X1 carbon 5th gen with WQHD screen, 16 gb of ram and 1tb ssd.
Should I do it or just order the FHD one with 8 gb of ram for 300 less?

Get fhd with less ram and less storage, you will get significantly better batery life which matters more on such laptop

Screen is dirt cheap to upgrade with epp ($50)
and ram is the only thing soldered so I want 16gb for vms.
Storage I could go with less but honestly their upgrade prices are too good too compared to buying a standalone ssd.
The thing keeping me from ordering is I don't want to get a bad model for $1580 and have to send it back, for that money I wouldn't have to think about it for a mbp with lower specs.
