Freedos is made for embedded systems and the like, so it won't really be of much use on its own

freedos just got a bunch of linux tools so its pretty neat :)

its also nice for flashing bios or gpu firmware without requiring proprietary software

FreeDOS should merge with the FreeVMS project. The DCL from VMS machines at least.

They're plenty useful as a machine to ssh from that has a real (non-touchscreen) keyboard. From there you can control music, a file playing in mpv on another machine, play nethack, etc.

its a great utility OS for flashing proprietary drivers or emulating a environment to execute a closed binary and using legacy software in a open manner

no one is expecting FreeDOS to be a day to day OS for general computing

Not the other guy but depending on the look you can get a nice working machine out of an old computer. I installed Devuan from the netinstall and experimented a bit. I stood with a tiling wm with easy defaults but the motif windo manager is my second option.

If you want lightweight then check vtwm, can be tweaked to look different editing a simple file.

DOS is pretty much unusable for Internet as everything has gone to HTTPS and browsers like Arachne don't support it. Games are better off under DOSbox because the graphics are crisper, even for ASCII stuff
