If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - 144hz only
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
Buying used is perfectly fine for budgets (PSU excluded)

I want to build a PC for basic web browsing 1080p video and libreboot.
My Budget is roughly 200$ But I allready have many parts.
Parts I have:
Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L motherboard
4GB of ram (2gb x2)
Core 2 quad Q660
Optical drive
250GB HDD

What I need:
Power supply
Case
Graphics card ( This card must work with no propietary drivers what so ever and must also work with libreboot No binary blobs either)

Country: USA
What do you guys reccomend?
>>
So we are throwing out a lot of hardware of systems that we do not wish to support anymore at work and I can have 32 GB of DDR4 SO-DIMM 3200 (2 x 16 GB) which I could put into my thinkpad t460p for just 80 $

I probably won't need 32 GB Ram in my entire life (>inb4 640k are enough) but it's just 80 $.

Is there -any- benefit that I could talk myself into in order to justify the purchase to myself, other than being the hero of screenfetch threads?

I've got a i5 3570k overclocked at 4.3ghz

Is a 980ti a decent enough upgrade from the R290 to run VRshit at a more stable 90fps or would I need a CPU upgrade as well?
>>

>>
>>61323395

How will an R5 1600 and RX580/GTX 1070 pair for 1080p gaming? What about somewhat heavy video editing and other productivity? I have access to both GPUs with about $90 of a price gap between them; which would be a better buy for that CPU? Lastly, does anyone have any recent benchmarks for a R5 1600 in Arma 3?

Unlike EVGA, Seasonic doesn't make bad PSUs. Even their cheapest offerings are at least "good".
Just because brainless sheep can't recommend anything beyond Seasonic, EVGA, or Corsair units, doesn't mean you need to limit yourself to those offerings (not that it means that buy is the wrong choice).

PSUs cables and rails are rated for specific tolerances based on the connections provided.
Anything you cook up outside of that is on you. It's not recommended. Will it explode? Probably not.

Slightly updated first time build. Can anyone give some insight on the video card (Asus GTX 1060 6GB)? What are its limits? I mainly play rocket league, LoL, and some platformers but I want to play more open world games like GTA and Hitman. Also i know DDR4 is the standard but how does GDDR5 fair?

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZN3B3F

Probably because *90 cards for Nvidia are dual die cards.

Outdated PSU. Can get better for same price.
For the money you are spending, pick either tier 1-2.

DDR4 is system, GDDR5 is GPU-only.

In practical terms yes - it is effectively two complete gpus bolted onto a single pcb.

Pic related, an dual die AMD card.
>>
>>61324370
Not quite SLI, it's a single card with 2 GPUs on it.
>>
>>61324439

>>

It is SLI, you can't run a 590/690/Titan Z without having an SLI-certified PCIe slot on your motherboard

>you can't run a 590/690/Titan Z without having an SLI-certified PCIe slot on your motherboard

To be pedantic you can run them - they will just run effectively as a single die.

>they will just run effectively as a single die.
That would be bad. How do I see if my mobo's 16x PCIe slot supports dual GPU?
>>
>>61324498

Historically dual due cards have been downclocked compared to their single die counterparts (i.e each die of a 690 comes clocked lower than a 680) to help with power draw but they are all generally nuclear reactors. Hell this is why AMD started selling their dual die cards (295x2 and radeon pro duo) with an AIO because you simply can't air cool two thirsty dies and the required vrms.

>>61324523

RTFM and see if it is sli and/or crossfire certified (they have different requirements for certification).

Im in a predicament /pcbg/, I am building a new computer and I ordered a GTX 1070 and i5 7600k, along with 8gb of ram and mobo,
sadly the GTX 1070 probably wont come in for another month or so, I'm wondering if the performance of the integrated graphics of the i5 would be better or worse than my GT640 (very outdated I know)

I was really just thinking Overwatch might be a problem, but if anyone has a comparison site or anything please direct me to the right place.

The igpu ous quite good for what it is but OW would be surely an issue. It can run D3 and Wow perfectly but struggles with SC2 and HOTS, so you need a discrete gpu.

>>
>>61324992
Cool. I like the MSI selection of B350s more. Let's hope mine won't die on me.
>>
>>61324929

There are no unique features to other GTX cards. The Ti models are just generally a supercharged card of a given tier. The 660ti for example was fucking fast for being a mid tier card whereas the 780, 980 and 1080ti cards have been titan beaten performance.

As for GT vs GTX the answer is simple: GT cards aren't for vidya and generally just media boxes. Really low tier cards like this have basically been replaced by Intel's igpu and the upcoming APUs from AMD will continue this trend.

AMD doesn't tend to have any particular moniker for their top tier cards beyond an X in the name since the great renaming (i.e 290x and fury x).

Already have a SSD for the OS.
I'm looking to put games on an SSD because 500gb would be enough with plenty of headroom, I have space in the case for another SSD, and then I'd only keep the less frequently accessed media on HDDs (documents, music, movies, downloads, archives, backups, etc). That would mean that the HDDs would need to spin up that much less often.

Reliability is a priority over the 10mb/sec speed differences. I don't want it to kick the bucket after a year because, I dunno, the firmware has a bug or something.

From what I remember Intel is better in that regard, but they have been outsourcing their SSDs since the last time I checked.

I'm looking to do an all white build but I'm stuck on trying to find a nice case. All these white cases have black interiors which entirely defeats the purpose of a white case. I was considering the white R5 but I already have an R4 for my old rig and want to get something different. The S340 Elite has that black frame around the glass which I don't like. The Enthoo Luxe is too big. Is there no good white mid tower case with tempered glass in the market?

Another question about the RAM. How likely am I to hit 3000mhz with this kit?

For storage I'm just adding on to what I will transfer over from my old rig. And for a CPU cooler I'm looking for an Icekimo 240w.

The quest for hitting dem 3200MHZ on Ryzen never ends.
>Ryzen 5 1600

>Corsair Vengeance LED 2x16GB (CMU16GX4M2C3200C16)

>apply latest BIOS update with AGESA 1.0.0.6 and A-XMP Profile (at 3200 MHz)
>get three long(?) beeps from mobo speaker but PC boots fine
>run Memtest64 to test stability, goal was three hours
>PC shuts down after not even 40 minutes
>do a cold boot, the system tries to POST five times to no avail (three long beeps on each attempt)

Alright, now that I snagged my graphics card and motherboard before they stocked out, I have some questions:

Ryzen 1600 or 1600x? I have never overclocked anything before despite this being my 3rd computer, but i might try it in the future since this isn't a duper budget build like the last ones

Will the 450w PSU be enough, or should I get a bigger one?

Is the SanDisk ssd failure rate really that high? I know it's not seagate or kingston but I hear bad things about it. Hitachi is my favorite brand, but I'll probably go Samsung.

AMD and Nvidia don't really benefit since they sell GPU's at the same price regardless and it doesn't increase "gaming" marketshare. AMD might sell a lot of cards but that doesn't increase the number of AMD users on Steam survey or on benchmark submissions so any marketshare increase isn't visible. The main benefactors are AIB's to some extent, but mostly reselllers/retail and scalpers.

1080p 60hz gaming?
Realistically you probably won't get enough use out of the extra 2 cores from the 1700 for gaming. The majority of games aren't even designed to use 6 cores because likely <10% of their marketshare has anything more than a 4core. Also more cores = more power = your room gets warmer.
Unless you want to start streaming on twitch, or doing some video editting or whatever else I'd just go with the 1600.

What's the best (white) motherboard and RAM combo for a 1700? I'd like to hit 3200mhz on the RAM, preferably with a B350 mobo with decent VRMs because I'm not gonna SLI.
>>
>>61329758
Ryzen 1700 is on sale for $269
>>
>>61330005
there's a white MSI B350
>>
>>61330019
Would it be worth it to buy it? I saw the 1700X is $299. Would that be even better, or just get the 1700?
>>
>>61330178
1700, 1700x and 1800x are all basically identical once overclocked.

Technically, the 1700x and 1800x are "binned" to a higher standard, meaning you might be able to reach higher overclocks at lower voltage, but that's not always the case in the real world.

In practice, as long as you overclock, the three chips are essentially identical and the 1700 represents the best value, plus it comes with a free cooler.
>>
>>61330178
Honestly I would go with the 1700x if you intend to OC and have a decent cooler already
>>
>>61330266
>>61330019
Is there any actual difference between the 1700 and the 1700x aside from the 1700 coming with a free cooler? And being cheaper?
>>

What about if somebody's not wanting to overclock?
>>
>>61330407
Then buy the 1600. X just means the chip runs cooler
>>
>>61330407
If you don't want to touch the BIOS settings at all get the 1700X. The 1800X is like $100 more for a 200MHz higher base clock, it's not worth it.
>>
>>61330407
Just overclock. Honestly, not saying it as a cop-out answer, but it's EXTREMELY easy and takes maybe 10 minutes of research to do effectively.

Literally type in "(your motherboard company) 1700 Overclock" in youtube and a guy will break it down step by step in the same BIOS interface you'll be using. For a basic overclock, it's as simple as changing the number "3.0" to "3.7." Takes maybe 15 seconds.

To get higher than 3.7, you simply up the voltage slightly. If the voltage was too high and your computer won't boot, put it back down a decimal point. Repeat until it boots and stays stable.
>>
>>61330435
>>61330462
Thank you both for your help.
>>
>>61330589
Would changing it from 3.0 to 3.7 cause the voltage to increase enough that a temperature change would be noticeable? I just don't want to fry anything by accident because I'm new to PC building. This'll be my first one.

Everything posts and works fine. Thing is, the voltage is wayyy off, its about 1.44, give about 0.11 if stresstesting. Anyone have any advice?
>>
>>61330701
Nice. I'm going to build a very similar PC, though with a weaker GPU for now and an MSI B350 motherboard.
>>
>>61330677
Going from 3.0 to 3.7 won't affect the voltage by default. It will simply affect the clock speed. As long as you have a decent cooler (the cooler that comes with the 1700 is more than sufficient), then it won't be a problem and the performance gains will be big. Voltage is a separate multiplier and only needs to be messed with for extreme overclocks. You also can't fry your system by overclocking. That hasn't been possible since over a decade ago. If somehow you manage to mess something up, the system will simply shut down to prevent damage well before any actual damage can be done.

1700x doesn't come with a cooler so you also have to factor in the cost of a 3rd party cooler when buying the 1700x.

The drive cages in the Fractal R5 are
the only thing I don't like too. You can only screw one side of the white trays in, so the other side is free to wobble and vibrate. Very poor choice for a silent focused case. I took out the middle one so there's a fuckton of empty space.

Thank you for your help, Anon. I really appreciate it.
Would you consider the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO to be a cooler that would do a good job of cooling the 1700X?
>>
I currently have an i7 4790k, so I'm a few generations behind. I was wondering if It's worth making the jump to new architecture or is the performance increase not worth it? Not sure how much ddr4, newer CPU's etc. matter or will matter in the future.
>>
>>61330860
7700K is a little faster but it's not worth the upgrade since you'll need a new mobo and DDR4 RAM. Ryzen has moar cores and great price to performance, but again you'll need to buy a whole system. If your computer's running fine I wouldn't bother unless you really want more cores for productivity.
>>
>>61330840
212 evo is more than enough. great cooler for the price. just be aware that since ryzen is new, and uses the new AM4 socket, most 3rd party cpu coolers don't include the bracket for connecting to AM4 motherboards. You could just call or email Cooler Master and theyd probably ship you a bracket for free, but using the cooler that comes with the 1700 will be less hassle.

212 evo is definitely a better cooler, though. Youll be fine with whichever you choose,

I have an old GTX 670 and a Dell S2415H monitor. I want to go dual screens but I'm not sure if I should get a second 2 year old monitor, buy a new monitor and run non matching screens, or shell out the cash for two new monitors.

I've only ever run 1080 screens, but am open to moving to higher res.

What should I do, /g/?
>>

What do you think?
>>
>>61331252
Dual screen is worth only if one is much bigger than the other in my opinion, I use tv + monitor setup, tv wall-mounted in front at 12 and screen at 14 on desk and looks fine, both 1080p.
What's your budget? I would recommend to get matching screens if you want a symmetric setup, purely for aesthetics. You could always try to sell your old screen or buy an used one of the same brand if you like it.

I'm building a rig from scratch (only have HDD's), and I'm finding Gigabyte 570's in combo deals with other components everywhere for basically market price of both of them combined.
>>
>>61331465
A single PCIe Gen1.0 lane is about 250MB/s
PCIe Gen 2.0 is double that at 500MB/s
SATA3 tops out at 750MB/s

You'll need at least two PCIe Gen 2.0 lanes for a single full-spec SATA3 connection. You also have to look up the controller on those SATA cards. Some of them might have four PCIe Gen2.0 lanes, but the controllers are only designed to use one or two lanes themselves, which limit bandwidth and render the extra lanes power-only, not data+power.

Looking at 4 lanes PCIe SATA adapters is a good place to start looking. Anything less is probably going to throttle with more than one SATA SSD.

The 570 is priced at $170 - $180 at normal prices. For $230 you'd be better putting more money to get a GTX 1060 6GB
>>
>>61331729
4 SSDs?
Just multiply 4 * 750MB/s = 3000MB/s
And then divide 3000MB/s by 500MB/s = 6
You'll need at least 6 lanes of PCIe Gen2.0 to fully support 4 SATA3 ports being saturated by 4 SSDs.
More realistically, you'll need a PCIe Gen2.0 HBA card with controller supporting at least one SAS 6Gbps port.

Woo nelly, that controller is something else
That RAID card needs a CPU that doesn't have an iGPU, since it needs to access the memory space normally reserved for an iGPU. And yes, it's a RAID card.

You want any card with the LSI 9300-4i or 8i. That's an HBA card without the reserved memory nonesense. You can also look into the LSI 9207-4i or 8i that uses an older controller designed for the SAS 6Gbps protocol.

Nah, but just keep in mind that if you want to enable RAID on the card later, you're going to experience performance loss writing to the RAID storage.
Marvell SAS controllers are the AMD of storage controllers. LSI is usually the more robust and higher-performing choice

SAS is its own separate protocol that has backwards compatibility with SATA. It is not designed solely to be broken up into SATA protocol.

I'm doing software raidz3 (at least, that's my plan) so I specifically chose a card that expands the SATA ports without having hardware RAID capabilities, which is unneeded and to be avoides, for zfs.
