yes. since netbooks are of no real use anyways.
>>
>>61216630
That is the most truthful thing someone has said all day.
>>
>>61216598
I've seen some people at /g/ and other places buying used laptops just for that. According some youtubers is pretty comfy.
>>
>>61216643
I'm buying a netbook for that exact purpose as well.
>>
just use a Bare Metal OS , its a meme either way
>>
>>61216766
Better use TempleOS then.
>>
>>61216598
It's not fully MS-DOS compatible, it's more of a meme OS.
Only exists so manufactures have something to pre install on their machines.

Freedos is made for embedded systems and the like, so it won't really be of much use on its own

It probably could work for a netbook, but I don't know of any good browsers made for it
>>
>>61217077
I'm not looking for a fully MS-DOS compatible operating system.
>>
If you actually somehow have ethernet working on it, maybe, MAYBE
>>
>>61217228
I would be surprised if I got wifi to work.
>>
>>61217216
Arachne is a full internet suite, and is not the only one
>>
>>61217296
Pretty good DOS browser, but I only tried it once.
>>
freedos just got a bunch of linux tools so its pretty neat :)

its also nice for flashing bios or gpu firmware without requiring proprietary software
>>
FreeDOS should merge with the FreeVMS project. The DCL from VMS machines at least.
>>
>>61217637
I don't think that is the same as FreeDOS...
>>
>>61216642
They're plenty useful as a machine to ssh from that has a real (non-touchscreen) keyboard. From there you can control music, a file playing in mpv on another machine, play nethack, etc.
>>
>>61218067
Actually that is true.

ATTENTION!

>ms-dos software archive
Go to: ftp://ftp.bu.edu/pub/mirrors/simtelnet/msdos/
Download something and report back whenever it works. Make sure to post screenshots.
>>
>>61217225
Though luck finding software for it then, DOS software was never particularly open source
>>
Think about network drives, most DOS drivers for network chipsets are from the 90's.
>>
>>61218264
Nice, thanks.
>>
>>61218042
Original developers of DOS based on VMS, FreeDOS devs might as well complete the job and add full DCL.
>>
>>61216598
FreeDos is stupid. Just use lubuntu/xbuntu. So you can still use thunderbird, and browse sorceforge. Or turn off X for mad speed gainz.
My EDC ssh netbook:
> asus 1001px runing Xfce mint
> 1.6 single core atom
> 4gb ram (Upgraded)
> 120gb ssd (Upgraded)
>>
>>61218681
Nah, I'd rather use FreeDOS since I want a dos device for personal shit (note-taking, school, etc.)
>>
>>61218746
Its a fun project i guess. Good luck anon.
>>
>>61218385
I'm not going to use it for web browsing
>>
>>61217077
>It's not fully MS-DOS compatible
MS-DOS isn't the only DOS-like system out there. Any modern DOS program won't target MS-DOS only extentions anyway.
>>
>>61218746
Just do a debian netinstall and use it in text console mode, or use a light WM light icewm or something
>>
>>61218911
I'll check out IceWM.
>>
>>61218952
But I might still go for FreeDOS.

>>61218952
Somewhat outdated but relevant.

>>61218978
I too want to see FreeDOS more used, is a fine system.
>>
>>61218807
Nope, literary 99.9% of DOS software is MS-DOS first and any other DOS second.

>Any modern DOS program won't target MS-DOS only extensions* anyway.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
>>
its a great utility OS for flashing proprietary drivers or emulating a environment to execute a closed binary and using legacy software in a open manner

no one is expecting FreeDOS to be a day to day OS for general computing

i think its a great project that deserves more recognition to be honest
>>
>>61218997
I looked at IceWM, didn't look that great. It's looks like some sort of Windows Classic theme.
>>
>>61219000
freedos works with drdos software and also opendos

it also now has coreutils so basic bash functions like cp ls ect
>>
>>61219075
Not the other guy but depending on the look you can get a nice working machine out of an old computer. I installed Devuan from the netinstall and experimented a bit. I stood with a tiling wm with easy defaults but the motif windo manager is my second option.

If you want lightweight then check vtwm, can be tweaked to look different editing a simple file.
>>
>>61218807
>Any modern DOS program won't target MS-DOS only extentions anyway.
there are no "modern DOS programs" beyond maybe a small pool of ultra-niche or game-related software, literally anything general-purpose worth having on DOS targeted MS-DOS and its varying extensions
>>61219087
>drdos software
there's a whole five more pieces of software to the pile
>and also opendos
literally who
>it also now has coreutils so basic bash functions like cp ls ect
is this supposed to be compelling

while it's theming system is a bit limited (i've tried making a couple themes), there are a number of nice looking themes for it, check out box-look.org
>>
>>61219306
Ok. I'll check it out as soon as I can.
>>
>>61218997
>Somewhat outdated but relevant.
there's continued development over here;
https://github.com/bbidulock/icewm
>>
>>61219406
That's really surprising.
>>
>>61219406
I hope the make it less windowsy and more motif like.
>>
>>61219543
just use mwm
>>
>>61216598
Best to get with FreeDOS preinstalled and then install a Linux distribution of your choice the way you want it.
>>
>>61216598
DOS is pretty much unusable for Internet as everything has gone to HTTPS and browsers like Arachne don't support it. Games are better off under DOSbox because the graphics are crisper, even for ASCII stuff
>>
>>61220104
I use mwm as my second alternative.
>>
>>61216630
This
>>
>>61219000
>never heard of IBM-DOS
>>You don't know what you're talking about
Not my fault your some gaymur faggot who's only used DOSBOX.
>>
>>61219185
Plenty of BIOS flashers are boot disks that run DOS and a flashing utility on top.

Easier to deploy via LanBoot that way.
>>
>>61216598
Beyond nostalgia, I wonder how many uses can it have.
>>
>>61216598
a minimal linux install will be far more useful.
>>
Why not just install DOS from a Windows 98 boot floppy?
>>
>>61226191
Not the same
>>
>>61228997
True, I like the ability to modify the source of FreeDOS.
