I havehad intermittent limited connectivity and web pages won't load giving me DNS unreachable. It has started with windows 10 iirc.

It only happens when browsing, never when I download, play games, or even fap. Never.

Changed from wifi to ethernet, had my router replaced, I've changed my PC since then. Tried all the ipconfig fixes and all that shit.

It still happens. I don't know what to do. Please help me, /g/, you're my last hope.

Also, it's intermittent and random, last a few seconds to a couple minute max when I get "DNS unreachable" in opera (or chromium) and I get limited network exclamation mark while it happens.
It's quite short but it's very random and annoying, generally happens once a day, or once every other day, but just yesterday it happend twice in an hour.

Hey /g/ I updated my graphics card driver (nvidia) and I had my first hard crash today (never had it before).

Temps were normal, but the crash was really bad (required cold reboot, pressing and holding power button). Could it be a driver issue?

When I booted again, the motherboard splash screen had for a split second some artifacts but then went back to normal.

I played the same game normally to check if the temps were going up, but it didn't. Played for about 15 mins normally.

Driver issue? GPU not good?
>>
So far I've only been using Linux on a shitty netbook and I wanted to get in on my tower, but upon starting the live usb (I tried several) I get usb device errors and all my usb periphery deactivates.

Googling told me that it's probably a hardware error, something about usb not getting enough power, but why the fuck does it work on windows then?
>>
>>61434472
Update: I tried restarting it again and the mobo splash screen had artifacts again (really quick).

But when I removed the PC from HDMI the splash screen had no artifacts.

GPU dying?

I like the way you party.
Go home server especially if you have cheap parts for it lying around. 4GB RAM should be plenty, and CPU almost doesn't matter. I think you would probably benefit from lots of SATA interfaces and more tuneability than the average consumer product would have.

I need to do a small scripting project but I'm pretty dumb and short on time and energy.

Basically I want to make a script which pops up a fullscreen borderless window in Windows 7, and in that window images display like a slideshow. I want to be able to set the display time, the folder from which to display the images, and whether to display them randomly or sequentially, and ideally to be able to do this all through keyboard commands in-program. It would also be nice if I could select multiple folders at once and still have it randomize.

I'd also like to do the same thing with folders and randomization but with music.

The back-end organization of all this is very very simple, but what I want to know is what's the easiest thing to use to make fullscreen windows in Win7 and (simply and in a non-involved but working way) open/display/play/switch image and audio files using simple grabber objects that I can manipulate more or less like ints or strings...ideally from a range of filetypes/encodes?

Bonus for an easy way to directly call functions by pressing keys so I can skip a CLI and a second screen to put it on. I was thinking Python but tkinter seems sort of painful to get into, honestly, I just want to do a few basic things.

>did you download a beta driver? those are quite unstable
It was upgraded by Geforce experience, so I'd guess no.

Right now the only issue is the (very quick) artifacts that show up on the mobo boot up screen, and only happens on HDMI (and it happens every time it boots)

But removing the HDMI cable I get no artifacts on mobo boot screen.

I'd guess it's a driver issue?

I need help. I installed a new video card, and when i boot it either turns on and black screens, or goes to a "press esc to open startup menu". I press Esc and i hear a soft beeping from my motherboard but nothing happens, and at regular intervals i get a louder short beep.

Some hardware info. I bought my whole new system except for ram. The old ram is ddr3 and its not supported by my new motherboard. So what i did was in the meantime install my old system in the new case, but put in the new video card. So hardware wise the video card is the only difference.

The motherboard is a shitty old foxconn from an HP prebuilt. My old gpu is a amd radeon hd6970, the new is a gtx 1080ti.
The "press esc for startup" thing is part of some shitty HP crap coded in the motherboard bios i think. The keyboard is cleary detected because of the short beeps, but unresponsive. The only thing i can imagine trying is plugging in my monitor to my motherboard video output and turning on integrated intel graphics. The problem is i currently don't have the vga or dvi cable for it. I only have an HDMI one and my motherboard doesn't.
I've tried installing the nvidia drivers but they won't install without the gpu plugged in.

Is there anything i can do? Other than waiting for my ram for my new mobo or trying with a cable that my mobo supports?
>>

I need this because it's current, ancient as fuck onboard graphics card supports OpenGL up to 1.1, and I need to upgrade to 2.0/.1 to be able to work on libGDX/Unity. I also cannot afford a new laptop at least until I graduate from college

Please help

GPU overheating anon here.

Tried to flash both mobo and GPU, nothing changed.
Reinstalled win10.
Still nothing.

tried GPU on friends PC and it never overheated or crashed.

Searched a bit more and think it might be the PSU that's failing to deliver enough, it's a 850W unit.

GPU is a 4GB GTX770.

Gonna try to mess over with the PSU...

Also after reinstall... Windows Explorer randomly crashes all the time. Folders get shut down, making it hard to do shit.
>>
>>61436102
if there are any pci slots on the laptop you can jack an extension cable to and then jack that into your gpu, that could work, you'd need a power supply for it though

Buying used HDDs is a bad idea, isn't? I was looking for HGST drives and found some supposedly new ones on a local ebay equivalent, but they are so cheap I'm sure they are not new (~60$ for 2TB Ultrastar 7K3000).
>>
>>61436783
depends, alot of companies throw out old shit and sometimes someone picks em up and resells them.

if you're using it for archiving, you might be setting yourself up for failure but for temporary storage it might be fine.

So my old man's Moto E 4G has recently started going from 70% battery to 0% instantly.

Maybe it has something to do with its calibration, I though, so I downloaded this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration

And followed the procedure. 100% was not 100% (it kept charging a long time before the mV counter actually hit the maximum value).

After ''''''calibrating''''' it, the battery last longer but it keeps shutting itself down at 70%, plus now when I charge it it gets up to 45 ºC and that app said it was 'overheated'.

So is it basically kill or can I do something else to properly calibrate this piece of shit?

Also, is there any brand that keeps their phone updated nowadays besides Google and the Nexus models? Motorola turned into shit after being bought by Lenovo. Nokia, maybe?

if 9500GT is powered by pcie solely then first option (pic related) would probably work.
some laptop brands like lenovo need custom bios to whitelist usage of egpu.
also you need to check if your laptop has enough pcie memory space (google: egpu TOLUD) to allocate egpu, else there is a tool to expand memory to 36bit space (DIY eGPU Setup 1.35)
i have rx480 running through exp gdc, laptop's asus, no bios flash was needed, and there was enough pcie memory space even with 2 sticks of ram and dGPU.

My dad has delegated the task of setting up a NAS or home server to me despite the fact I'm moving out in a few weeks
Basically, he wants to be able to back up photos, music, and films from laptops and phones to somewhere, and be able to access those files from phone, laptops, and some DLNA devices.
Being able to access them on the local network is an obvious must, but also being able to access them outside of the house would be a bonus

I know this is outside of NAS and more into the territory of a home server, but having a VPN on the machine would be advantageous because we both go to countries where the internet is restricted

I know there are the WD Home Cloud things and I know they can't do VPN's, but are they reliable?

Well yea. But it's almost as costly as running an electrical heater.

You're still "competing" against people with free or almost free electricity.

Honestly, insulate your house and use cheaper forms of power. At least wood pellet, gas or oil heaters TEND to be much cheaper than electrical ones ... and they can be augmented with fancier things like heat exchangers and the like.

>>
>>61440826
Linux is what a good XP successor might be like if Microsoft hadn't decided to go full retard and become more customer friendly & trustworthy instead. Can't see why you wouldn't use Linux.

But well, you can install XP on some machines still. It's just going to be horrible for utilizing cores, virtualization, hardware support and so on and so forth.

Windows 7/8 are a bit less problematic but even with these you might have an increasing number of hardware support issues. Many 3rd parties just stop making drivers for new products near the official end of life of MS products, and Windows 8's regular EOL is in January 2018.
>>
>>61440826
XP isn't supported anymore. You're fucking yourself over in the long term. Just go for something like Linux Mint or Solus Linux, they're vaguely similar to XP.

I don't see an issue.

So I want to setup my ssh server so that I can ssh into my main desktop on the go. I understand how to do this pretty easily but my concern is mainly security. What are the security risks of opening an ssh server outside of your local network and how can I mitigate them?
>>
>>61441007
It's really a question of if you want Microsoft/the NSA etc. know about your masturbation habits.

A few days ago my thinkpad x220 got pretty hot and shut off. I didn't think much of it at the time (it was so hot in my apartment, AC had been out) However, I went to use it today and it won't start up. The green indicator light around the power button comes on briefly along with the thinklight. The disk, mic, mute, and caps lock leds also come on momentarily. The fan will spin for a second and then it shuts off.

I've tried the usual holding the power button at various time increments with and without the battery/ram. As well as reseating the ram.

Any idea what my next steps should be? I'm not entirely sure how to even research the issue.

Should I postpone learning C?

I've been self studying C (my first programming language) for a month or two now. Progress has been pretty slow, but I've been content with what little I've made. One of my classes at uni requires us to use Java though, and I don't really know anything about it so I'll have to study it in my own time too. I just want some input. Would it be a good idea to still try and keep up with learning C while studying Java or should I just focus on Java for now since I actually need it for class? From what little I've seen of Java, there seems to be a bunch of similarities, but I've been having trouble wrapping my head around objects and classes.
>>
>>61441116
I'd like to keep automatic driver and system updates because I value my security and stability. I just want it to stop updating this specific driver.
>>
>>61441178
definitely focus on java
fuck C as first language
this is not 1995 or whenever it was cool

Learning C is terrible is because theres extremely little applicability of your new learn skill
seriously retards recommend it with reasoning that "other languages you would learn more easily"
like I am not even joking, its like learning tool thats suppose to help you learn the real tool.
and its so much bullshit, every language will help you learn another language 10 times easier.

keep with java, really focus
>>
>>61441178
just focus on whatever you do your assignments in. you'll be able to get more help from your prof and classmates which will make the learning experience easier.
in the beginning you shouldn't focus much on "learning a language" but rather learning to program because once you learn to program learning the syntax of a new language is not nearly as hard. Plus, the syntax of java is based on C so by continuing C practice you're not expanding our skillset much and you're just taking away time you could dedicate to improving yoiur general programming skills in java.

take mobo out
leave inside cpu and ram, nothing else
plug in PC speaker so you get notification beeps
start it, do you get some beeps?
if no, pull out ram and try to start now
do you get beeps?

if no, mobo is dead 99% chance, cpu is dead 1%

Advantage Stack - Objects allocated on the stack get deallocated and destroyed auto-magically when they go out of scope.
Advantage Heap - Objects allocated on the stack get deallocated and destroyed auto-magically when they go out of scope, whether or not you need them later.

Gotcha, they are advertised as a WD company I noticed. One final question: are SSHD's and "gaming hard drives" just marketing memes or are they worth looking into? Overall I want the most storage for my dollar but if I can squeeze some better performance out of the drive for a few extra bucks I'll do it.

Buy a SSD for anything that needs performance and buy HDD (or in specific circumstances, maybe tape drives) for bulk storage.

Anybody know how to get retroarch on an iPad pro running iOS 10? There's no guides for 10 and everyone just says to use Cydia impactor with zero explanation.
>>
>>61442196
You can allocate them as local to main, until you hit the max allowable stack size for your implementation, which will be smaller than the heap size. One of my UNIX lab users found that out the hard way while allocating an enormous multi-dimensional array of doubles.
>>
>>61442387
How big is the heap compared to the stack?
>>
>>61442429
It varies entirely by implementation. Check the documentation for your compiler and OS combination.

I am not an expert by any means, but I looked a little into this. The problem seems to be dicks just scanning for open ports, and then bruteforcing their way in there. One thing they always try is port 22, because that's the default ssh one. One of the more simple security increases is to change that port. However, I think that's just security through obscurity.
The best way I think is to set up a VPN. Though with this you have a couple of options, which don't all work the way you want them. This is about as far as I got.

What's the consensus on wireless mice? General browsing and gaming (tactical shooters like Arma/Squad/Red Orchestra mainly).

How's their latency? How's the battery life (they advertise like 3 months but I'm assuming that's just standby time)? Anything else I should know?

I've got a logitech G502 which I've had for a couple of years. Still going strong but the cable has become deformed and just from where it's been lying awkwardly and the braiding has shrunk and so it can't be straightened out. I upgraded to this from the G500 which shit the bed due to the cable as well.

I'm moving apartments soon and am looking for an excuse to upgrade my set up.

I have the same question regarding latency and battery life regarding wireless keyboards, too. I see those advertising battery lives of over a year which is just insane unless, again, they're just referring to standby time.

it's retail, all retail that deal with returns have to check serial numbers

I've heard there is a similar problem with people buying old desktops and throwing new video cards. Supposedly updating bios may fix the issue. If that doesn't work it could be that the new card is drawing too much power from the slot.
