Don't know the context of the discussion, but isn't this at least somewhat true when it comes to a typical consumer? Most computers and phones can handle content consumption just fine, so why should they care about the hardware beyond a level of "does it feel sturdy".

Historically one of the big justifications for paying Apple's price premiums on their hardware was that you were paying for superior hardware over competing DOS and Windows machines. In particular this referred to SCSI hard drives and Motorola and later IBM Power processors Apple used as standard.
First the SCSI interfaces went in favor of IDE and the premiums remained.
Then the processors went in favor of Intel's Core chips and the premiums remained.
This was literally the cornerstone of the justification for their pricing model and it just went away when it became inconvenient.
