If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - 144hz only
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

What are things to look out for when switching from mid tower to micro ATX case?

Local shop doesn't have specs on the matx and the people there aren't really knowledgeable. I'm forced to just inspect it myself. Tips?

Give model.
What is it that gives you major headaches?
Have you calibrated the colors?
Most monitors ship with high contrast and brightness for showroom display not meant for normal use.

>>61238992
Yes. Or a 1060.

>vega is just a 2 year late 14nm port of Fiji

oh wow this is bad. HBM was a mistake and nvidia saw that from a mile away which is why they stuck with GDDR
>>
Anyone have experience with Canadian Newegg? I ordered some parts from them Tuesday morning, and it's still saying Packaging. I've never bought anything from them, so I'm not sure how long this normally takes.
>>
>>61239083
More like Nvidia stuck to GDDR to fuck over AMD by keeping demand low, the supply was highly priced thereby screwing over AMD who had announced they were going to use HBM2.
>>
>>61239095
bruh it's been a day not everybody is amazon
>>
>>61239095
Did it come from Newegg or a third party seller?
>>
>>61239113
Two days, really. I ordered it at 7:40AM, and I'm almost as far east as I can get in this country, so that'd definitely be before regular working hours at Newegg's warehouses or whatever. Also, I do know it's soon, but I had hoped to get the parts by Friday.

>>61239114
All of it is being sold by Newegg themselves
>>
>>61238904
Friendly bump.
>>
>>61239485
Nothing much. mATX is just a smaller ATX. Just make sure the case has enough clearance for whatever shit you put inside and that it is well vented.
>>
>>61239525
Thanks.
How about the mount points or whatever they're called for the components? Anything to look out for there?

Do ATX psu's fit in micro ATX cases? I've done some research but I was wondering if it applies to most cases, even for no name brand ones.
>>
>>61239577
Depends on the casing. Get a fully modular one. The mounting points should be the same for all mATX case. Mounting points for motherboards are standardized anyway.
>>
I ordered a graphics card from Amazon about a week ago that was out of stock, do they generally take long to restock shit?

>Only 5 left in stock - order soon.
But it is in stock?
Also the non OC versions of strix are lower binned cards. Not that you need higher binned 1080ti anyway. Just thought you should know.
>>
>>61239720
Nah, look at the $560 option, it's out
>>
>>61239749
I can't seem to find it.
What are the stuff you selected for the $560 option?
>>
>>61239784
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ol/B01GRRRW0A/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Also I'm fine with it being lower binned, I just needed a decent $1500 build
>>
>>61239806
All 3 look to be in stock for me.
Anyway you might want to contact Amazon support for this. They will know it better than people on here anyway.
>>
>>61239855
Hmm, that's strange. I'll probably call next week anyways if nothing happens, thanks though.
>>
>>61239962
No need to call. Just open a conversation with their support stuff. Certainly you can't be that lazy.
>>

Help me,
Should I buy a gtx 980ti used for 300, 1080 for 400 or wait for vega ? My card just died and I earned a lot these weeks. Aiming for 1440p Very high/ultra settings at 60 fps
>>
>>61240126
1080 for 400 is a deal. Where you getting it from?
>>
>>61240126
1080. You can wait for Vega but everything about the Vega reeks of shit and damage control at the moment.

We are 3 weeks out from launch and there is no official "leaked" benchmarks. From the speculations and FE benches, it shows Vega is pretty fucking shit and AMD has done nothing to quell such rumors except their assurance that RX will be better. It is an all round shit show but if you can afford to wait, why not.

Lookin for a new GPU to confidently play new vidya. Currently using an Asus AEH5770, used to have a Sapphire R7 290x but that fuckin died playing a game on Steam that claims minimum requirement is Intel HD 3000. Anyway, I've narrowed it down to these 3, they look the best for their price and I'm not going to wait around for new stock to come in. Most games I play are fine on the EAH5770, but want to play Rocket League, Battlerite, CSGO a bit better, any games like that really. I don't care for graphics quality much as long as resolution is 1080 and smooth gameplay. Rest of PC:

AMD Fx-8320
gigabyte 970a-d3p
8gb ram
decent lil 500w psu, powered me r7 290x to death i guess

>>
>>61240570
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-graphics-cards,4725-2.html

Did you check benchmarks before moving screens?
1920x1080 = 2073600
2560x1440 = 3686400
That is almost x2 the amount of pixels your GPU has to render at the same time. Although by all accounts you should be getting nearly 60 on ultra. So there might be something wrong with your build if you aren't getting 60 on high.

I'm purchasing a PC from....Dell soon due to the need to pay monthly.

I need to know if I should be investing in a 7700k or a 1700X.

Part list would be as follows:

Either:

A)7700k
16gb ram
1080

B) 1700X
580
32GB RAM

Buying from Dell, does anyone know the quality of RAM used? I've been out of the hardware game for awhile, but I do know Ryzen scales with high speed RAM.

1700x. though most reviews put it under the 7700k i think its still worth getting especially if you do other stuff besides gaming. also id lower the ram to 16 unless you actually need 32. and 580 probably costs the same as 1080 right now but the 1080 performs better

I'm making a build to play MMO's, MOBA's, and other competitive games on a 1080p 240 hz monitor, stuck on what CPU I should be getting, just got a few questions for anyone who wants to answer:

Do newly made 7700k's still have thermal issues?

Would a ryzen 1700x be able to reach 240hz w/ a 1080 ti in the game types I listed above?

I'm mainly concerned about longevity since i'll be playing the same old games all the time. Which chip would last the longest and reach 240fps without OCing?
>>
>>61241056
why single out the 1700X? All Ryzen chips are overclockable and there's virtually no difference between the 1700 and 1700X

7700k does run hotter than a 1700x. and with a 1080ti I'm sure both can reach 240. though im not sure how much it takes to run mmos and mobas. And both cards will probably last a long while unless you don't cool them properly.

Thanks man, I'll compare both of them. So far the Phantek wins out with it supporting more fans and being $30 cheaper. However, this is kinda a moot point with the NZXT being sold at my local shop so I'd save $50 on delivery anyway from having to ship the Phantek. If you had to rate both /10 what would you give each? My cpu cooler (an all in one liquid cooler) came with a fan hub. The two radiator fans are PWM. I have a non-pwm case fan. Can I still plug the case fan into the hub? Or am I better off using the regular fan header on the board? Should I go buy a pwm case fan instead?

Yes you can. All it means is that you can't control the fan via PWM.

This isn't a PS1. Check what RAM is good for your mobo by looking at the manufacturer website. Or get another stick of the same 8GB.

if your mobo supports pwm and you have a non-pwm fan then it doesn't matter where you plug it in

Need advice as I'm completely ignorant on pc's in general.
If I'm looking at buying a GTX1080 for 1440p gaming, is it wise to invest in a Gsync monitor? They're fairly rare and really expensive if you want to combine them with ips&144hz.

If I'd have to choose 2 out of these 3: 144hz/ips/g-sync, which ones should I prioritize?
>>
>>61242791
144hz>1440p>ips>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>g-sync
>>
>>61242791
Panel -> Size -> Frequency -> Gsync
In that order.

Ask yourself if you need the full color of IPS? Or would you prefer the fast response time of a TN.

Afterwards what size you want your monitor to be.

Then what frequency.

And then if still have extra cash, G-sync

I've read up a bit on TN having a slightly faster response time, however I've also read that it's a really minor difference compared to the benefits that you're getting from ips (unless you only play competitive games religiously).

7700k has roughly 10-15% higher average FPS at 1080p if the game is CPU bound but this is only apparent if you are over ~100 FPS already. In any other gaming scenario it either ties or loses to Ryzen. Note that while the 7700k's averages are higher it has lower minimums in some cases resulting in noticeable stutter.

You don't need a custom CPU cooler if you are going for the 1700. If you are then get the 1700x, else you are just wasting money on a stock cooler you won't use.
Check your mobo QVL with your RAM and make sure they are on the list especially since it is AM4.
Do you really need M2? I doubt you need a 960 unless you need really fast read/write. A 850 will do just fine.
Also you build absolutely does not need a 850W PSU. A 650W is fine if you want OC headroom or else simply get a 550W one will do. Also you don't need platinum rating unless you are running it 24/7.

I kind of wish I had gotten a 1700X, but that was the first thing I bought about a month ago because I found the 1700 on ebay for like $270. Poor reviews for the new stock coolers are why I ended up getting the Noctua. Still, isn't the 1700X almost $50 more expensive? I'm basically paying the same price as if I had gotten the 1700X outright, except now I have a good cooler. Just needs to be OC'd to >3.4GHz to make up the difference.

G.Skill sticks are on the Taichi's QVL. Flare is supposed to be specially made for AM4, whatever that means. Almost got a cheaper ASRock board but reviews said they fucking EoL'd it already after only being out for 3 months.

The 960 is only like $30 more than the 850, is that really too much?

I specifically went way higher than I needed on the PSU power rating because I'm planning on OC'ing the CPU and upgrading the GPU in the future, and the future looks like housefires or SLI (which the 1050Ti won't do either).

>>61243366
M.2 is a type of slot on the motherboard. No SATA cables, but sometimes they have M.2 cards that work at SATA speeds. The 960 is supposed to be PCI-E instead of SATA, which is faster.

No single card will ever need more than 750W. Even the power hungry 290x had a recommended manufacturer PSU of 750W. Only get a 850W if you are going to SLI (don't SLI is a huge meme). Otherwise a 650W will be fine.

I remember you. That is one problem I hate about Ryzen, it needs a GPU to test if it post so you can't eliminate that. Anyway, disconnect everything from you motherboard, leaving only the RAM, GPU, CPU + fan and PSU. Test if it will post. If it doesn't post, disconnect your GPU and bring it to another PC to test, if it works. That leaves your Mobo, CPU and RAM to troubleshoot. Anyone one at the time. Good luck anon. If you are lazy just RMA everything.
>>
>>61243548
I should have clarified. I "was" poor. The only reason I didn't bite the bullet on GPUs is sheer butthurrt over coin miners. That would have shot me right up to $2000 for the whole thing instead of ~$1300.

The EoL fiasco is the ASRock X370 Gaming K4. Apparently they are replacing it with the X370 Gaming X, but that board has B350 tier features while being an X370 chipset.

You've convinced me on the PSU though, I'll cancel the order and swap it with the 650W version.

>>
>>61243830
My only complaint about it is the LGA1151 socket motherboards are at the end of their life cycle, and don't have much of an upgrade path down the road. By Contrast, AMD's AM4 socket platform is good until 2020 at minimum, and has an extensive upgrade path, even including 8 core/16 thread chips
The other thing is the 1050 and even the 1050Ti really aren't powerful enough to take advantage of the extra vram, so I'd suggest a normal 2GB 1050.

Here's a build I did last night for shits and giggles that's better in the long run.

>>
>>61243830
If you're waiting a few months then I suggest taking a look at Ryzen 3 when it releases soon. Odds are good that it'll be a better value than the G4560. But if it's not you can stick with that.

I would get better thermal compound, though. Arctic MX4 is a good cheap alternative, Gelid GC Extreme and Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut are top performers but more expensive.

Yo /g/entlemen, I have a few questions for this build (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/B4J7jc).

Is a Cryorig H7 ok for the 7700K? I'd need to upgrade to something better if I want to OC, right?

Can I ignore the warning about the BIOS update or should I take it seriously? I can't believe that Asus would ship to me an outdated mobo right now.

In case anyone wonders, I'm not buying a discrete GPU yet: I'm sticking to integrated gfx until the ethereum bullshit goes away.

Thanks in advance. Pic unrelated.
>>
>>61243899
Depends on the case? And how much you value quiet
>>
>>61243903
>Can I ignore the warning about the BIOS update or should I take it seriously?
if they send you an outdated mobo then you cant use it
>>
>>61243909
I was just wondering if silent cases weren't a meme and if they're actually worth investing money in. I do value silence a lot.
>>
>>61243925
I've got the Define R4 and I can tell you right now half the time I don't even realise it's on, even with headphones off; that's with all 7 fan slots taken up in it too
>>
>>61243809
Cause unplugging and plugging back stuff fixed it.
>>
>>61243925
Generally speaking the more quiet it is, the worse the airflow is so you'll need to balance things. Usually they have dampening foam, closed sides, barely any vents, etc etc. If you can passively cool some components then you should to help with noise.
>>
>>61243903
I would go Ryzen 7 and get a shitty used GPU in the meantime. Intel's integrated graphics are absolute dogshit.

>>61243915
What I mean is: is that a real possibility? It's been a while that kaby-lake was released, if they send me a mobo straight out of the factory it should support it, right?
>>
>>61243944
I'll get a normal case then, don't want to mess with cooling
>>
>>61243959
You're going to have to think about cooling anyway... Take a look at Fractal Design's Define series like the other anon said, those are solid and pretty quiet for most people. You can have two 140mm fans in the front for intakes and one in the rear and set them to quiet mode on the mobo. Then just get a relatively quiet air cooler for your cpu and you're set.

Ryzen is something that I considered, but I don't want to spend money on a shitty 460 or a used GPU, i'll just play old NES/SNES games on the intel hd until prices for GPUs go down.
>>
>>61243957
they just print the boards and stock em up somewhere dude, they arent paying people to flash each board each time a new bios revision is released
you're better off buying a dirt cheap supported CPU or buying a different mobo
>>
>>61243957
>That pic
Damn son...those are all very strong points at hit home 110%
>>
>>61243975
You're just buying a headfuck with the 7700k, though. Ryzen is the better choice unless you need that extra 10-15% single thread performance and lose 30-50% multiple thread performance.

What's wrong with a shitty used GPU as a holdover anyway? Even a 750 Ti would outperform Intel's shitty graphics.

"slient cases" are a meme. To make a system quiet you need as much airflow as possible, not sound deadening matieral.

>Silverstone FT05
>No hard drives
>Big or even passive CPU cooler.
>Custom GPU cooler (not the shit they sell your as custom cards. Actual custom GPU coolers with big ass 120mm fans on them)
>Fan curves that let the GPU get as hot as
posisble without being dangerous.
>Undervolting and underclocking

That's the quietest you can get on air.
>>
I finally see the light with a fully modular psu

:(
>>
>>61244031
It's not a meme, sound dampening also blocks things like coil whine and PWM fan noise, hard drive noise, etc.
>>
>>61243975
You'll be surprised at what a hd 4400/4600 graphics card can play. Check it out. I'm currently using mine aswell since my gtx650 broke. Also waiting for price change. Playing dragons dogma: dark arisen on medium settings.
>>
>>61244065
Isn't that a PS3 game from 5 years ago? I mean it should run that better than medium to be honest.
>>
>>61244054
That worked 20 years ago when cases were almost completely closed up because you didn't need much airflow to cool a PC.

Today almost all the noise is caused by fans and airflow, so that's what you have to optimize.

If you can hear PWM Fan noise, your fans are shit.
If your hard drive is noisy, throw it away and get an SSD or WD Red.
If you can hear coil whine you've reached your goal of building a very quiet system.
>>
>>61244099
Doesn't matter how much you shift goalposts, the point is that silent cases have a purpose and that is to reduce noise by blocking and diffusing it.

In fact you need less airflow and cooling today because we have much more efficient processors. Telling people to just throw out all sources of noise in a system is just frankly stupid unless they have something defective.

need some recommendation for AM4 mATX mobo. I was planning to get the ASRock AB350M Pro4 but the stores here don't seem to carry any.

Is the ASRock AB350M-HDV any good? It has fewer slots and half the PCB thickness of the Pro4. I heard bad things about MSI boards. The Asus Prime is available.

Left out storage since I bought a new SSD and HDD recently. Other than that am I forgetting anything?

Budget is $1500USD max for my video games, any extra I save helps for any changes due to stock and a bigger budget on 1-2 new monitors. Might use a 1700X if Microcenter runs out, since I'd be paying only $400 for the CPU+MOBO because of the bundle.

Convince me to get R1700 now and not wait for Coffee Lake for 2 less cores and way better single-core performance.

Seriously though, please do. I'm tired of waiting to build a PC but it seems like at least waiting to see the specks and price on Coffee Lake is the most reasonable thing today.

I'd recommend going for 3200 mhz memory if the cost isn't too much bigger.

No real budget, but trying to make a dedicated storage/media machine for myself and 3 room mates. Consisting of 2 laptops, and 2 desktops, was wanting to help out and trying to clear their systems up by storing most the stuff to a dedicated machine, while also being able to stream the movies/music from the machine onto the devices we use.
Was considering plex, but not a clue how to work that into a storage system as well.
Would like it on either 24/7, or for a good portion of the day.
Put this together a little bit ago, but not sure what I'd need for the use.
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/Rg9Thq
Ideally would like to make it a lot cheaper, while still maintaining decent performance for its' use.

>>
>>61245657
The only things I'm really doing on my PC are shitposting, watching videos and playing games. Obviously, I want the best performance at the latter. I've also had a pretty bad PC for the last... 7 or so years, I'm going to play a lot of games from that period, on highest settings in 1440p. I know modern games will probably (hopefully) be better optimized for MOAR CORES, hell Crysis 3 is one of few games which perform noticeably better on Ryzen, but a lot of games from that period love a strong single core.

Plus, I heard that's a problem with emulators too.
>>
>>61245332
All prices are. 1080 prices have gone from 550 to 590 in three days and 1050 have gone from like 140 to 180 here in EU. Guess US isn't better.

I already have a PSU, GPU 1 SSD and a 3TB HDD.

I'm building a Linux machine. Mainly focused for small content creation and very light gaming. I know this is overkill but I mostly use ffmpeg to encode or change file types. I want something that doesn't draw too much power and make too much heat.

What's the best motherboard for a single GPU with some PCIE expansion slots? I might want to get a capture card or audio interface to get rid of the external one I have.
