IRC is more like push notifications. It's great for sending messages to large numbers of people, but for actual discussion it's either endless silence or endless bullshit. And IRC support channels are so bad they rarely give anything but "RTFM".

The cool thing about Discord is that it combines all the useful features from various applications into one normie/user friendly app.

Discord is easy to use, has a great UI, a dark design by default, great apps for all major platforms (electron sucks a bit but it does the job) and most importantly, it "just werks".

Yes, Discord ain't open fucking source, but guess what, besides /g/ nobody gives a shit.

IRC is outdated and only tech literate people use it. /g/ might think this is a good thing, but i also talk to people who just use computers for daily activities like shopping, messaging and reading the news and the weather.
