If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

Will an i5 2500 outperform an i5 3320M? I'm poor as shit and I'm thinking about buying a used office PC and putting a GT1030 in it because right now I'm using a Thinkpad X230 as my main PC that I've put a 500GB SSD in but I'll probably sell it and buy a desktop instead.

I've had an XFX RX480 8gb for about 3-4 months and I got it for about $240. I'm seeing some are selling for $350, but realistically what can I expect?

I want to buy a graphics card. My annual salary is $90,000 USD (poorfag here). My upper limit on a card is $1000. My operating system is a Debian-like. I don't care about closed drivers. I intend to use it for VR, JTR, numerical computing, and some gaming, in order of frequency. No interest in SLI / Crossfire.

What am I best off getting? 1080ti? Vega Frontier? Vega X*? I'll be using air cooling. Presently leaning towards the 1080ti.

>VR
1070 is a minimum, and if you're insistent on getting one right now, the price is so inflated that you might as well take the <$100 step up to a 1080.

From there, it's just a question if you want to spend another ~$200 for 47% increase in VR performance with the 1080ti (according to reports of steam's VR performance test). Tests on games like Dirt Rally show they actually perform nearly identically, even with upscaling, so it's just a question of how much difference that extra 47% in future titles. Nobody has a crystal ball to see the future so we don't know how much longer that'll make the ti last over the vanilla 1080, so you'd basically be taking a $200 gamble on longevity.

Again, this all depends on if you insist on buying one right now rather than waiting for a price drop.
>>
>>61413408
No, the FX 8XXX are set to be succeeded by the Ryzen R3, which is releasing in less than two weeks. A similarly priced AM4 build will be a much better investment, you can get a much better used GPU for the same price of a new RX 550 too.
>>

Alright boys. I got a MSI B350 Tomahawk and a Ryzen 1600 today from Amazon and threw them together. First run I got a CPU debug led, took out a stick of RAM and the debug led went away but I still cant get it to post.

Is my shit busted? How long do first time posts take? Ive heard that some mobos with older bios dont work with R5s.
>>
>>61412944
Those are the equivalent of overclockable i5s, all R3s are 4c/4t, I'm surprised there's nothing that's 4c/8t. Expect price drops for the i5s currently out or a rearrangement of the terms intel uses to define what an i3, i5, or i7 is in a few years.
>>
>>61413552
RAM on the QVL?
>>
>>61413552
Some first time POSTs can take a while to cold boot. But more importantly check the QVL for the mobo if the RAM is supported or not.

>>
>>61413638
No anon, don't bother with i5s right now. Intel CPUs go up to 90 or 100% usage on AAA garbage nowadays if they're 4 cores, while on a 6 core Ryzen the CPU load is about half that.
You're going to need a new PSU, don't trust your old one to work well enough, not to mention taking the PSU plug out from the motherboard of a PSU already plugged in is a fucking BITCH and a half.
>>
>>61413653
>if it makes you feel better last year I was living in my 1999 toyota corolla eating rice and water twice a day
Holy shit anon and now you're making 90k USD. You've gone far.
Invest some into stocks and start saving up so you don't get shat on by whatever life further throws at you right fucking now.
If you're already comfortable with using Nvidia for GPU passthrough and the workarounds you need to do to get it working, then you already have your answer, get a 1080ti.
>>
I'm a big dummy, does this build suck or not? Mostly for vidya https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2y8LTH
>>
>>61413822
Any reason why you don't get a small SSD?
>>
>>61413849
>>61413822

I was going to say that you should get a 120GB or larger SSD for your boot drive. Get a larger one if you want a few games on it as well.

I would spring for the EVGA G3 650W PSU. It's higher quality than the NEX series.

I'd also recommend the Cryorig H7 (you can get a refurb on Amazon for $35) for a cooler. Better than the 212 for just a little more money.
>>
Is it worth upgrading from a GTX 750 Ti 2GB to a GTX 1050 Ti 4GB?

The only two games I've tried playing on the 750 Ti that I can't play so far are Doom and NieR: Automata.

On one hand, it's a very small upgrade in the grand scheme of things, on the other hand, I'm scared that the cryptominers will keep GPU prices inflated for a very, very long time and I feel like I might have to upgrade soon while I can still afford it.
>>
>>61413894
Do it. Its a major upgrade.
>>
>>61413894

>>
>>61413927

>>
>>61413947
I just went on Newegg. 1050tis are selling for 160 minimum.
That's ridiculous. MSRP is 140, and you could usually find them cheaper months ago. This is definitely inflated.
>>
>>61413894
1050 Ti is about on par with a 770
>>
>>61413990
They're inflated, but this isn't the kind of inflation that's hit the RX 480/580 and 1060.
>>
>>61413990
That sucks. I bought one a couple of months ago for like 130, EVGA

Stop spreading FUD.
Previous Intel CPUs like Sandy Bridge and prior to that were soldered and not only did not hit a voltage wall like Ryzen does but overclocked like a dream. Ryzen being soldered is a plus and don't overheat like current Intel. The real downside to Ryzen is the voltage wall.
You should not have to replace the TIM of a CPU and thereby void the warranty or risk damaging the CPU, not for AMD, not for Intel. Skimping on the solder just tells me that the faggots in Intel didn't want to use up so much gold. Yes, good solder has gold in it for that sweet conductivity.
>>

Compared to those intel cpus, yes ryzen does have overheating issues and perform badly when soldering should've benefited it. Thats the facts, but its been proven soldering isn't viable due to the constant heating/cooling and over time causes issues even if minor there will always be some. still though the TP intel uses currently sucks ass dick and everyone shouldn't need to delid just to fix intel's shitty job.

More FUD. There are anons with Sandy Bridge CPUs still going strong at the same temps idle and under load to this day.

>Yes, good solder has gold in it for that sweet conductivity

Uh, no sweetie. A layer of gold plating is applied to the underside of the IHS so that the solder will properly attach to it. The solder itself is indium-based.

Other than this, Does memory clock speed matter?
There's two 1050s, for the same price ($110), and that seems to be the only diference. One has the memetic "gaming" name, the other is "OC."

Yes, at a 200$ markup. What a deal.

Miners will mine ETH for future proof of stake claims and do not give a fuck about current market price.

There was no "flood" of gpus. Quit spreading misinformation.
>>
>>61416400
desu you really don't want one anyways.
Us miners usually botch them onto a metal cage, run them 24/7 on a dirty power supply (cheapest high-watt), and never clean them or do anything but move them to one place or another.
They're also often in humidity or outside conditions as we often leave them near a window to cool.

Seriously even if there was a dump you shouldn't buy them. Even refurbished is 100x better.
The funny thing is people think that means the miners lost money mining when if they sell their cards as long as they mined the past 30~ days they're profitable lmao

So far every website I've tried has very dispersed information that, while it does explain some technicalities, has not really alleviated me from the confusion I have when looking at the broad variety of parts that exist.
This is all pretty frustrating but I actually would like to try myself on a custom build, and this is stopping me dead in my tracks. I plan on building a Ryzen system in a Silverstone Sugo SG11B for very specific reasons.

Problem is, the PSU is mounted right above the CPU cooler and only has 82mm of clearance. There are no rad mounts and no ventilation holes for the PSU to be mounted fan side up.

So, with very limited cooler clearance, and the PSU fan fighting for air with the CPU cooler, what should I do?

I could let it suffocate and hope it won't explode.
I could drill in ventilation holes in the top.
I could open the PSU and see if I can't reconfigure its wiring so the fan spins in reverse, sucking in air from the back.
I could reconfigure the CPU cooler to pull air away instead of pushing it towards.

What other options do I have here?

I'm looking into the Noctua NH-L12 as it can become low enough to fit, but with only one fan it might not be enough. I, perhaps naively, would want at least some overclock out of mt 1600.

Another solution I thought of was looking into an SFX PSU with an ATX conversion bracket. That might buy me a few more millimeters.

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 Windforce OC 6GB GDDR5 (329€ @ Pccomponentes) OR Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 G1 Gaming 6GB GDDR5 (339€ @ Pccomponentes). I can't find any RX 580 at a reasonable price. What's the difference between the 1060 Windforce and not Windforce?
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B350-F Gaming (129,95 € @ Pccomponentes)

I'll be using a 116 GB SSD, 1TB memory, a Noctua CPU heatsink (I don't have the box anymore, so I don't know which model it is) and a 60 Hz LED screen.

I'd also like to get some headphones and a mechanical keyboard, but I haven't looked at these yet.

Any ideas on how to improve this? Thanks!
>>

Some games are PC exclusives. Like WH2
>>
>>61419629
You will need to order a AM4 bracket for your CPU heatsink so keep that in mind.
Check that your RAM is on your motherboard QvL.
1060 is your only option the 580 is simply out of stock.

For a mechanical keyboard go to the mechanical keyboard gen and ask them.

A G4560 and a 1050ti still runs games better than consoles. You'll be looking at above 30 fps at 1080p, something consoles today can't do.

The RAM I chose is F4-3200C16D-16GVK, but the list doesn't have it (it has F4-3200C16D-8GVK , though) I suppose this 16 instead of 8 is because this is a 2x8GB RAM, just to make sure, will it be fine?
Also, I've been looking for these AM4 brackets but I can't find them, where should I look for these?

No idea. If it is not on the list there is just no guarantee. You can google and see if there are people with your build that worked out for them.

How do people feel about Ryzen vs Kaby Lake for vidya? Would it be a safer pick to go with Intel, since their better single thread performance has, until now, aligned better with how game engines work, or is the engine programming reaching a stage where AMD many core shit might actually be relevant for it in the near future?

Kaby lake , as long as you mean the 7600k or the 7700k, are still far superior for gaming.

Especialy the 7700k.

shills for AMD on /g/ (there are alot of them) will tell you quad cores will go obsolete in the next 1-2 years which they have been saying for the past 5 years.

Pure gaming: Go with Intel
Gaming + Production related shit: Go with Ryzen
>>
>>61420638
Which country is that?
>>
>>61420622
Get faster ram. 2666 mhz or faster. 3000/3200 mhz recommended. Fast ram might not make a difference on Intel, but it makes a world of difference on Ryzen due to the way the architecture works.
Get a fully modular PSU.
Add an SSD as a boot drive, 240-250 GB recommended as it's the best bang for buck

>>
>>61420622
Looks good but dude don't skimp out on the RAM. Get a minimum of 16gb in 3000mhz for the Ryzen, anything less and you're intentionally crippling your system. Also be sure to double and triple check it against MSI's QVL for that mobo, and if you can't find it, go looking for anecdotal evidence of it work from others
>>
>>61420686
Ignore the 7600k. The only Intel chips worth anything are the Pentium G4560 and the Core i7 7700k. If you're in the price range for a 7600k, get a Ryzen 5 1600 instead.
>>
>>61420651
>7600k

Yeah, if you play Minecraft or low end games where CPU performance doesn't even matter anyway
Throw in a BF1 or Witcher 3 in there and it gets outperformed by even a 1500x

I do, Asus Crosshair VI Hero, TridentZ G.Skill 3600 (down to 3200), and a 1700X. I haven't spent much time trying to get above 3200 but simple tests have failed but it is stable at 3200. You'll probably need to tickle the DRAM voltage just a touch (~0.02V) to keep it stable.

You can very likely trivially OC to 3.5Ghz at least without touching the CPU voltage. Get RAM that's at least 3000 Mhz.
>>
>>61421209
https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/nMP2Cy

Better CPU and better RAM for less money, the 1600 comes with a cooler. I'd also go for a mATX build but that's mostly just a personal taste thing.

>>61421392
More cores helps if you multitask a lot or run a lot of crap in the background, and will stay relevant for longer than a quad core if you don't plan on upgrading for a while.
