I need a new router. Preferably has *bsd as a base and a good firewall
What are my options?

bonus points: no backdoors
pfSense is your best choice. You can buy the hardware from them with pfSense installed or build your own.

Is the SG1000 a good option? How does if fare against a RasPi or a BananaPi?

Looks good, I use a mini-PC from China. Might have bought an SG-1000 had I known at the time.

there's a dual nic brix floating about, bit pricey for just a pf sense box but it's good for other uses around the house.

your pic rel is pretty based.
wr1043nd. 32MB RAM, single core MIPS CPU, 450Mbps 3x3 MIMO, ddwrt/openwrt compatible. Plus it has USB 2.0 port capable of handling 4G modem or 2,5" HDD. Mine is 7 years old and still works.

How did you fix the overheating/rebooting problem?
Mine's borderline unusable, it would reboot multiple times in a gaming session and the bottom is hot to the touch.

What? Are we talking about the same router?
Mine has stock heatsink on the CPU, and the motherboard is v1. Maybe you got an used one with removed heatsink?
Mine is running newest beta dd-wrt with stock CPU clocks (400MHz).

I haven't opened mine up but I think it's a V1.4, I'm not with the unit right now so I can't be sure, but it probably doesn't have the heatsink.
Got dimensions on the heatsink to get for it?

2cm x 2cm.

Is there a specific height I need to be looking for? I have a few southbridge/northbridge heatsinks laying around but I think they might be too high for the case to close back up.

Aluminum is a very soft metal, nothing that pic related can't fix.
