Will the cheapo mid 00's XP laptops ever be considered retro? I have a couple of these as backup machines and they can still do modern tasks like playing HD video.
>>
>>61361697

I would love to hear what they liked about that era when that day comes. For me it was the time when we said goodbyes to the beige boxes and hardware like FM synth sound cards. Then started the increase of low quality products, totally devoid of any aesthetic.
>>
>>61361889
>low quality products
Bitch please, all those value sound cards with FM synths.

Low quality products devoid of any aesthetic always existed.
>>
>>61361697
>>61361721

I really doubt it. These old retro threads always have computers that were either a) insanely popular or b)had a timeless design.

So the MacBooks, EliteBooks, ThinkPads, Latitudes, ToughBooks and Vaios will be retro but pretty much everything else from the XP era won't be.
>>
>>61361972
>These old retro threads always have computers that were either a) insanely popular or b)had a timeless design.
t-thanks... I'll remember not to post any of my random clone machine anymore
>>
>>61361990
A clone of a recognizable design is still recognizable. Clones are interesting as well because the practice of cloning a computer really doesn't exist any more.
>>
>>61361948

They do have a certain charm that comes from their uniqueness. If they didn't have the standard OPL synth from Yamaha, they would have their own implementation that was slightly different. I'm not saying low quality products never existed, of course they did, but can you really claim that their numbers haven't increased? For example, 90's keyboards usually had laser etched keys, which will basically never wear out. You don't see those these days.

So the battery in this was getting crusty and I decided to remove it before it caused any damage. I've ordered some bits to install a battery holder and such. In the meantime it turns out this fucker can't even get to bios without it's battery. Wire the old battery back in? boots. no battery? nope.
Super strange, most I've seen just lose their time and various parameters. oh well, new battery stuff is on it's way.
>>
>>61370325
Nice, specs?

Does it get any power fed back into the battery when you turn it on? You could use a supercapacitor then, no hassle with batteries.
Does it say anything without the battery? I've encountered a few systems that just give a black screen without a CMOS battery.
>>
>>61370430
It's a 25Mhz 486 SX (sad), with 8 mb of ram, and a ~200mb hard drive. At the moment I've got some generic 1mb vga card in it, a SB16, and a 3com network card.

I plan to do some more upgrades to it. It'll happily take a faster cpu and I'd like to bump up the ram.

Power is fed back into the battery yes. I was plaining on just using cr2032 and a diode to stop it from charging, though I'm not sure how long it'll actually last.

Nah it doesn't say anything. Just a black screen and no response without it. It's the first machine of this era I've seen to do that. I thought at first maybe I'd fucked it up, but sure enough with a battery it's fine.
>>
>>61370226
I think not, it's probably some italian corporate computer from the 80s but i can't quite find the model
>>
>>61365635
He did a really bad job on this really.
>>
>>61370542
Very cool.
Is it a VLB machine or ISA olnly?
Got a CPU socket for upgrades?

Happy upgrading, seems like a fun machine to pimp up.

>Power is fed back into the battery yes. I was plaining on just using cr2032 and a diode to stop it from charging, though I'm not sure how long it'll actually last.
Just an idea, my 486 uses a supercap after the battery leaked and it has been working great.
>>
Hey /retro/, what are some recommended computers that are user friendly if I wanna open it up.
>>
>>61370768
Open up, physically?
Late 80's and 90's Macintoshes.
All-in-keyboard Amigas.

Pretty much even old X86 are "user friendly" just because they are still quite simple.

Why?
>>
>>61370325
Just noticed the OS/2 Warp and C++ set box, noice.
>>
>>61370790
Yeah.
I still like it to run Windows, so I'm probably gonna go with a old x86.
Why? I really don't know why, I guess I just wanna buy an old computer before the prices rise.

are there any listings out there or even archives of native OS/2 1.x software beyond the couple versions of Excel/Word that were released on it?

it feels wrong running PC-DOS on a PS/2 but the fuckups with DOS mode on 1.x make it compelling if there isn't any native software I can run on it anyway

Oh the FreeBSD project is pretty much nothing, its mainly curiosity of getting it running. Is there a benefit from going with a dual Xeon workstation vs any generic computer from that era?

IBM PS/2 look nice but come with a price, Compaq seems to be one more friendly to my wallet. Thanks anon, have a nice day.

I just got one of these weird-ass things in good working condition from Craigslist. Got everything set up so far except the wifi (which might work once I take out the adapter I stole from my desktop) and the tablet pen, which I'm not sure if it's a problem with the pen or the digitizer or the software. Who knows.

Right now I'm trying to get XP up to speed on it, and I was considering slapping LXLE on it to make it slightly more functional.

NT 4.0, 2000 and XP (with the classic theme) are the only comfy versions of Windows. Windows 9x is theoretically comfy, but in practice too much of a pain to come back to and use. Wish I didn't get rid of 99.05% of all my tech stuff I had. Had a friend that owned a computer shop that I would get shit from for free because it was old or didnt know what it does. Really, he had no I idea on most of the shit, just mostly did Windows OS reinstall, virus removal, and basic hardware upgrades/install. Anything beyond that he would come me in to teach him or do it for him.

A simple ass list because I don't have the time to type it all out and can't remember most of the names/models. I got most of this shit from 08 to 14 for free or bought. I didn't keep all this stuff at one give time. System were coming and going. Some I gave away, parted out, or sold.

There are millions of people out there who look at generic beige '90s clone shit with the same degree of indifference and even disgust as you see "shitty 00s computers", it's just the same old boring shit in a different color, that merely appeals to a different generation.

But it'll be desirable some day anyway, not just because of its age, eventual rarity or design/feature set, but because there will definitely always be someone out there looking to get their shitty Gateway system from their childhood back, or get their hands on the high-end gaming PC/workstation/whatever they always wanted but could never afford, not unlike you and the others who lust after the P4 Optiplexes of yesteryear that were tossed out in droves because everyone thought they were low-rent generic trash.

Hell, I love me some '00s shit, especially while it's cheap and I can get my hands on all of the cool expensive ultraportables, laptops, PDAs and desktops my parents would never buy for me for pocket change. There was about as much cool shit during that era as we had in the '90s and even beyond. It wasn't until just recently that things have really started to slow down as computers have finally matured and become more and more appliance-like.

As far as kits go, I have seen that one, it's pretty cool looking. Personally I've been interested in this 6120-based SBC: http://www.sparetimegizmos.com/Hardware/SBC6120-2.htm

Or even just trying to find a DECmate, probably wouldn't be easy to rig blinkenlights onto either, though.

Try manually freeing it with the drive powered, you might have to move it again after the self test if it gets stuck in the landing zone again.

SBC-6120 is good, there's a respin of them down at retrobrewcomputers.org (the original maker has retired I think)

You'll probably have to make your own blinkenlights board though, unless they've started making new ones by now.

I'd personally go for one of those over a DECmate because they fucked with OS8 compatibility to some degree.

The platters move freely. When I power it on the little arms try to move, but they seem like they are stuck. I tried wriggling then but it doesn't help
>>
>>61390621
Nice. I didn't think the 8 would suck up too much, I guess it's when you've got a ton of stuff running at once that it really starts giving you shit about it.

I'd love myself a simple single-rack setup some day with a disk pack, paper tape and maybe a VT-52 rather than a teletype. They seem pretty damn fun to mess with. Don't hold out too much hope of finding any over here, though, I have a feeling we missed out on the minicomputer age for the most part.

>>
>>61390719

>I guess it's when you've got a ton of stuff running at once that it really starts giving you shit about it.

The only annoyance is that I'm using a step-down transformer, and the inrush current sometimes trips the breaker. Otherwise there's not a lot to worry about, as I've had that, an 11/34, Altair 8800, and 2 XTs running at once. I think they drew about 5-6 amps together?

Idaho, there's actually a shit ton of tech here but it mostly started picking up in the late '70s with Micron and HP, I haven't seen anything going that far back yet.

But then again, there's a few hoarding sites that I've come across or missed out on. I know one guy that's hiding a working PDP-5 and god knows what else in his warehouse, and I keep forgetting to pay him a visit on my days off...

I couldn't imagine trying to fly with that shit though, how did you manage to pack it to take it as checked luggage? Those things look huge.
>>
>>61390952
Keep the platters and make your dick a Saint of the Church of Emacs
>>
>>61390952
I'd keep the platters too, man, they're nice and shiny and easy to display on a desk or something if that's your thing.
>>
>>61391064

Wait, is the Saint Ignucius hat made of an old hard drive platter?
>>
>>61391047

Dunno about Idaho, but you might be able to find a PDP-11 at a CNC shop, university, or hospital?

>I couldn't imagine trying to fly with that shit though, how did you manage to pack it to take it as checked luggage? Those things look huge.

I took the PSU out and put it in a suitcase, put the front panel in my backpack, and screwed a few pieces of pallet wood to the chassis to strengthen it and had it professionally boxed. I think it cost me about $100 to get it back to England, which was a steal compared to having it shipped. (the customs charge alone would've cost at least 4 times that)

I think it weighed about 100lbs (PSU was 45), and is a 6U full length rackmount.
>>
>>61390667
That's neat. I didn't know that about the DECmate, either, is it some firmware fuckup or hardware-related? I'm not even sure where you'd begin to find software to run on one of those, anyway. I think they mostly just ran WPS-8 and that was it.
>>
>>61391384
Damn, I guess it sounds doable though.

As far as finding stuff goes, my university was mostly running IBM systems and cleared out a lot of their stuff (have a few 3278s with the logo burned into them) but CNC shops/hospitals are definitely an option, maybe I'll keep an eye out.

There's also a national laboratory too that might send up surplus from time to time, maybe I'll get lucky some day.

Man, hardly anything I used in NT 4.0 works in 3.51. Not even the D+ Browser, the 7-Zip GUI or Opera 7-10. Opera 6 works, but can't access any website.

Also, the NewShell runonce.exe icon is a barcode covered in blood.

I think the "blood" is the laser from the scanner which is spreading a bit. At least I think that was the intention. It would've been more obvious if it was a line and not "splattered".

However, Far Manager 1.7 and tcc 0.9.26 work just fine.

Can't say I wouldn't still snag one if I could, though. Hell, as long as it can run a compiler or interpreter of some kind I could probably have some fun with one.

Has anyone ever installed a CF card in their retro machines? If so, what's the speed difference compared to the original HDD?
>>
>>61393281
Yes, several, it's nice. Only machines with PATA/IDE controllers though. As CF cards are native ATA.
It can easily max out the transfer speed of the controller if we are talking older machines here.
Most of the speed comes for the instant seek time.
>>
>>61393281

Yep, I run almost all of my machines off CF cards.
I get a marginal improvement when it comes to battery life on my portables and better I/O speeds across the board.
>>
>>61368463
What monitor is that?
>>
>>61393472
>>61393522
Since a CF card functions as an SSD, I'm guessing you have to disable the swap file as well.
>>
>>61393608

You can, but I haven't had any of my CF cards develop faults yet, and I left my swap file on.
>>
>>61393647
How long have you had them installed and how often do you use those machines?
>>
>>61388567
Weren't the build quality on Amstrad's stuff really shit?
>>
>>61393667

3-4 Years, and they get used for a few hours a week.

MS-DOS and Amiga Workbench don't have a swap file so its ideal for those machines, my Win98 laptops obviously do and are still fine.
>>
>>61393708

Yes, and the Sinclair gear took a dive after Amstrash bought them.
>>
>>61358049

No, modern flash memory can be written so many times, it will take seriously long time, like years of constant usage, for it to be a problem.

Unless you are running Workbench 1.0-3.0, then what you are referring to as Amiga Workbench, is actually just a file manager, Intuition being the window manager/desktop environment.
It's AmigaOS that both run on.

What sort of old pc system was that? Becouse here you still have to throw away most everything after the first pentium unless you can sell a complete system. No one wants nor need old shit that can be emulated or run on current systems!

We did sell our old Nintendo real cheap back in the day though and might have lost some money on it, to an family friend that at the time had a broken leg and was confined to bed. He was a beast at the first 3 mario games after that!
>>
>>61394864

>>
>>61395139
Sweden, and to far away from most people to bid more than 30bucks for anything.

>>61395160
Voodoo cards go for less than freight here still. Bet 1000s of those cards went to scrap.
Soundblaster even worse so, everyone wanted Roland cards here!
>>
>>61395384
Voodoo 2's and AWE64's go easily for 70 bucks.
Same with Roland and GUS cards. But those are already 486 territory, we are talking post Pentium as I understood.
>>
>>61395470
70 bucks is at best twice the cost of the advert, add to that the cost of time to contact the buyer and doing said deal.

I would just shuck it into the pile of trash and no bother at all. Enough of all that shit still for entousiasts!

>NT 4.0, 2000 and XP (with the classic theme) are the only comfy versions of Windows

XP was initially received even less favorably than Vista or 8 were, and not because of the fisher price Luna UI.

On release it needed at least 256MB of RAM before it would run in a manner less painful than sounding your own dick with a rusty nail, or 512MB for it to actually be smooth. This was in an era where 64-128MB was the norm in a PC.

Definitely a rarity for XP considering Intel was shoving RDRAM down everyone's throats at the time.
