If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
Buying used is perfectly fine for budgets (PSU excluded)

Any suggestions on a GPU or a different meme case? Plan on picking up an 850 evo for boot+ a few programs/games and another 2TB i have laying around.

Also if I go with a 1050TI should I just drop the 1600 to a 1400 so save some more bucks or is it that much better?

Suggestions on non meme ram would be nice as well, i'm open to 4x4x2 as this mobo has 4 slots as well.

I basically just want solid frames at 1080P and hitting high or above in games like Squad.

I have a mouse and keyboard already but am open to suggestions on a decent monitor as well in the $100 range.
>>

I've seen some mini-ATX with integrated CPU recently, but they usually don't come with RAM so unless you got some RAM modules lying around, maybe you could try running your NAS from a cheap Android tablet, or a Raspberry Pi if you have the time and will to configure one. Personally I wanted to try both, I got an unused tablet and an Orange Pi but I never find the time to tinker with them.

I have a 970 and want to upgrade my processor. I was looking at the i5-7500 since it's only $200, kabylake, and seems to rank well on various websites. I'm not interested in over clocking. Does this seem like a good choice?

Hi, I'm need a PC for rendering my architecture projects.
My budget is around $1k, I made a list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ps6dQV

Also, I have an option to buy used
i5 2500k (3.3Ghz), Ram- 8gb, V\c r9 270 2gb, HDD - 1Tb for ~$400
Help me out, /g/

>>
>>61333726
God people doing budget builds gets my dick so hard. There's no fun in being l like "Oh wow yup those are all the highest end components so it can do all the things", there's fun in being like "Oh cool, a Pentium and a 1050Ti? What games is that able to run and at what settings? How much did you pay for that? What kind of case are you keeping such a cute little machine inside?
>>
>>61332135
What's the best performing CPU for single threaded applications? 2 or 4 cores would be fine more than that is pointless as 90% of the computational work done by my FEA package is sequential and therefore single threaded. It will probably be paired to a mid range Maxwel based Quadro and I'm looking to keep the buget under £750 for CPU/MB&RAM.
>>
>>61334927
The first and most immediate issue I see with buying a 2500k is unless you have a motherboard already buying a motheboard by itself is usually expensive as fuck given that it's an older CPU.

>>61334927
Get faster ram for Ryzen, 3000 or 3200 mhz. It makes a huge difference in performance. Beyond that, looks good.

The i5 2500k would only be good if you plan to use it as a separate PC for gaming. An old i5 would not be good for your workload.
>>
>>61335038
Yeah, it's the whole package. meaning, it is a used PC. So, is ryzen 1600 that much better than i5 2500k?

Oh, ok, thanks! I'll do that!

>>
>>61335034
Either a overclocked i3-7350K or stock 7700k would provide the best of the best single threaded performance
Other than that and you're getting lower frequency locked CPU which won't perform as well. Try to search for sales for the 7350k, maybe there's some left around.
You could also go for used or older hardware but it's a pain in the ass to get something good so it's up to you.

>>
>>61335675
AMD doesn't have the best single core performance. They're 9% worse than intel at it.But they have the best multi-core performance for the price, so it is worth a look. The best CPU value at the moment is the AMD Ryzen 5 1600, which competes with the Intel Core i5 7600 on price despite having more cores than the i5 and 3 times as many threads. performance-wise, the R5 1600 is closer to the Intel Core i7 7700k than it is to the Core i5 line up. keep in mine that i7 is $100 more expensive than the 1600.
If performance per dollar matters to you, AMD is king.

Got Windows Installing now on a real budget build that's gonna end up being a FreeNAS box. Asrock B250 and a Pentium 3.3ghz to go with it. Got 4 fairly used 6tb WD blue drives for free from my friend who does security work. This is more so a test run before I spend mine on better hardware and new NAS hard drives. Wanna just use it as a NAS/Media sever and if it works the way I think it will the B250 will be moved to my mountain house as a HTPC and i'll buy a SuperMircro board and new hardrives.

Only running windows right now to run some benchmarks just for fun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKHsMar1Jo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6Ovmxfejvo
https://youtu.be/JypkqwpOtNI?t=8m
Plenty of futureproofing from both the fact that the CPU is 6 cores (has a lot of room left while playing current games so won't have any problem playing future ones) and that the hard drive is 2TB (also cheaper which is pretty weird, materiel.net shouldn't price this hard drive so high when it costs half, maybe you picked an entreprise model?), no need to overclock at the time being but always can if you feel the need to (so you can drop the cooler and buy one in a few years). PSU is of slightly better quality although similar pricing, efficiency and wattage.
As for the RAM, the reason it's priced so high (both the one you and i picked) is because it's Samsung B-DIE that has quite an easier time reaching high frequencies because of the quality. It's not really needed though, so you could save some 30 - 35€ by going for other kits and you'll most likely hit close or even identical speeds.

I was going to upgrade my CPU but looking at my mobo I realised there wasnt much I could upgrade with it so realised I had to upgrade that too. Problem is I'm inept at finding out what a decent mobo is. I plan on keeping the GPU and RAM (if I can) and PSU is a G550M. I inly realy use the one Pcie so lots of slots is not needed.

>Load

What kind of shitty load is this?
61°C while being fucking stressed? Even my R7 1700 at 3.7GHz hits 65 - 66°C on a D15S during video encoding, and it's fucking soldered instead of having cum under the hood.
But exactly as i said, there is very little difference between the coolers. Now if there was a proper load on it instead of just running some garbage Prime95 with default "stress" test (Blend) or whatever shit they use that doesn't make the CPU do any work then of course it'd heat a fuckton more and the difference between the D14 SE and the 212 evo would be much, much bigger (and what it should be). Do you really believe there is only a mere 6/7°C difference between an NH-D14 SE and a 212 EVO at full load? If so you are very much braindead, those coolers have extremely different dissipating capacity. The fact that you're able to post this picture without realising that shows how ignorant you are.
With every post you send you make yourself look like a retard even more. I wonder how retarded the next one will be.

The LinX test does generate higher temps, but not by much (10 degrees at most). Video encoding is lighter than those stress tests, at least on Intel chips.

Looking to build a PC for my gf. I'd like something small (micro or mini ATX?). Her only considerations are that the case is colorful and she can play WoW and other games on it. She likes stuff like Mass Effect and would like to be able to play newer games at a decent 30-60fps on medium-high settings.

I'm giving her my old GTX670 2Gb so no GPU needed for this build.

I priced this out on newegg and then put it through pc partpicker. Not really sure if there are any glaring issues with it.

Am I overbuilding here? $500 seems expensive for her needs but maybe I just don't know shit about computers.

Also, I have I think two copies of Windows 10, one on my laptop and another on my desktop. Any way I can just use one of these for her PC and not have to buy another copy of the botnet?

Anon please. GPU is the most important components of gaming PC, don't skimp on it. Toss that 670 into a bin, that's where it belongs.

Also read the sticky: either downgrade to g4560 (recommended) or switch to ryzen 5 instead. With ryzen you'd get a decent cooler too so no need to buy that seperately.

Could save a few bucks by picking a cheaper SSD too.

>Also, I have I think two copies of Windows 10, one on my laptop and another on my desktop. Any way I can just use one of these for her PC and not have to buy another copy of the botnet?
They are most likely OEM licenses, so you can't directly install them on another PC. You could do a microsoft account and register the license to it, but then your gf would have to keep herself logged in with that botnet account.

As for the GTX 670 it is definitely showing its age but runs modern games on high settings at 30-60fps when connected to an i5 3570k and 16gb of ramz. Should work ok for her, but I'm definitely ready to move on to higher resolutions and framerates.

i7 960 or something like that, but only if it's very cheap. You can overclock nicely on this platform.

drop the cooler. The Pentium comes with the same cooler as the i5, but since it's a locked pentium, it cools it just fine. no need for an aftermarket cooler.
And at least grab a 1 TB HDD
And change that case. I like how DIYPC cases look too but they aren't well built. Grab a different one. like a legit mATX case. That case there still supports full size ATX motherboards.

For my hdd? And then rip out the hdd cage? Only so much is easily removed. I was hoping to bring cool air in the top as well for the cpu.

>>61340277

I wasn't aware of that. So it's 'locked" meaning (i assume) it cannot be overclocked?

This is my first time building a PC so I had no idea that CPUs come with coolers. kek.
>>
>>61340363
>So it's 'locked" meaning (i assume) it cannot be overclocked?
correct. With Intel, only CPUs ending in a K or an X are overcockable.
Pretty much all AMD processors are overclockable though. All the Ryzen and FX chips are unlocked.
>>
>>61339981
You don't need a 620W PSU for that build including GTX 670. You could manage with 450W-550W
>>
>>61334256
I would go 16gb honestly. 8gb is barely enough and can cause stuttering bullshit in some games even at 1920x1080.
>>
>>61334747
No the Armor has an inadequate cooler for the 1080/Ti. It happens to have the same PCB as the gaming X but a shit cooler. You could replace it, of course, but if you can just get one with a better cooler like the ROG Strix or Aorus or SC2/FTW3 then you should
>>
How well does a Ryzen 5 1600x play with 1080ti? 1080p (Yes memes) and 1440p in the future for me, so I realize the CPU will perform better in 1440p

I'd buy an aftermarket liquid cooler regardless, but I heard the 1600 both clocks better and comes with a stock cooler
And excuse me for sounding retarded for a moment here, but is the 1600x overclocked already? I have an i5 4670k and that overclocks easy peasy through reboots, it basically has built in overclocking options
For 1600x do I need to adjust the voltages or anything manually or is it easy peasy overclock on bootup selectable as well?
>>
>>61340330
You connect them the same way you connect the start button to the mother board.
>>
>>61340493
>1080ti
madman
>>
>>61340493
The x is the same chip but better binned so runs at higher clock by default. It's the same as how Intel's ranks work.
>>
>>61340493
If you're going with a liquid cooler and all that then you should just get the 1700/1700X. At that point you've already put a lot of money into cooling that is somewhat wasted on the 1600X--not entirely but enough that you can easily justify bumping up to the 1700/1700X.

Yes the "X" models are clocked higher but according to reports they are binned a bit better but obviously there is still plenty of uncertainty in OCing anyway. You may have to adjust voltages and whatnot depending on how high you're going but so far we haven't seen much difference in OC potential between Ryzen types (3/5/7). It can OC on boot like any other CPU as it is set in your BIOS.

And Ryzen plays just fine with a 1080 Ti so no worries there.
>>
Which 16 Gb (16 is enough, right?) will get me the best chances of hitting 3200 with Ryzen? G.Skill Flare, since they're "made for Ryzen"? I know Tridents have that B-die too, and they look better IMO, but some people report having problems with those.
>>
>>61340606
Ah great, 3.6 is solid for a 6 core. Would you happen to know how overclocking is on this one? 4670k made it as easy as just selecting the option on bootup

Something like:

>32 core EPYC

and then I'm fine for the next 10 years again. My current desktop is from 2006...
>>
>>61340665
If you win the silicon lottery, you can get to 4.0/4.1 Ghz. otherwise, it'll max around 3.9
Ryzen chips aren't all that good at overclocking. And they're voltage limited, not temp limited like Intel.
>>

I have had nvidia gpu and AMD mobo and cpu for over a year now and have had no problems.

I appreciate the response, thank you very much. Alleviated a lot of my fears with this post

I was looking at the 1700x as well but I'm not sure if I can justify that many cores, 6 is fine for my main concern being gaming and the single core ghz .2 drop from 8 to 6 concerns me
>>
>>61340655
What board do you have? After the latest AGESA update I've found it much easier to hit higher frequencies. So I think you should be ok with the Tridents but it's best to check with your board QVL or even an enthusiast forum.
>>
>>61340708
The differences between the 1600 and 1700 in gaming are minimal, if they can be found at all.

Unless you are compiling shit or rendering, I would say stick with the 1600. If a couple of years from now more cores starts to matter, the AM4 socket will still allow you to throw in a newer CPU with more cores then.
It's a better plan than purchasing the cores now and have them be useless/near useless for the foreseeable future.

2 additional cores are not useless, even just multitasking in Windows/Linux will ramp up multiple cores easily unless they are parked. My main workstation at work is a 12-core Xeon machine and going home to my 6-core Intel is really quite noticeable and I don't even game on the Xeon.
>>
>>61340732
I was aiming for MSI B350 Tomahawk. It does have Tridents on QVL, the weird thing is, it doesn't have made-for-Ryzen Flares (F4-3200C14D-16GFX) there, for some reason. I guess I'll go with Tridents and update my BIOS and hope I don't get hit by a power outage while it's updating.
>>
When do you want to overclock your CPU?
>>
>>61340809
It's just being silent
>>
>>61340830
>even just multitasking
The differences in general desktop "multitasking" (whatever that use case means) is even smaller. In that scenario RAM and storage bottlenecks usually mean more than another 2 CPU cores.

Not that it matters anyway. He wants to do gaming, not "multitasking", "megatasking", or whatever you'd prefer. Benefits of R7 over R5 are minimal and often nonexistent today. Bad buy in 2017.
By the time those threads matter, newer CPUs with more IPC and faster clocks will have been developed. No point in making an investment now when he can upgrade in 2-4 years and have better performance.
>>
>>61340870
The original point of overclocking was to get a cheap CPU to perform as well as a faster, more expensive CPU. It was popular originally in the 90s with Intel Celerons since you could make them perform like much more expensive Pentiums.

But those days are long gone since Intel locks most of their CPUs and you pay a premium to be able to overclock now (likely because being able to overclock on cheaper CPUs cut into their profits since people weren't buying the more expensive CPUs). But AMD offers overclocking on all the FX and Ryzen chips. You can make a R5 1400 perform like a 1500X, a 1600 perform like a 1600X, or a 1700 perform like an 1800X since they overclock.
>>
>>61340945
Thanks man.

At the moment I'm interested in an AMD R5 1600
Say I was only interested in gaming on my new computer, how much would it differ, perfomancewise if I chose to overclock that CPU?

totally up to you. The i5 will have better single-threaded performance and better IPC, which is what most game use at the moment, though more are switching to multi-threaded workloads. If you do productivity stuff, keep the 8350. Otherwise, the i5 isn't a bad swap.

My 9 year old pc just died, and I'm really confused as to what kind of cpu and gpu i want to get. I want it to be as futureproof as possible. I'm torn between Ryzen 7 and i7. I'm reading around google and there have been some (few months old)reports of bugs with the ryzens but i'm not sure if they still hold?

Also even though I know how to build the pc I'm not very up to date as to what is good and what is not - any hints on what i should focus on?

Here's what i'm thinking about
cpu: Ryzen 7 1700 or i7-7700
gpu: nvidia 1060(does brand matter?)
mobo: does it matter as long as it's the correct socket?

Not bad. I would look out for buying that exact same RAM again in the future in case she's short on RAM (install HWiNFO64 on her PC and after she's done for the day check the RAM usage there, you'll know whether she needs more 16GB or not).

If the GPU you're lending her doesn't suffice investing into a 1050 Ti or 1060 6GB could be good. The 1050 Ti is a pretty good card for its price and is enough to play anything you want, albeit not in full ultra for GPU-bound games. 1060 6GB does everything you want @1080 but nowadays it's overpriced (wouldn't pay more than 200 for it).
In the future, if she needs a better CPU, you can upgrade her Pentium G with an i7-7700 non-K for this board, but keep in mind that it's not worth the 300 dollars it's usually at, here again, I wouldn't pay more than 200 or so for an i7-7700.
