Life before social media and smartphones, what was it like?
>>
>>61364787
There was just no social media and smartphones back then.

What the fuck did you even expect?
>>
The same as it is now, AFTER social media.

>>61364787

Like early-to-mid 2000's?

I would say it was a good balance of everyone having instant communication (cellphone and text) but not to the point where it consumed a majority of your day.

Internet was also way better. A lot more original content, and groups were separated into different niche websites. Everyone used an online handle, nickname, fake name whatever you want to call it and things were way less personal.
>>
>carry piece of paper in wallet
>write down EVERYTHING on his paper

>>61364787
less superficial
>>
I used to carry a nokia and a palm pilot. Pretty good combo served me well between 2000 and 2010. I grew up before internet or even personal computers. Life was good we read more magazines, talked on the phone, used to meet up and hang out.

Now

This is the correct answer. Social media as we know it today are cancer. I wish we never had them. Todays high speed Internet without social everything would be nice.

>>
>>61364787
Not being bothered constantly, not seeing hundreds of thousands of selfies and worthless options every year.
>>
>>61364906
that time was the sweet spot of the internet.
>>
>>61364787
Women actually socialized with men instead of traveling around with their girlfriends looking for cool instagram photo opportunities.
>>
You had to memorize the phone numbers of people you gave enough of a shit about to want to call. When you went out, nobody would know where you were unless you told them and they couldn't get in touch with you unless they went to find you in person or waited for you to call them back from your home phone.

The internet was the wild west. Corporate presence was minimal to nonexistent, there was almost no advertising, and nothing was centralized. The concept of vlogging didn't exist, nobody posted dozens and dozens of pictures of themselves doing mundane shit, and if you wanted to talk to other people you had to find message boards (which were almost always confined to a narrow range of topics and had small communities) or use chatrooms. Nobody used their real name for anything, ever. The very idea of a website like Facebook where everyone has their real first/last name, city of residence, workplace, etc. listed for whoever to see would make heads explode.
>>
>>61366986
socializing being reduced to nothing but girls trying to find cute photo opportunities for their instagram is incredibly annoying

it's like going to a concert and then watching it through your phone while recording, it destroys the immediacy of the experience

Going outside to park to play basketball or bike outside in park.

Going to library to rent books/movies/use computers.

Yeah, that's pretty strange. Instead of experiencing the moment people like to capture it just so they can either post it or forget it forever. What I also find pretty strange is that people meet but then look at their phones all the time

It was black and white. I've heard they didn't invent colors yet.
>>
>>61364787

As far as social media, hard to say. I'm a privacy advocate which means when I post on the web, I do so anonymously. Nothing I do traces back to me personally (and you can do this with almost anything if you know what you're doing). I was pretty much mostly alone before social media and not much has changed.

Now smart phones and (more importantly) tablets have changed EVERYTHING. It's fucking insane all I can do on a small 10in device thinner than most of my books, even with the case covering it. Unlimited manga, books, magazines, movies/tv shows, and pretty much 90% of what I do on my desktop.

See kids, there was this thing we used to experience called "boredom". It's where you literally have nothing to do and enjoy. You just exist and wait for time to move on in the hopes of something interesting eventually happening. That time is long gone.
>>
>>61364787
I used to get directions off of mapquest and print them out on paper to take into my car when I didn't know how to get somewhere. My parents thought it was crazy you could get directions like that, they wanted to do everything on maps you'd pick up at a gas station.

You could only tell when movies were on by either going to the theater, or opening a local newspaper and going to the page with the movie times on it.
>>
>>61367359
Once upon a time it was like that, we called it Livejournal/Blogspot/Xanga. Myspace was what ushered in the era of spamming photos.
>>
>>61364787

it was better and less autistic.
>>
>opening a local newspaper and going to the page with the movie times on it.
Yes, and watching trailer on tv was exciting, and then talking f2f with your friends about what to watch and when to go to the movies.

Or you'd phone your best friends on your family's house phone, that was attached to a base by a cord that then plugged into the wall, and was especially cool if you could get more than one other person on at once, but that was only available if you paid for it, and you'd bike to go meet up with them somewhere and be bored/spend your allowance together.

And now that you can know instantly where anyone is at all times you can't think of many reasons to even meet all of a sudden, except to go through the usual social cliques of eating out, and drinking maybe. Very little to tell to one another except either trying to fill the silence or reminisce about OP times.

I think we have different POVs because I'm not an austistic neckbeard and actually enjoyed real life and actual social interactions and activities.

Better human interaction in general.
Memes/ideas spreading more slowly.

You can have a normal social life without them. You're an idiot if you think otherwise. You can message your friends on a computer or call them from a "dumbphone".

>Hell even your mom/brother expects you to respond to their idiotic texts ASAP 24/7 now
They expected you to do the same before. They were worried sick if you didn't answer your "dumphone" back then or even worse when you didn't come home at the appropriate time. Just because you have no proper relationship with your mother doesn't mean everyone else doesn't.

>>61367841

You think. But it's not that.

Better friends do it less, but they all do it.
They do prefer to spend their time with me, it's just that once they look into the screen "for just one second", be it smartphone or facebook or whatever, they're completely absent.
All their attention is 100% consumed by that thingy.

Sure, they'll look away 30 seconds later, but during these 30 seconds they're completely and truly gone.
You can talk and they'll pretend to have listened, with, at best, only a faint clue of what you talked about

Yeah, they are still ""with"" you. But once they look something up (usually getting a text from someone is all they need) and you don't have your own phone to fiddle with meanwhile, you're fucked for ~30 seconds.
And believe me, it's incredibly disruptive when it comes to human relations.

You can disagree if you want, but that's my experience.

But that's the thing, only the best of the best music from the past gets remembered, stands the test of time.

ABBA is one of the best, most iconic bands of the 80s. That would be like bringing up Michael Jackson or Nirvana for your case that music in the past was better. Those are some of the most legendary names in music obviously.

My case still stands; pop music has always been shit save for a few outliers who will likely be remembered forever.

The primary ways for accessing the internet as a kid was the family desktop and the school desktops. But people didn't go on it as much as they would later. VHS/DVD, cable/satellite tv, Gameboy/DS, etc. were all big deals.

>>
>>61367987
Way to pass the blame.

People have priorities too.
If they value their girlfriend more than me (as they should), they'll sure as hell check up their messages the instant she pops up.
They'll excuse themselves since they respect me, but it'd be a huge misunderstanding of tact for me to demand them to ignore more important things because I'm here too.

All I'm saying is smartphones add a mix of lots of things into the "here and now". Including instantly-arriving messages from important people.
Before phones you had no distractions when you were hanging out. This isn't the case.

What you described in your post is exactly the correct answer to your own question.

People have the right to privacy, but most prefer fame, or at the very least, attention / social status. As such, many of those people (the majority) give up their basic human rights to privacy just so they can show you their own highlight reel, or just to be seen by their internet friends.

As Google, Facebook, and all of them have made more and more privacy obsolete, many people have chosen to just give what remains of said privacy in order to afford themselves the convenience of using said things, not knowing they are being used in the process.

It is kinda like the person that gets laid all the time. Persona A (Majority) tells you all about it, and in much detail, while person B (Minority) chooses to be more private and reveal limited info, really, only when they feel it is appropriate (or had too much to drink).

The same kids that were taught to stay anonymous by their parents are now parents themselves, and are instead teaching their kids to be attention whores, because THEY are now attention whores themselves.

In fact, many people who are now grandparents also gave up privacy, not for attention, but just to stay connected to their friends and family, who, in the end, willingly gave up their privacy out of narcissism long ago.

Now that selfies have become the norm and Snap Chat / Instagram are at their peak, shit is bound to only get worse.

This is true there were sites like Newgrounds, YTMND, etc. Everyone had a AIM,MSN messenger and everyone talked more in the messenger daily and shared things that way or talked in conversations with everyone else. Some days you would talk other days you would not. It was just whatever whenever.

Social media I think has made us into narcissistic people that only try to make memes for Fame and for attention not because it's funny or silly. The only thing I do like in a way is the ability to spread the word about something and to give exposure to certain companies.

- play cassette tapes until the cassette player eats it, fix it by stretching the tape on your jeans, use ballpen to rewind it if using a Walkman to conserve batteries
- wait for your favorite song to play on the radio so you can record it in your mixtape which your friend will borrow and expect it not to be returned for weeks or months

Society wasn't as fractured.

Social media has allowed fringe groups to connect and have an over-blown sense of self-important relevance than they really deserve. This goes for extreme hate groups, extreme SJWs, extreme attention whores ... you name it.

Before social newtorking, these extremists were isolated, and they could see that they were not normal because they were surrounded. Now, by finding other like-minded extremists, and grouping together on social media, their sense of social importance has become exaggerated and over-bearing, and they think their voice should be equal with everyone else's. It is a tyranny of the minority.

Then you faggots came out of the woodwork like a bunch of retarded zombies, and we didn't have enough ammunition to keep you at bay.
That's what happens you know...when the zombie invasion starts. Video games would lead you to believe there's some sort of escape or somewhere you can survive. But every bunker fails eventually. It's only a matter of time.
>>
>>61372678
This happens to everything though.

Once upon a time we had this thing called 'Santarchy' and it was just punks and whatever who did performance art shenanigans.

Then the Facebook crowd found out about it and it became a pub crawl or normie pubs and slutty santas. The Facebook crowd also killed the early 2000s zombie walk, and pretty much everything else that was interesting. The Eternal Summer

The only one thing I really miss is cybercafes, or whatever you call them in merica.
>no internet so I spent my time doing other shit
>every time I wanted to know about something Id write it down in a piece of paper
>"how 2 pass this part on the videoogmae"
>"biggest tree where"
>"local videogaem store"
>"cavalier projection how to do??"
>arrive at the cafe, pay for an hour
>everything on my list now seems uninteresting because Ive already asked friends and family about them
>just spend an hour looking at flash animations and browsing in general
>talk to some kid on the cafe, play some LAN games
>ask around if you had any problem
That rough camaraderie of the computer-less kids in my town, where you didnt really *like* any of them, but you needed one more guy to play diablo 2 with. You'd eventually make friends with them and spend the rest of the day chasing seagulls down the beach. You'll never talk with him again, probably, but you were friends for a day.
No nerds for liking videogames. No geek elitism, no chads, no stacies, no actual "taste" on anything, no underhanded friendships. Simpler times.

I'd say people are more in the moment now. Back then the only information available to you was what was in your immediate vicinity. Now you can be aware of things happening across the world pretty much instantly. It's fundamentally changed the way I think about where I am and what I'm doing. My physical body isn't the most important thing about me, it's the information I share with others that's important. I keep in good shape only to facilitate the information I share and consume online.
>>
>>61367270
I do the same. I hate smartphones and all that social media shit which brainwashes people. When twitter and facebook became too popular along with the fact even most retarded of people can afford to have a smartphone and post their opinions so everyone can read them made collective IQ of world to drop and it is going to decline further. In the past people read books but now they are glued to their fucking phones. Idiocracy is happening in about 50 years from now.

Do people even go to libraries any more? Now anyone can self publish literal manure on internet and use that as "facts" and "knowledge". This combined with fact internet will be hugely commercialized to the point you can't even log in without either your social security card or credit card. Screenshot my post, this will happen in 10 years from now. It will suck. You have seen how 4chan has developed from niche website to a place which is now becoming filled with so called normal people and hidden marketing agenda. Shit and retardation will consume us all, sadly.
>>
>>61374735
>Do people even go to libraries any more?
They've closed a few libraries where i live and next year they're implementing Overdrive to have an online library so normies and old ladies can read bestseller garbage like 50 shades on their kindles.
Any money they actually saved by closing down the libraries will be spent on deals for shit books with Overdrive, there must've been some nice bribing going on.

Because now the big companies and even your government is tracking and profiling you in secret. Google is archiving everything what you type and post on internet. This is all more or less secret now but in the future it wont be a secret because people are going to be forced to accept the fact that everything what you do on internet is 'public space' and they are going to implement some kind of universal accounting system which you are going to use only with your own personal id card, similar to passport... This sounds dystopian but it will happen in 10 to 20 years from now. Luckily I'm already pretty old by then and I'm sure there will be some underground ways to interact with likeminded people but that's where it's headed.

But when this happens your government doesn't need to do anything in secret though. Do you have a passport? Your fingerprints are in database already along with everything you have done in the past. This is normal. But they need to add your internet usage and computer usage to that database as well...

And yet there are people who say "go ahead, i don't have anything to hide lel XDDD". They don't really understand what it is about, it's about principle. Do you let that weird man stare you while you take a shower naked? Why does that bother you but someone making a database of all your recorded history doesn't?
[/end foaming]
>>
>>61375847
>"go ahead, i don't have anything to hide lel XDDD".
People think tracking is okay because it "tailors your experience" and it's "the way things work nowadays in order to provide you with a better service".

Agreed it served it's purpose basically for all of us in high school. To get us through it and to get ready to start life in adulthood. Glad I did otherwise I would never go far in life.

Thanks to social media/smartphones people don't do shit anymore. They got there damn heads glued down looking at the phone all the time unless they at work and even then they still do it during breaks or lunch. Or taking personal calls at any old time while at work. According to a lot of Chiropractors, there's been a real serious increase of cases of Forward head posture (your posture is all fucked up so your head is literately angled forwards over your shoulders, which fucks up your spine) thanks to all the gawking at the smart phones. I've seen people walk across a busy road gawking on there phone, paying no attention to anything (such as a truck/car/etc) that may be coming down at them. People are lazy bastards now, don't do really any math or lookup shit, now it's all "google what's 5x5" or "google, where's the nearest town close to me". I miss the 80s/90's/early 2000s. Look at the 80's TV shows, people were more into life and plus the shows were hell of a lot better than the shit they got now.

The thing is tricking your brain into thinking your actual real life is boring does not really work in your favor.

This is about society, everyone changed, they don't go out anymore.

You don't see people outside until the dawn like the 90s.

And it's not whining, it WAS better on a social level, now it's just more convenient.
>>
People ITT are retarded and only list the negatives while not realizing the benefits outweigh it.

>Not having to go to the store all the time just order it online and ensure you always have the lowest price=more free time
>Forgot something important at work/uni etc just search the name of some colleague and add them on social media to alert/ask them what you want
>You only have to install a keylogger on your girlfriend's laptop to know for sure if she is cheating on you or not simply by reading through her facebook account instead of you always being uncertain about cheated upon
>You can fake similar interests and stuff by quickly looking through people's facebook. This gives tech savvy people a leg up on auditioning/job opportunities/dating.
>Raising kids is a whole lot easier Just give them a tablet with pre-installed apps and keylogger to read their conversations on social media. You know exactly what your children are doing

I can keep going on and on about how great life is now compared to back then. ESPECIALLY as a /g/ person. Personally I hook up a lot more now and I feel like I have way more free time while actually working more than back in the late 90s.

>It reminds me of my lost youth, of hopes that never came true.
Of that warm summer dusk when you felt like you had all your life in front of you, and the girl at your side was all that it mattered.

Fuck you anon, I was having a good day.

I might as well add this anecdote to the thread: one day a friend of mine tells to download this program for my phone, telling me it's fun. It let us talk using the internet on our mobiles without sms, which was incredible. Plus it let us send emoticons. So we used it for a few days and then decided it was useless. I uninstalled it because it costed too much to be constantly connected to the internet and we already had SMS. So this program was a very early stage WhatsApp and I think I was one of the first in my country to have ever used it. A few years later everybody were using it, and now it's pretty much a standard where I live.
