Posting here, cause no one else on /g/ wants to talk about it. Anyone else have old cassette players?
>>
>>61310096
That is the single sexiest tape I've ever seen.

I also have no love for them. Growing up with them, I can remember the numerous problems they causes me. Having the tape catch in the player and unwind inside there, if it didn't automatically shut off when the tape ended it'd keep winding and snap the cello tape, how goddamn quickly they chewed through batteries

I still stand by what I said though. That is a fucking SEXY tape

I've heard from a few music production sites the C64s sound chip is still pretty good and usable in the modern era? Is this correct? I've never used one in my life let alone fed it an mp3
>>
>>61313725
SID was a legit as hell music chip for its era but it had some pretty hard and fast limitations. the good composers found ways to work around those limitations to a certain extent but i don't think there's any practical way to play digitized samples through it.

>>
>>61311244
Kind of like dial up, you can find out yourself. There's programs for converting c64 .tap into .wavs for recording to cassettes.

>>61312961
The D6C is arguably the best but they're becoming increasingly expensive. If your going to buy one I'd do it soon.

It's actually a home made tape. It's a replica of one I wasn't able to buy, so I found out who the cassette supplier was and made my own label in photoshop.

I used an old Realistic cassette player with Dolby, metal support, stereo recording, but my ex dropped it while listening to audiobooks. Don't know where to find reputable vintage cassette players though.
>>
>>61312272
Sure it does. It doesn't have a driver pack for things like drag and drop or clipboard sharing, but retro OSes is its raison d'être.

>>
>>61316526
>vintage
What vintage are we talking about? 80's vintage?

They usually operate at higher voltages with bigger fabrication chips then today. Gives a slight edge over today's hardware.

But that Tandy has a shell around it and all the ports are grounded, that cat won't to shit to it.

Unless your computer room is literary naked hardware, what it shouldn't be in the first place, a cat is least of your problems.
>>
>>61316526
>is vintage hardware more static-proof?

Depending on the vintage it may be before manufacturers realized household users don't have their own clean rooms and started packing their ICs full of protection devices like clamps and diodes. Fatter lithography in older circuits offers a little resilience but it's nothing compared to proper protection.

The most fragile circuits can be damaged by nothing more than induction caused by the electrostatic field of your skin without even making contact. You're unlikely to find anything that completely unprotected in any home/consumer equipment though.

There's an open source project to use it as a synthesizer:

http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid.html

I managed to snag one of these, a solder it yourself kit based on 2 SIDs:

http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=sammichsid

Unfortunately, they don't sell it anymore. It sounds fucking great though! It can actually make some really modern synth sounds, not just chiptune type stuff. Definitely way ahead of its time.

The Compaq I traded for a bag of chips when I was a kid.
The Vectra I bought 10 years ago for like €15 at a local shop.
The PowerMac G3 I got on ebay for €1 at an auction. Seriously.
The Dell workstations I got for €6 on ebay, local pickup.
Turntables were bought second hand for €20 each.
The Grundig Receiver was €5
The Dell was €5 if I remember right.
The Toshiba SFF computer was trashpicked.

>>
>>61323030

>>
>>61323114
I don't have any original disks. I found some bootable images, but a lot of fiddling was needed with old programs to properly write the weird track layout. I eventually got it running, but my test program failed to assemble. I then noticed the assembler was likely corrupted. Plus all the faffing about I did with the drives themselves. Ended up pulling one of the drives to use in my machine that wrote the images, others I tried didn't work. I wish the ROM had a monitor program like my Zenith XT clones do so that I could just sit down and play a bit.
>>
>>61323466
That sucks.
I haven't really had problems writing floppies with a PC, 360k drives work out of the box and 1.2MB drives with 300RPM mod write images fine.
I also use serial for file transfer.
>>
>>61323559
I don't have trouble writing them for my Zenith Z-161, just the Kaypro. I had planned on getting serial setup after things were working, but set it aside for a while due to frustration. I need to finish my dedicated /retro/ area so the fun can happen again.

I use the model in your pic for everyday use.

>>
>>61324326
Record as in recording.
dbx was way more popular on tapes than it ever was on LPs. It is done at line level, though, so I've been thinking of patching a line level input to the DBX decoder to loop the output of my preamp to it, just to try some dbx records.
>>
>>61325416
I have dbx on one of my cassette players.
It is fucking good.
I still need an encoder for my reel-to-reel machine.

The Technics cassette deck with dbx I have, have the ability in it, to play dbx LPs without modding it.
As you select dbx-disk and the input terminals goes through dbx to the output terminals.
>>
>>61325468
Why would you want an encoder for r2r? Good tapes at the highest speed have literally no audible hiss, and the dynamic range and frequency response are better than a CD.
>>
>>61325517
When I run at 15 ips, yes, it do sound as good as what I feed it.

But if I want longer playing times, I would need to go at 7½ ips, (which is still ok).

But for the best posibility to record as loud as possible, without bleeding into other channels, I would need dbx-tape.

>no audible hiss
That is only if there is actually music playing, if you have some more relaxed or silent passages the hiss will be noticable.

don't think that's really a plausible course of action unless you're some kind of reverse engineering prodigy with a lot of hardware to work with already

s/390 multiprises and Zs come up all the time though, but locating proper software for them will be a bitch and you'd probably end up doing most things through linux VMs anyway unless you're autistic enough to pull out an assembler and roll your own shit

It is indeed really good.

I use mine if I want to adjust other cassette decks. Simply because it works so well and reliable.
Mine is a very late model, so it shouldn't be in need of new belts/service any time soon.

I have thought of rechargeable batteries. But just making my own USB-to-barrelplug cable was easier, since it runs perfectly well on 5V as well as the rated 6V.
I measured the powerdraw to be ~0.205 A at max, so it shouldn't put too much stress on almost anything.
But powering it from a computer, can sometimes introduce some noise. Which I might be able to fix if I make a proper powerdelivery system to it.

Not that i know of but my advice is to ask around to relatives, friends and coworkers if they have any "old junk computers" they want to get rid of. Start looking at local ads. garage sales, auctions, maybe even put an ad up yourself saying you're looking for old hardware. Keep an eye out during big garbage day. If you have any electronic recycling centers near by, maybe go snoop there and ask questions. Some won't let you leave with anything, others don't care, some of these places people just dump shit at the front gate so pass by regularly for a good snatch. Most importantly, don't pay out the ass for old stuff, it's not because it's old that it's worth a lot, check sold ebay listings to get an idea of how much to pay then try to pay less then that. Post back here anything you get.

I'm mostly into high-end gear and not very nostalgic for 8-bits so there's a bit of bias, but I never really liked the all-in-one keyboard design myself. It feels more like a toy than a machine and it's not as practical.

Though it's not all bad, I love really simple low-cost designs as well like the TS1000 and co. to pair with shitty portable TVs.
>>
>>61340432
It's quite practical for the time, you didn't have 3rd party keyboards anyways. Just having a keyboard you connected a disk drive and TV onto was quite a neat design.

Also there's high end 8-bit gear, like the CP/M machines of the time.

>>
>>61340551
It was definitely practical in context, since they were designed with the living room in mind rather than the office desk. But in terms of the latter use case? It wouldn't serve you as well, they weren't very modular or expandable, nor were they all that powerful.
>Also there's high end 8-bit gear, like the CP/M machines of the time.
But to be fair, here, none of that stuff was truly high-end, even when it was new it was considered slow and limited, but it still did math faster and more correctly than you in the end and that's what matters.

That's not to say that there weren't still some pretty nice 8-bit systems that were high-end within their own class, however, especially in the early days.

>>
>>61341049
You can tell this is a display setup not for serious use because of the non ergo chair, the monitor off to the side at an awkward angle and the phone/ans setup at the far side of the desk behind the keyboard.
Also the internal Audigy panels tend to pick up horrendous interference from shaking across all the noise sources inside the case.

You need the PS/2 config disk
Adrock, Mike D, and MCA need to be configured with a bootable config disk

http://www.walshcomptech.com/selectpccbbs/
>>
>>61347330
that's exactly what the reference disk is, it configures the system and microchannel cards as well, looks like all the ISA systems use different names for them though

I think mine's fucking up reading it because of dusty heads or the shitty USB floppy drive I wrote the disk with, figured I'd risk it since it was a fucking ancient one but I guess I'll dig out a real one later
>>
>>61347472
>that's exactly what the reference disk is,
you didn't say reference disk
you said
>refdisk time
refdisk
re fdisk
congrats. you are a lazy fuck who couldn't type a few more characters to make sure your message was interpreted correctly.

I wonder how well Debian would go on an old 80s mainframe
>>
>>61347614
what the fuck, why is this my fault?
if you actually knew what you were talking about to begin with and weren't just regurgitating the first few results of a google search you would have quickly linked "refdisk" and "reference disk" in the context of a microchannel PS/2, it's a decently common term

is it actually still usable as a mail device?

don't know if I'd be very into the form factor for that kind of usage but it might be cool just to have something simple and dedicated
>>
>>61348531
I think it actually is, but you'd need a dialup account. I also remember something about needing to hack it to use a different email provider, but it was easy on the older models like this one.

Considering they were pretty modern 32+ bit systems running entire businesses with tons of concurrent users, VMs and processes, an operating system for toasters should be okay.

Rarely it worked having several threads after another, last time was 4 threads, 3 slow and 1 fast thread, a week in a row, with the last thread hitting bump limit under 12 hours.
But judging by the speed of this thread and amount of bumps needed, not a good time.
