I've been told as an engineering student I should mess around with those. What are some cool ideas?

you can turn your house into smart house with arduino. Like automated water dispenser for your plants or for your fishs, alarm for your windows and main door, smartphone controlled light switches etc.

Also you can create basic watch with lcd screen and some basic number games with leds. The thing is your imagination is the limit.

it's pretty easy, just get yourself some relay switches, and something like MQTT to send messages to the arduino with.

This explains how to connect arduino through bluetooth
After bluetooth connection you can use voltage controlled switches on your light switches in order to control it through your smartphone
Or in theory you can use internet to control it too.
