BSD or the Berkely Software Distribution is a well supported and robust full fledged Unix operating system, usually with a minimalist amount of packages on install, but a large and well supported package system for builds and building systems.
It is commonly used for by mainframes, legacy Unix systems, routers, and Internet Service Providers

server OS for business, testing operating system design and kernel hacking

better documentation, more unified namespace and design between BSDs than the Linux mess, better Unix principles
the only issue is also a benefit, since it has less market share there's less docs than linux but their docs are more thorough
