The first time water, or fire, or even the fucking sun (for an extended period of time) touches it, it’s gone, and it’s gone for good. If I digitize it, it’s preserved in its current form for the remainder of human history, and I can make as many copies as I want to make sure the contents of the book are never lost to history.
