What hard drives do you guys get nowadays? I'm looking at 8TB Seagate Enterprise or 8TB Seagate Barracuda Pro because it comes with five years warranty. Usually when a company offers that many years, it means they're confident in the product. I heard thes drives come with something called SMR and aggressive head parking, anyone with these two drives can confirm that?
I'm also looking at Deskstar but I don't know if NAS drives are meant for normal PC single drive storage.
Trying to fill my home server with some cheap ass NAS drives and I havent trusted Seagate since a terrible incident in 2009-2011 with one of their drives
I just want some cheap as fuck space man
Shuck the 8tb WD easy stores from bestbuy.
Intuitively I propotion that if a drive has an insane amount of space like 8 or 10 tb then it is that much more sensitive to corruption.
Am I right in feeling that because it's one of the only things keeping me away from getting a single 10tb drive vs splitting that 10 across several smaller 2 or 3 tb ones
There's only 4 choices: Toshiba, Seagate, HGST and WD.
Toshiba, HGST and WD: Russian roulette with a six-shooter.
Seagate: Russian roulette with a pistol.

Except my media server has all USED seagates. I've been using them for about 4 years now, haven't had a single problem.
You've been memed into thinking this way.

Actually I'm pretty sure that WD bought out HGST's hard drive division, so there even less choice.

WD Red's are pretty great.
I don't fuck with Seagate since the 2011 incident. They've probably fix things, but it's left a sour taste in my mouth.

4TB HGST (NAS models) in RAID5.
Only have like a third of my pool full, so probably won't add a 8TB*(4+1) pool for quite a long time.
Would almost definitely go HGST again though.

>Seagate
>Been using a 1.5 TB Seagate since they were first made available
>Smart has been saying near failure due to power on time and head parks for well over a year, but the fucker just won't die
>Finally bought a 3TB Seagate for dirt cheap late last year
>Both drives running fine.
I love getting things cheap because of fud.

lucky, I'm in a class action against seagate for their fucked up 3TB drives. I had 8 of em in raid 10 and within a year I had 6/8 fail, 3 of which were DOA.
The replacements I received had a 100% failure rate, and I lost every bit of data I've ever owned.
I tried to fix the drives but the entire surface was stripped to dust making my data completely unrecoverable.
i have two 4tb wd red since last year
they still work fine
WD black if it's going inside of a powered case. WD green/red if it's going into unpowered "cold storage", whichever is cheaper. Samsung or Intel SSD for OS, M.2 form factor is spicy hot right now.
Seagate: Never ever not ever.
