Mac or PC?

Mac for professional work, PC for play, Linux for server, BSD for router.
>>
Stupid questions thread this is not.

I honestly can't choose. I've been using Windows all my live and have literally never had a good experience with it. I'm thinking of switching to Mac but then again it could just be 'grass is greener' syndrome.
Maybe computers in general just suck right now and all I can do is deal with it.

Occasionally, I still think of them as IBMs rather than PCs.
>>

>- muh shitty design

I like Windows' design better, because it's more heterosexual (everything is straight and square, not ambiguously rounded).
>>
>>61384364
my story didn't go like that. no wifi, no ethernet, stuck in 800x600... literally would not have been able to complete the install if I didn't have another computer on hand. you're right though, his laptop was kinda old, but not ancient by any means.

same deal with my current laptop. i ahve 2 hard drives (one in optical bay) you'll have to take my word, but installing Linux was WAY easier and faster than installing windows 7 (had to do the same hoop jumping with drivers) but in that case it was Windows 7 and my laptop is pretty new so it's a little more excusable
>>
>>61384364
Literally this. I've been a windows fag for 20 years and the biggest problem I had was missing network drivers. Only once. I used hundreds of different computers and did dozens of fresh installations.
I don't understand the retards here. Windows is literally the easiest OS to install and use. It's harder than ever for regular user to fuck up something in it.
>>

same, it's fucking weird that IBM doesn't even make pc's now

not even hating on Windows, I use Windows everyday I just use it as a video game console now whereas I use Linux for the internet and shit because it's safer and faster
>>

They don't call them PCs because "macs" are a marketing trick. They created the illusion that their PCs are something from another planet, not just an ordinary PC.

Installing Linux easier, what's hard is getting anything to run on it without updating thousands of packages that may or may not fuck up your installation permanently
Not only that several of those updates will fail thanks to the fact that all the package managers are pieces of shit so the only way to install stuff is through pure trial and error, because there is no help on the internet
Why do you think you never see GNU/Linux users actually do anything?
They only rice their desktop and say "lol xD I'm so different because I use FOSS xDD D"

that's the thing, back in the day when the terminology came out, they didn't. there were IBM compatible computers (PC's) and macs. you could not put MS DOS or Windows on a mac back then.

now they have the same architecture, but the terminology remains for greybushes like myself
>>

ok, i get that you came from reddit and think you're supposed to be mean and edgy to fit in, but I promise you that in the past PC meant IBM compatible, and in the past macs were NOT IBM compatible. I'm not trolling you, I'm trying to shed some light on why people don't really call macs PC's despite the fact they are "personal computers". The original macs were NOT ibm compatible. So people took to calling IBM compatible computers "PC's" and Apple computers that used the macintosh os "Macs". This is semantics. Nobody called Amigas "PC's" either, because they were not IBM compatible. This is just the truth, I am not making it up. You have to be fucking YOUNG to not know this. There is nothing wrong with that. I wish I were still young. I don't expect you to know this shit because you weren't alive.
>>
>>61384998
also, when Apple came out with these "I'm a Mac" ads, macs were already using the same architecture as wintel pcs. This is because everyone already called PC's and Macs those names.

Windows was never able to install in 10 minutes when it came on discs.
I haven't tried 8 or 10, but up to 7, there was no drivers with the OS.
I got a thinkpad which was much the official microsoft laptop until they started to make their own tablets.
Something as simple as downloading the ISO is a pain too.
There is no official way to get the OS, I had to find a german mirror of digital river.
After I have found the right version (Wihout any documentation to tell you what the hell the difference is), I used the code on the back of the machine, and there was no fucking drivers.
No ethernet, no wifi, no graphics driver, the touchpad and trackpoint didn't work properly, it was a mess.
The usb ports were downgraded to usb 1.1 or something.
And when you need other computers in order to get it to work, I would say it is poor support.

Once Apple dropped PPC Adobe was left with x86. Now the entire Adobe Suite runs just as well on Windows as it does on OSX, sometimes better.

Very comfily. I have the fullscreen start menu assigned to wheelbutton, so everything is available just one click away, at any moment. Don't even need to reach for the keyboard, or search for anything. One click - menu, 2nd click - launch program.

Everything organised the way I want it to. You can remove and place any program in the fullscreen start menu.

Ricing is easy as fuck, just run around installing different themes and different sets of wallpapers and maybe some extensions.

For the most part I have most of what I need, great music players, movies, VM's in case I need to test something or run something in a more stable environment, LibreOffice, and most of all Steam which has a rising amount of games that work natively quite well, most of the software I use is FOSS.

of course I am sometimes concerned with things breaking if I mess around with packages or some config settings, but that's because I"m mostly still quite a noob, all it takes though are some full disk backups or BTRFS with snapshots or some other thing I have yet to hear about.

srsly what is a personal computer anyway? :^)

mac follows IBM compatibility and x86_64 architecture

they use intel hardware...

PC is the hardware and linux/mac/bsd/windows all run on a PC

i you arent running a server its a PC

before the PC it was all mainframe servers that were owned by businesses

then people took smaller versions home that they personally owned

ie the personal computer

Any computer or laptop that is your own can be called a PC.
>>
>>61395365
PC specifically refers to any computer that's IBM PC-compatible. Macs are PC's since 2006, since the hardware is the exact same as any other x86 PC. PowerPC Macs weren't technically PC's since they weren't compatible with x86 PC software. (The PC in PowerPC stands for "Performance Computing," not "Personal Computer.")

I've had both numerous times. I've had anything from a $3k MBP with Retina Display to a MacBook Air to an Asus ROG to a shitty Dell Inspiron.

I had a lot of fun with my MBP and Air. The backlit keyboard was great at night and the screen looked amazing. The Asus was more trouble than anything since it needed three repairs before I got the MacBook Air and that broke as well (screen cracked)

If I were to get another PC that were prebuilt, it would be the Razer Blade Pro. If Mac, the latest MBP.

Mac's get bitches. PC's do not. No one cares about how large of a Steam library you have or what specs you've got.

I do printer and scanner tech support for both.

PC users = Either really (and I mean really) fucking stupid or actually tech savvy and calling in with complex issues. Windows 7 a best. Windows 8 and 10 are a fucking nightmare to support without remote access. Especially since the metro interface on 10 breaks more things than it fixes. However, much easier to troubleshoot since I know most of the shortcuts by now to get deeper into the OS.

Mac users = Middle of the line, generally more uppity and affluent, but jfc I get so many mac users who won't shut the fuck up about how much they love their macs and can't even do basic fucking shit like navigate through finder. I get some people who use them for graphic design with high end photos printer, and those customers tend to be either really nice or straight up assholes. It's frustrating as fuck when OSX just decides to shit itself and stop working for no reason and the customer starts yelling at me saying "I paid XXX amount of bucks for this overpriced facebook machine WHY WON'T IT JUST WORK" and it's something really bizarre within CUPS or ICA that just refuses to work no matter how many times I fix disk permissions or delete and reinstall the library pkgs

TL;DR: Windows is easy to fix but shitty to support on later versions. Macs easy to support but shitty to fix and have the most annoying customers (except for the really hot college girls, I just flirt with them) Pic related

The Launchpad has a search bar at the top so you don't have to go through all the pages to find what you want.
It's easier to use the Launchpad or Spotlight to open applications than going into the Applications folder.
