This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

The hour and minute hands have heavily patina'd radium paint between the metal. Zinc sulfide, the base material that does the glowing in radioactive paint, has a distinct change of color that goes to orange-brown with enough time.

It's definitely radioactive.

My prime day purchase. Not bad value, it'll hold me over until I decide I want a speedmaster.
Some fun history, when the Americans were planning for their moon mission, Bulova and Omega were competing for standard adoption of their watches from the Astronauts. While Omega won and became widely known for the moon watch, another one of the astronauts decided he liked the American branded Bulova better. He proceeded to wear the Bulova on the moon to little public recognition. This watch is the limited edition recreation of the Bulova moon watch, built to NASA's specs, hence the similar features to the Speedmaster. It has an ultra high frequency quartz movement, rated at <10s /year variation, a raised AR coated sapphire crystal, and a nice solid link, and solid end link bracelet. All in all, I'm happy. Plus it came in a nice ass wooden box.

Depends on the watch and how much sunlight you give it. When I go camping my SKX lasts easily all through the night until morning, but Seiko divers are known for having some of the best lume anywhere. Some of my other watches would definitely not last that long.

Not perfectly smoothly like the regular Precisionist movements, but 2 or 3 times per second. The chronograph sweeps the entire time.
>>
>>61357914
I have a watch with the same movement, running seconds ticks at 2 Hz, chrono seconds are 8 times a second
>>
What do we think of the SRPA27K1 for a daily beater?
>>
>>61358018
Out of curiosity, how long did a battery last in this movement for you?
>>
>>61357889
You'll be so lucky to get <10s per year
>>
>>61358348
Well I have tested my Bulova Accutron II with the UHF movement and 16 Hz secund hands by syncing it up to one of my atomic citizen watches promptly after the citizen finished syncing with the atomic time. Now we're about 5 months with >3 seconds of variation, so I'm quite happy with that.
>>
>>61358087
I've only had mine about 8 months, so I don't know yet. I would presume with the small hand ticking twice a second only it would have significantly longer life than a regular accutron II as long as you don't go nuts on the chrono.

Its actually required to be on the watch as part of the mil spec it has to meet. This is one of the reasons I find the watch interesting to begin with. it is also Iso certified has an sw200 movement tritium tubes and saphire crystal. It is around 650 dollar however . Curious to know if there are other watches you would purchase over this at that price excluding Seikos.

Every asshole has one, but I suppose it's popular for a reason. I just find it incredibly boring looking. If I wanted a black dialed rolex it'd be an 114270.

>>
>>61362225
The minute markings on the bezel stop at 15. The cyclops is ugly.
>>
>>61362225
There is no 116410. I'm guessing that one in the photo is an early 14060 based on the tritium lume and two-line dial, is that what you mean? The 14060 is the last great classic Sub, it's the one I would pick if I wanted a Sub. It has modern features like a sapphire crystal and 3000 or 3130 movement, but the drilled lugs and aluminum bezel. It's cheap and common and elegant while also being the last Sub that you can really call a tool watch. It's the size and shape that God intended the Submariner to be, not the overgrown bloated maxi case modern Sub. And there's no ugly date on it.

Grandfather left me his 40 year old watch (Seiko). It was losing more than 2 min. a day so I had it checked. The shop said it needed a new balance wheel and the crystal needs to be replaced (duh).

Overall service cost is $40. Will it give reliable enough time after that though?
>>
>>61364080
The explorer is beautiful. the skx is dog shit. My Rolex is up my ass with the rest of my money.
>>
>>61364374
$40 to replace the balance wheel and crystal seems suspiciously low. Does that actually include servicing the movement or was that just the cost of parts?
>>
>>61364399
Just the parts though I know they get original parts. It's not an upscale shop but it was reasonably busy.

Are there technical reasons as to why a watch should be larger than 42mm?

>>61364862
This JLC movement has been around since 1929 and as far as I know it's still the smallest mechanical movement ever, and it's still in production. Watches are big because big watches are in fashion, of course there are movements small enough to fit in 36mm watches. 36mm was a standard size for men's watches for decades, and women's watches are commonly well below 20mm.

The ETA 2824 is 25.6mm diameter and 5mm thick, the 2892 is 3.6mm thick. Those both obviously fit in a 36mm case with plenty of room to spare. Using a big watch would maybe let you use a bigger balance wheel and bigger mainspring and bigger winding rotor for more accurate timekeeping and longer power reserve, but most manufacturers making dogshit 50mm abominations are just sticking a 2824 in there anyway.
>>

For a standard 3 hander (+day/date), no. For things like grand complications or stuffing multiple barrels in a movement, sometimes.

Had to fit a replacement crystal and because it's not quite a perfect fit I also glued it down for security.

Next, I sourced a proper seconds hand compared to the one it came with. Although, this seconds hand has a shorter stem than the originals requiring swapping the hour and minute pinions for shorter ones so that this seconds hand can reach its own pinion.

Hey /wt/, my parents are pleased with how well I did at uni this year and offered to buy me a watch.
Budget is around 500 bucks, criteria are:
>pretty
>~42mm
>at least 20ATM water resistance
Right now I'm strongly looking at pic related and I'm most likely gonna get that but I thought if there's a nicer watch that fits those criteria it'd be a shame to miss out on it, so do you guys think that money would be better spent on something else or nah?

Acrylic (basically plexiglass) was the most common a long time ago but is rarely used in new watches. It's very soft and basically impossible to shatter. It gets covered in scratches over time but it's very easy to polish them out by hand with some paste or even just toothpaste. They're usually very thick and domed which is a classic look associated with old watches.

Mineral crystals are regular glass. They're probably the most common type on cheap watches. They are moderately scratch resistant and moderately shatter resistant. They'll probably eventually get scratched a bit and if they do you can't really polish them out. Seiko uses the brand name Hardlex instead of calling it mineral glass, some Hardlex is quite a bit harder than plain mineral crystals but not as hard as sapphire. Other Hardlex is just regular glass dressed up with a fancy name.

Sapphire crystals are literally synthetic colorless sapphires. They're extremely hard and you probably won't scratch one unless you're really careless, but an impact at the wrong angle will shatter the crystal into a million very small sharp pieces. They tend to have lots of glare so some manufacturers may put anti-reflective coatings on the inside or outside surface or both. If there's coatings on the outside they tend to be easy to scratch up, though, which I think kind of defeats the purpose of using a sapphire.

>>
>>61371267
I see no problem with that. If it's his money, and the watch excites him, do it. The snobbery of other people's decisions is unreal. It's one thing to point out that the movement costs 10~20 bucks or whatever, and point out that the value may not be there. But as long as they know before purchasing it, who cares, it's his money.

So there are fliegers, there are field watches for infantry, there are dive watches for military divers, but are there specific watches for tankers?

I believe the tank Komandirskie wasn't a specific armor crewman's watch, just another military-themed watch used in the Soviet Army.

He saved me from getting an Oris and instead I bit the bullet and got an Explorer II instead. He's obviously not super smart and he's very eccentric with a pretty JUSTed life with fucked up priorities, but his opinions on watches are spot on.

It's strange but he's actually the best horology channel on youtube. If you get past the filler videos and find the ones where he actually puts effort in he gives solid advice and he actually speaks from experience as a poorfag who really, really likes high end timepieces. Everyone else is either an outright shill, spending daddy's money, are terrified of pissing people off so they never say anything bad about different brands, or otherwise have such a small number of watched that they've owned that they can't really tell you a whole lot.

When you're in a hobby where you can spend thousands on a single timepiece, it's critical that the person you're getting advice from gives you his honest opinion. I mean Archie made like 5 videos before the election screaming at his viewers to go to the polls and vote for "the Trumpster" because "Hilluhry Clinton is a viscous, lesbian cunt". Meanwhile I know fucking GUN channels that were too chickenshit to take a side on something that pertains to them, and yet an unemployed Australian watch reviewer would.

Same, I only learned of ChinkNault maybe a week ago and did some googling, apparently their worse than the usual microbrand, and their marketing was ridiculous and they eventually deleted some lines like "searching for the best lume material from Alaska to Peru" or something along those lines.

Their Q & A is obviously chink English and still they maintain that their watches are made in the US. It's ridiculous, but it's the result when watch marketing is based 80% on "heritage".

I know this will trigger the anti-Seiko autist, but this is why I love that company instead of pretentious shitty marketing they just churn out good watches (obviously there are a lot of horrible ones too, but none are insanely overpriced)

Actually nobody has accused my watch of being fake besides shitposters on here, but what I am getting tired of is people spotting my Rolex and pulling me aside to tell me about how they too are also supreme gentlemen watch connoisseurs and then showing me their TAG or Stuhrling or some shit.

Decided to give this Casio some water tests thinking it would break. Survived bathtime and showering. Even when pressing all the buttons underwater and when under the running water.

This.

You buy a mechanical watch for emotional reasons (old-world mechanics, heritage, ...), so cheaping out and buying mass-produced shit with virtually zero QC makes little sense.

Exactly. I don't get it everyone loves the skx's but half of them don't even have aligned bezels... and they come with the 7s26 which is the cheapest non chinese movement you can even buy. No hacking no hand winding... They don't even look good.

Well there's plans online to 3d print or build a clock. A wooden clock is very doable. Certainly a pendulum is easier than a balance wheel, and suspended weight is easier than a mainspring.

So a torsion pendulum then. Doable but harder. You could always buy a 400-day or anniversary clock and start messing with it if you've never been inside them before.

Cheap Seikos are probably the ideal starter watches though: best finishing by far in the price range, technically "in-house", good brand heritage, ...

Just enough to whet one's appetite for the next tier up.

The Omega Seamaster 300 vs the speedmaster pro.

The seamaster has the better movement, but a less iconic design (although it is kind of iconic in its own right, being based on a 60s seamaster).
>>
>>61376103
I want to add that I don't like Omega the brand these days.

But I do like these two particular watches. And I can get the seamaster for an absolute steal (speedmaster is still a little cheaper).
>>
>>61375134
> He's rich, I'm not.

You can pickup vintage Rolex gold bracelet date justs for as low as $3500. They are incredibly common.

>cuck-axial

>>
>>61376226
Ceramic rotor bearings, silicon balance spring, twin-barrel 60hr power reserve, dat finish, regulated to turbo-COSC spec, full balance bridge, ...

And I don't really see any reason why the coaxial thing wouldn't at least work as well and last as long as a regular pallet fork.
I think a lot of the bad press floating around refers to the old coaxial movements, which were just ETAs with coaxial pallet forks slapped on.
Could be wrong of course.
>>
>>61376214
>They are incredibly gay.
They sure are.
>>
>>61376103
choose between an oversized vintage rehash with faux old lume, or a classic design that everyone knows and has. both with shitty omega case finishing
>>
>>61376451
I did say up front that the speedmaster had the better/more iconic design.

But I do like the design of that seamaster. And the color of the lume.
Nobody said lume has to be stark white. Way I see it, it's not "faux" anything, it's just off-white lume.

>Patek Philippe 5196 Calatrava

I don't give a fuck if this was first found inside a rare dragon egg, nothing justifies the 18k+ price on this thing that looks like every other dress watch in existence. There is literally nothing visually interesting or different about this watch. The price is for the backstory and name alone, and no backstory is worth that fucking much for a god damn watch that looks that fucking boring. /rant

It might be worth it if the movement was hand-finished, but judging by the chatter in the anglage, that's not the fucking case.

Sure that's part of it but you're also paying for the in-house precious metal movement and case along with all the by-hand finishing and the fact the Calatrava is *the* classic dress watch. Patek is called the Rolls Royce of watches for a reason.

Though I will admit the new limited edition pilot edition in steel is rather steep at $21500.

Don't buy one then, I guess.

I would probably never drop that much cash on one, but then if someone handed me a Calatrava or a Patrimony I certainly wouldn't complain, either. I can appreciate taking a simple idea and just overdoing it to absolute perfection without having to add a bunch of bells and whistles to it.
>>
>>61377004
I'm fairly sure all Patek's are hand finished but most don't have display casebacks for some reason.
>>
>>61377115
I mean it depends on your means. If you are very wealthy and want a classy dress watch form pp, vc, jlc, or ap you are paying 15-20k period.

>>61377176
There is a picture floating around of a pp movement that looks like garbage.. I really don't know what watch its from or if its a normal occurrence but i do know the display back models are finished to a crazy high standard.
>>
>>61376541
Compared with other brands in the price range, they sure do.
>>
>>61373506
You do sound like a pretentious cunt. If none of them said their watches were on the same level as yours and really triggered you, get fucked for being the kind of person who gives watch enthusiasts a bad name. It's a pretty niche hobby as it is. You don't need to turn away people who want to chat. Just respectfully give sound advice and justification for your opinions.

>>
>>61377674

Well the original Royal Oak is/was a great watch but ever since most of AP's profits started to come from it they've created so many new & ugly variants it's devalued the appeal of the original. Even the guy who designed it hated the Offshores.

There is a difference between having watches on the same level and having watches at the same price point. There are very few TAGs worth owning, and the people described above wouldn't be wearing them. There are no Stuhrlings worth owning. There are respectable watches at almost every price point.
