.

The SVS SB-2000 is what I'm considering the most right now anyway.
>>
>>61488087
>but sub20 at least.

You're still talking about infra, which is still almost nonexistant outside of niche audio/visual art installations. What exactly is it that you listen to that you think needs this infra reproduction?
>>
>>61488193
I have come across plenty of songs where my current, broken, sub that goes down to 28hz couldn't reproduce the bass.
Can't check which they are right now but it's been enough to justify going lower.

Same with movies.

You seem so against my yearning for infra.
>>
>>61488193

Horns have a long history on studio monitors. Most monitors have shallow waveguides which are similar in principle to the horns they are derived from and used to stop banding in nearfield use. I liked the old massive JBL monitors but they are too big for me.

I like ribbon tweeters, Quad now do a reasonable price bookshelf type speaker and a relatively cheap floorstander but they are not likely to get into monitors soon to the relief of my wallet.

He's crying about the fact that the guy's taste in music happens to have him playing things that ultimately lack tonal diversity, even if they are still good music. It's not a critique of the quality of the music, but the composition.

He's basically some butthurt elitist crying about the fact that someone with a great system is listening to "low class" music, instead of the Voyager Deep Space recordings nonsensically remixed randomly by a computer and people purposefully eschewing all forms of musical composition, which is supposedly more sincere.

He's sorta right and sorta wrong.

Dynamics and sensitivity are still good things to have for horn speakers, and the directivity helps with stereo imaging in the sweet spot. That being said, horns do better in professional applications because they can generally create extremely high SPLs with not as much power.

It's one of those transducer technologies that's comparatively ancient and has a lot of drawbacks, but what it does do correctly it does better than most cone mids and dome tweeters.

My dad is an audiofag and is/was obsessed, not sure why I'm surprised. Dude literally runs software programs to tune his setup right.

Own a pair of Paradigm Atoms and am very satisfied with them. They sound a lot bigger than their bookshelf size suggests.

He probably does that because dsp has become incredible in the past decade for cleaning up fqr.

That being said, the JBL lsr305s are probably the best desktop/small form factor speaker you can get.

Audio doesn't have to be a rabbit hole if you get past the upgradeitis stage.

I've seen these mentioned a few times and their in my Amazon wishlist. However do I want just these speakers or do I want some kind of amp and subwoofer as well?

I'm not poorfagging btw so don't hold back, but just looking for something "pretty good" without going all-out. I know that doesn't objectively mean jack shit but that's as specific as I can be without knowing what's out there.

The best part of the lsr305s is that they're active, you just need a preamp or dac with a volume control and you're good to go.

The subwoofer is a personal choice and if you feel the need the extra bass after purchasing them, go ahead. I find subs difficult to blend under most circumstances but right now SVS and HSU research offer some crazy price/performance with subwoofers Below $500. Emotiva has some cheap subwoofers as well that would do well with them.

I'd get the lsr305s and a dac with a volume control, then if you feel you need the low end boost invest in a sub later.

the JBL lsr305s are self-powered so you don't need an amp; pretty much all speaker with an under 8in woofer would benefit from a sub, if you "need" it depends on what you use them for, movies and games always need a sub, for music it depends on the genre
also keep in mind that the JBL lsr305s are sold and work individually so each one needs to be connected to an outlet and you control their volume individually too, you can use a dac/preamp to connect both of them and use that to control the volume of both at the same time, if you want to add a sub you need a dac/preamp with a sub output
as an alternative i would suggest the q acoustics 3020, this are passive speakers so they do need an amp, i think they're better than the 305s but these absolutely need a sub (if you get a sub with high level inputs/outputs you can connect all easily with any amp)

Polk T50s, with a Polk PSW-10 woofer.
Teac NP-H750 DAC/Amp

I put it together for about $400 by scrounging around Amazon warehouse deals. More than happy with it for the price.

The psw10 is not too small for your ts50
>>

It's not. My biggest concern was that the NP-H750 only puts out 40 watts per channel, but I've been running it fine for two years now, and even gets stupid loud if I want it to.
