Any anons remember the Pandora? Well this is the Pyra. Run by a new team, so won't semi-fail like the Pandora did. Can we get a discussion on this? Anyone preordering one?

I don't know man, back when Pandora was a newer idea mobile phones weren't as powerful as they are now. This whole idea is kind of antiquated since you can bring around a ThinkPad x2XX with a SSD and have a much more usable machine for most likely around the same price or cheaper.
>>
>>61376097
But can you fit it in your pocket?
That's what I think is most appealing about this. I can fit it in a pocket and take it anywhere. With the ports, USB and mini-HDMI, I can easily convert it into a full desktop pretty much anywhere.
Plus, I can't run debian on my phone, possibly some you can, not sure, but not mine.
>>
>>61376155
there are lots of useless things that will fit in my pockets. Doesn't mean I want to carry them around or spend $700 dollarydoos on shitty hardware and a tiny keyboard
>>
>that price
>that shitty screen
>thick as a brick, it's even brick red
>that shitty keyboard so they can fit those shitty game controls
I thought the whole idea was that we can go back and apply modern technology to make UMPCs what they should have been
>>
>>61376179
This could completely replace a phone, though. This can do anything a phone can do - and more.

>>61376212
What do you expect from a small company that isn't making millions of units?
Screen is 720p, you think you actually would want some 1080p on a 5 inch screen? Really? 4x the computing power for no noticeable increase?
it even says
>other colors
The keyboard has had dozens of polls and revisions, it's supposed to be really nice. a lot of R&D went into the keyboard.
>>
>>61376037
>shitty keyboard
>gaymer controls
>weak specs
>overpriced

yeah no, even the gpd whateveritscalled is a meme but at least that's a little decent
>>
>>61376272
>This could completely replace a phone, though. This can do anything a phone can do - and more.
can it send/receive phone calls and SMS? can it run snapchat?

I don't want to carry around an autism brick just because it runs ganoo linux
>>
>>61376037
Even the GPD WIN is a better option than this shitheap.
>>
>>61376418
>runs windows
>has shitty keyboard
>did I mention it runs windows?
>doesn't have USB ports and expandable memory
>Doesn't have GPS or 4G

yeah, if by a little decent you mean it can actually power on, then yes, you are correct.
>>
>>61376448
It has 4G with SMS capabilities, yes.
It can run snapchat inside an instance of android. Just need an external camera if you want to take a picture.

>>61376492
why not just use an ssh client on my android phone and buy something like this?
>>
>>61376546
Well you don't have to ditch your phone unless you want to. You could just use it as a regular pocket laptop. It's awfully difficult to play a PS1 game on a phone, but this makes it simple. It can also allow you to play Diablo II anywhere, and many more games actually. Possibilities are endless.
>>
>>61376581
I guess if you want to lug around a keyboard and usb cable everywhere and only be able to use shh, then sure... but the Pyra can do so much more. I dare you to try to play Diablo 2 or a PS1 game over ssh on your android device, tell me how well that works out for you...
>>
>>61376272
>What do you expect from a small company that isn't making millions of units?
I'm not really expecting anything out of them, but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy it
>>61376581
Do you have this or something like it? I've been looking for a good phone keyboard and stand

>>61376061

>>61376616

>I dare you to try to lay Diablo 2 or a PS1 game over ssh on your android device
I don't play video games, let alone play on handheld devices when I am out in public
>>61376666
checked

I do not have such a keyboard but I plan to get one when I buy a new phone.
>>
Well I like it it's a shame it has a shitty 5 year old arm processor found in the Nexus 10

Gpdwins controls and keyboard looks like ass.

Hopefully the fact that a competitor, the SmachZ, got revealed as a total scam and fraud, will help pyra sells since it's cool someone is making a Linux handheld
>>
>>61376582
No, that's the point, I really, really do want to. The pocket-laptop stuff and vidya gaymen is just gravy. Modern phones piss me off to no end, if I can get a little thing with a keyboard that runs Debian and can be easily repaired, I'd be very happy to never deal with Google again. They don't make phones with physical keyboards at all anymore. (unless you get a blackberry, and that comes with its own problems) Removable batteries are pretty rare, as are SD cards. And buing a phone entails a lot of research to find something unlockable that I can flash a ROM onto and rip (most of) the botnettery out of. This thing, if it can indeed do phone stuff like SMS, would solve lots and lots of frustrations for me.

That said, I want to wait until the thing actually comes out, instead of preordering anything.
>>
>>61376037
Think about all the fucked up things we can do in the hacking world with this thing. We can make this a portable kali autism machine and penetrate all sorts of networks while looking like we're playing animal crossing.

Just get a gpd win...

Actually a real product, and it works well.
>>
>>61376768
It's still a keyboard.

>>61376834
Well, the hardware is there for SMS, someone just needs to write the software. But with as many devs are on this project it won't take long for that to happen. The Pyra is also upgradrable so in the future there could be faster CPU, better screen, etc.

>>61377048
Yet still doesn't even do a third of what this can do... so nah.
>>
>>61377102
Are you actually retarded? The GPD WIN it's literally just an Intel Windows 10 computer.

How in the name of fuck are you implying a Linux shoebox with the power of the old Nexus 10 from 2012 is even comparable?

Even if you're autistic and want Linux, the GPD Pocket does that for the same price, with non horseshit build quality
>>
>>61377102
What can the Pyra do that the Win cannot? I believe you can run SteamOS on the Win...
>>
>>61377161

Yes actually...

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/gpd-pocket-7-0-umpc-laptop-ubuntu-or-win-10-os-laptop--2#/

^ If you need to be autistic and have a Linux Machine, the pocket does all of those, and they have actual working models that have been reviewed.

Otherwise yes, the Win has literally all of those except "Muh Linux", and if you're serious about wanting a mobile console, I can't imagine how stupid you would need to be to give up in Windows game compatibility
>>
>>61377264
Someone shilling this autistically hard id assume you'd at least browse the pyra forums to see that the 4gb model is plagued with bugs and crashes, ie is not functional
>>
>>61377276
I'm no shill. I just really want this thing and I thought a lot of people here would too, seeing as what it can do and basically you can have full debian pc anywhere you go.
>>
>>61377248
Yeah but can it run Crysis?
>>
>>61377291
I don't want it for the games, that is just a bonus. I want it cause I can go anywhere and have a mini linux laptop with me.

>>61377306

On little nub mouse? that's it?
Pyra can use the analog stick for mouse and shoulder buttons for left/right/middle click
Plus no gaming controls... what if I want to play some FF7 or Dino Crisis? or SNES games?
>>
>>61377320

The GPD Win can ironically.
>>
Moto + Moto keyboard
>>
>>61376272
>This could completely replace a phone
Unfortunately it can't, desu the best interface to manage small decides is the one current mobile phones use. Devices like that one would be really uncomfortable to use and even if you do prefer it most people won't.
>>
>>61377362
How is it better when it can't even do a third of what the pyra does? Specs aren't everything. If it can't do something the Pyra can do then it doesn't matter if it has 100x the specs, it simply can't do it.
It's a niche device and if you can't see the appeal then it's not for you.

It's like someone wanting to buy a skateboard and you're all OH MAN BUT A CAR IS FASTER but they're like but does it fit i your backpack? and then you're all, BUT IT'S FASTER!! IT'S BETTER!!!

and you're all comparing two different things and says one is better because some arbitrary reason
>>
>>61377349
Then get the fucking GPD Pocket, it's a better product, it already exists and has been reviewed, costs the same price, and has 5 years more modern hardware.

On top of all that it is a Linux PC, so your whole "muh Linux" argument is pointless

have dedicated gaming controls? use a shoulder button to click the mouse? REMOVE THE BATTERY? microSD support? integrated 4G?

I've dealt with "removable battery" devices with more painful battery changeout systems. Just 6 screws needed and you pull the cable out and change the battery.
>>
>>61377575
It's not even 100% open source, you retard. There is no point in getting a shit bulky umpc with an ancient angry birds processor.

> Game Controls

GPD Win, literally look at a picture of it

> Shoulder button

Also supported on the Already released GPD win, Both have a touch screen and the pocket has a ThinkPad style nub

> Removable battery

That you're planning on charging how exactly? You would need to put each battery in the unit, charge it, then put another battery in and charge that one too before any work.

Also what is a battery bank, because guess what the Win/Pocket charge off USB

Use a low profile flash drive, it's the same thing, it even has multiple ports so it doesn't get in your way

>>61377654
I'd rather have 1% open source than 0%

>>61377671
GPD win has no linux, so gaming controls are pointless if it lacks one of the defining features of the Pyra.

>thinkpad style nub
yeah those are just wooonderful....

Pyra also charges off USB but has 12hour battery life, the point isn't to have multiple batteries charged, it's that when the battery fails or deteriorates too much, you just buy another, not a whole new unit.

I'd rather use a microSD card and two full sized SD card slots with also having USB3 and an OTG slot...yeah

Oh yes so I can carry around another thing to do something that the Pyra has internally, great.

I'm no shill and you're an idiot for thinking their team would pay someone to shill for an obvious niche device, especially when they already have over 1k preorders, it's already gonna be manufactured

>>61377721
The microSD slot is right behind the battery... there are multiple pics of it. And no you don't, you just pop the battery cover off and pull the battery out... no tools needed. Did you even check the device out?

>>61377745

I got the OpenPandora, also both the GPD Win and GPD Pocket. All nifty toys for me.
The Pyra is just outdated and dead. Followed it since it started, nothings changed.

Only an idiot throws out money without a guarantee, at least when I bought the OpenPandora I had a guarantee I will receive the device or money back.
With the Pyra I could just lose it.

Nope.
Even to support a SoC as good as the Win it would require a larger heatsink and fan then it could physically fit. The Win requires active cooling to retain Turbo speeds.
Second, there is no better SoC that takes less power.

Will never work.
To produce something like this you need a decent consumer base to 'mass' produce them.
The target audience for something like this is so niche that it will cost more to produce, never mind the employee's wage, that it makes it over expensive. And taking in said 'target audience', they won't pay the price it's at for what it is.
May be a good toy, but you'll soon get bored and alienated by it, won't be a good product.

Other companies have since improved that idea into better, and actually available products.

So it's better because even when it's worse in every other aspect, it's better because of 4G and GPS? Something easily added to the Win via it's Full Size USB 3.1 port on the back?

I really like the idea of a UMPC, however I just wish that they had more power.

Pretty much, I just want something which maybe has worse battery life than my phone, but more power than it, say somewhere in the realm of being able to push ps2 emulation, however, given that intel is being pushed arround by amd now, they're putting less focus into their mobile processors now, meaning that it likely won't happen, given that no one realy wants to make better processor or this preformance, given the greater battery drain it would take, and the relatively niche market.

Of course it is, they had to bend the whole build around the gamepad. Personally I think the alumium model seems to strike a good balance since one of the huge issues with rev one was the trigger buttons.

But anyways, the Pocket is aiming to be a UMPC rather than a console alternative, so yeah they went all out on build quality, although some people seem to dislike parts of the keyboard. Still a prototype so it's possible they'll uprev on the review units.

>I-I'll carry the peripherals in my backpack
Then just carry a fucking laptop
>>
>>61386655
The WIN is aimed at being a portable windows console, so they built it around that use case of mainly having the device to play most non demanding games at acceptable frame rates. So they did things like the active cooling to help performance, the whole case being styled like a 3DS, etc.

The Pocket is a different device with a different use case in mind, more like people who need a light weight computer to use constantly who don't want to carry around the "bulk". I have to agree it's a pretty nitch use case, might be popular with network admins for example, or the other types who are running around needing a thin client for light work. Personally I'll stick with my netbook for that kind of stuff.

Anyways that means they went for a bigger screen, keyboard for more typing focused computing, less need for the manual fan, etc.

Back in my day people on /g/ would have been like, wow awesome! wonder what I could do with this, I bet I could hack it to do blah blah... let's see how far I can push it... and now it's like, oh man now the best specs the world can have? must be trash... can't run the newest AAA game? trash. it'll be better if I carry around a backpack full of shit to do what that already does in your pocket? it must be trash..

But why is having a device in a pocket a selling point though?
>>
>>61387457
because I don't wanna carry around an autism case everywhere I go?

It's the concept that you can carry your computer with you as conveniently as a phone, so you have it available to you at all times. The original Pandora was a cool idea, but it fell short.

This particular clone is kind of useless since it's so old, more recent attempts are like what GPD have been trying to do take the idea to a x86 Windows/Linux system.

It's really if you want a handheld windows game machine or a linux/windows handheld workstation.

Still not giving me the selling point reason.

It's not even in the same class as the GPD
Also, onlu OP is shilling here, GPD is logically better, fight me

This would have been awesome 5-10 years ago, but the market already has products that are cheaper, and better than this.
I remember when an ipod was awesome, but if released now for $700 it would probably be considered shit.

I want to be a autistic pokémon trainer too, with my mini-computer on the pocket and a backpack filled with lego and a /g/ sticker on the backpack.

You do know backpacks are fairly common these days, they make plenty of professional looking ones too.

Not everyone is still using their spongebag squarepants backpack from 4th grade because it's 'perfectly good'
