NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I fucking did not notice this morning about this!

http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1331980

>SAN FRANCISCO — Suspension of production at a Taiwanese DRAM fab owned by Micron Technology will further disrupt an already tight global DRAM supply situation and lead to price increases, according to a market watcher.

>Micron (Boise, Idaho) suspended operation of Micron Technology Taiwan's Fab 2 in Taiwan's Taoyuan City July 1 due to a malfunctioning nitrogen gas dispensing system, which led to the contamination of wafers and equipment. DRAMeXchange, a market research firm which tracks memory pricing, said it estimates that Inotera suffered a production capacity loss of about 60,000 wafer starts per month.

>DRAMeXchange estimates that the disruption will cut about 5.5 percent of the world's global DRAM capacity in July.

Great, now DRAM prices will keep staying high. No wonder Micron stock prices were down today.

RIP anyone wanting to build a new system/upgrade RAM going into the latter half of this year/next year.

Also wondering if I should sell my 400 stock of Micron on margin.
>>
Every time I want to upgrade theirs a fucking problem. HDDs, DRAM, and miners.

are they the only one making this shit?
>>
>>61242187

No but they are practically a cartel/oligopoly like HDDs and CPUs. Literally only 5 companies were making it when they got sued by the DOJ for price-fixing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRAM_price_fixing

And since then, one company got acquired and one bankruptcy. Only Micron, Hynix and Samsung left.

You don't really need anything above DDR4-2133/2400. Ryzen gets more out of higher DRAM speeds due to Infinity fabric being tied to DRAM speeds but the old adage about RAM speed price difference could be pocketed or spent elsewhere to greater effect. You could also overclock a good set of DDR4-2133/2400 to that speed or higher.

But it is your money.

Ever since OCZ got out of the business, RAM has been fine and will work without any issues other than motherboard compatibility with AM4 boards which can still be an issue. GSkill and Corsair are safe brands to go with.

With the prices being as they are, there's really no fucking reason not to get at least 2666 and preferably 3000, especially if you're getting Ryzen. Ryzen takes a significant performance hit for RAM that's clocked below 2666.

It really comes down to if you want to pay for XMP to 2666/3000 or if you want to overclock your way to those speeds.

The latter requires some research and willingness to put in the time. And especially with the price increases incoming, it may be worth more in the future to just overclock vs paying more.

I don't buy that anything actually happened at the foundry. They've been pulling this shit for as long as I can remember. HDD factories, NAND, DRAM, etc there always seems to be some excuse to further raise the prices.
The whole situation is fucked. DRAM is a very important commodity, every american owns some in one form or another yet these companies consistently get away with this shit.

Friendly reminder that fast RAM makes it much easier to hit 144hz in engines that weren't built wit that in mind.

Exactly. Just buy and stop worrying about minuscule changes.

It's only a big deal for people buying hundreds of GB of RAM.
>>
>>61243423
I disagree about the big deal part. It is a big deal man. It's directly increasing the amount people are spending on their new PCs during the first period where it's worth upgrading since sandy.
Not only that but it's taking place next to an SSD price fixing thing.
During a time where nvidia has had no competition for a long time which was followed by a mining craze.
All taking place when AMD is finally giving the desktop CPU market some life. It sucks.
>>
>>61243420
>end of this year
Not anymore. ;^)
>>
>>61243247
Maybe 5-10 years ago but Moore's law tapping out made sure prices would not come down.

I think once zen2 goes mainstream and we get apu/soc prices will come down finally.

Blame Intel and Nvidia for keeping prices up.

500usd used to get a top of the line GPU and same for a high end CPU

Now it's barely mid range
>>
>>61243470
I won't disagree that the graphics card market is fucked right now but that's all I tell you.
>>
Ram and SSDs are overpriced because of collusion, these a "accidents" are just excuses.

They have done this before.
>>
>>61243654
The GTX 1080 is disgusting when you really look at it. It's performance relative to the generation before it and the competitor warrants a high price, yes but look at the actual silicon.
It's a midrange card through and through. Tiny chip, gddr5x. They even sell the slightly cut down one so you know silicon utilization is great.
Yet they put it on market at $600.
$600 for that tiny ass chip, vega is bigger.
As the processes get better you get more chips per wafer yet they increase price.
>>

You are all idiots 4 years ago there was a glut which led to massive losses. Manufacturers were selling below cost leading to low investment. The main problem is that every retard today wants his smartphone to have 4gb of RAM causing a shortage. It will short itself out as the higher prices encourage an increase in supply. Learn some economics

DDR4 16GB 2666Mhz by the way. Fucking insane. If one incident can disrupt your supply this much maybe they should consider building more factories. Oh wait this is all bullshit and they're just price gauging.

>Manufacturers were selling below cost leading to low investment.
And for years now they price has been through the roof, with little investment in fabs.

> It will short itself out as the higher prices encourage an increase in supply.
It hasn't for these years. Now another convenient excuse to hike the prices.

There isn't a real shortage, just a low supply leading to higher prices(which everyone has to pay anyways, because we need ram.) You can still easily get a hold of some ram, it's just expensive.

Now this "low supply" doesn't mean they are selling any less, just that they get massive profits. We only have 3 relevant manufacturers and they have all been found guilty of collusion before. Do you seriously trust them? Are you paid by them?

For example of a real shortage, look at GPUs. You can't even get one most of the time, prices are double, but most of the profits end up at re-sellers and scalpers, and the manufacturers are hard at work trying to remedy the situation.

UPDATE:

Following queries by Taiwan's DigiTimes, Micron has clarified that: "there was no nitrogen leaking incident nor evacuation of personnel. A minor event did occurred at the facility, but operations are recovering speedily without material impact to the business." It adds that if any impact is felt it will be upon LPDDR4 DRAM customers such as Apple.
