>>
>>61318658
Would be. If it worked properly and didn't spy on the user. Under Windows 10 there is a marvelous operating system just waiting to be set free. But I'm not gonna rely on Microsoft to realise this, put the real techs in charge and start delivering again. Enough is enough.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I mean, it does not run on Linux kernel and it doesn't have the privacy or security (because you're still on Windows) of Linux.

Sure it's extremely nice for Windows users but VMs have been around forever and with SSDs dual booting takes no time at all.

I don't really get these threads anyways, why would I go back to Windows just so I can use Linux? I don't play video games.
>>

>>
>>61320995
You're missing his point. He's saying there's no reason to leave Linux to run Linux programs on top of Windows.

>>61320906
You're also missing the point.

Sometimes you don't want to run a VM, which can use more resources than WSL, or you don't want to waste storage space (don't pull the "but my 3TB hard drive will never fill" or ">poorfag, can't afford a 3TB hard dive" crap, that's deflecting). On top of that, maybe you don't want to go to the trouble of installing a distro to a separate partition, which brings with it risks. Maybe you're on a machine with secure boot and you don't know how to disable it. Maybe you want to develop for Linux but for some reason want to also be running Windows (and not in its own VM). There are plenty of valid reasons to want to do this.

Also, even installing Ubuntu can be scary to some people. Many who may be curious end up shying away because the task seems daunting. This can alleviate their fears a bit, and may encourage them to go further.
>>
>>61321156
>He's saying there's no reason to leave Linux to run Linux programs on top of Windows
That the first sentence and a valid point if you don't need to run Windows programs.
The second sentence says it's "nice...but" as if VMs and dual booting are somehow a comparable alternative.

No amount of education can change racial inferiority. Whites have built schools and infrastructure in Africa ever since the first colonies and after apartheid ended and control was given to blacks, everything started crashing. Why do you think all the famines, wars and genocides skyrocketed AFTER the end of apartheid? Why do you think the Chinese are taking over Africa. If you had used the Linux subsystem for Windows (seriously -- not just tinker with it) you would disagree.

It has massive stability problems. Under any kind of strain and advanced operation, you can expect either the subsystem to crash (in the form of it becoming totally unresponsive -- you won't be able to launch any programs under it, and your shell will even stop accepting input) or even worse, a BSOD.

Worse yet, it's very slow. Certain programs (i.e. sbcl) do not run on it.

Want to run Docker (or any virtualization) and setup a shared folder between the Windows host and something running on the Linux subsystem? Get ready to lose data, because you'll get IO errors and files __will be__ corrupted.

It's one steaming pile of shit, about 10% better than cygwin.
>>
>>61320772
Sort of. It has some big stability problems when you're multi-hopping. I wouldn't recommend it if you are doing anything beyond single, non-automated connections.

>>
>>61328037
This is a pretty poor metric for how good an OS is. Besides from games, basically all applications have Linux and Windows ports at this point.

Ultimately, Windows will fail because of a lack of developers. Linux runs on most servers. Why would developers want to go home and work on a system totally foreign to them? They'll use Linux at home. Meanwhile, Windows can never hope to break into the server market like Linux has, because the system is simply too difficult to administer and too large.

Windows will continue to slowly rot. It (and Microsoft) still have many years of existence, but their best days are behind them.

>>61328233
Adobe shit and some mainstream dev software still don't have Linux support.
>windows will rot
They have enough money and control over the market to never go away. They literally dominate windows users. An example of this is that even though it was stated everywhere that windows 10 spies on you and everyone was talking about it, it still got over 33% desktop usage. Microsoft can do whatever the fuck they want now. It's like 1984. You can't escape from it. Nobody accepts that there are other alternatives.
Unless you take some massive and coordinated action against Microsoft it will never fade below 85% of the desktop market.
Plus their OS could become free very soon since they're set to follow Google's route in selling your personal info for ads instead of charging you for the OS. So if their marketshare starts falling, they will make windows free of charge.
This makes things bad in the long run. However good Linux may be, Microsoft has the developer power to make an amazing server OS and since everyone knows windows from their childhood, they will prefer it on the servers as well.

I honestly wish it falls to at least 75% desktop market share, but I don't see a scenario where that'd happen.
>>

It unironically means free of charge, as a contrast to "free as in freedom". See gratis vs libre.

Also, preinstalled Windows was never free, it's price is officially included into the price of the laptop/pre-built PC
>>
>>61328360
>Unless you take some massive and coordinated action against Microsoft it will never fade below 85% of the desktop market.
Like what? Rolling up their sleeves and bringing Linux desktop up to snuff? Not gonna happen, /g/ can only rice their Arch & whine.

Also, Windows market share WILL fade, but not because of Linux. People less and less need desktop PCs and they're becoming a nerd thing again. Chinese android box has netflix and facebook, costs like a toy, makes no noise and requires zero maintenence. If it malfunctions you just buy a new one.

And average people who "know windows from their childhood" don't need Windows servers either. They need SaaS and there's plenty of that.
>>
>>61318551
Oh, the dreams never die...
>>
>>61328767
>like what
>bringing Linux
No. Literally attacking Microsoft's servers and backups. Stealing source codes and leaking them everywhere for mods without m$ botnet, or attacking the company itself and winning. The only way windows would fade is by sabotage.
If you think a company that big won't adapt you're delusional. All they need is a small economic sacrifice to bring windows to everyone of this generation for cheaper than their competitors, keep everyone addicted to it and that's it. They're back.

>android box
>android
So it is because of Linux?

As long as kids are forcing their parents to buy them windows computers for their games windows will be in almost every household.

I don't know where you live but right now most people have 2 computers/laptops in their homes. So computers aren't a "nerd thing".
