>What is Matrix?
Matrix is a free, open source, and decentralized chat platform.
>Why should I use it?
Matrix has all the modern features of Discord while also making encryption available for user privacy and allowing for users to host their own instances. It's fast, free, and easy to use!
>Where should I start?
We've got a public /g/ room at https://matrix.to/#/#general:banter.city for anyone looking to get started or ask questions.
Looking to deploy your own? Check out the Synapse Github repository at:

Want to share your room or make new friends?
Use https://matrix.to to generate a link and post it in this thread!
I use it and it's great but it needs a voice chat like discord and then it'll be a viable alternative for discord
Is this what Riot is based upon or something?
Just use Riot.
>>61206960
Yea riot is built on top of it
>>61206938
The Riot client supports audio and video chat.
>>61206960
Yeah Riot is one of several clients. https://matrix.to just allows people to understand what options they have connecting to Matrix servers, including Riot.
>>61207309
No, it needs good voice chat.
Not the halfassed conference calling and p2p 1:1 calls, with no per-user volume control or push to talk.
>>61209181
The push-to-talk issue has been talked about before, there's a pull request still open for it.
https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-react-sdk/pull/690
Honestly I think it'd be better if they used an embedded Mumble client instead.
Literal why matrix? Having Discord, WhapApp, Mumble, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, Skype, Tox and some other apps, networks and protocols (IRC), what's the advantage of using Matrix over other alternatives?
>>61209710
it's simple and one click away? At least for me.
And it's not bloated.
>>61209710
Free, open source software that has the ease of use formerly only associated with Discord.
Best of both worlds in terms of privacy and usability.
> #general:banter.city is not accessible at this time.
dafuq.txt
I don't understand, it's decentralized but needs servers?
>>61209181
but yeah, it needs push to talk
>>61206806
>Matrix has all the modern features of Discord while also making encryption available
lol how about no
>group voice calls are still routed through a single over-loaded Matrix server, meaning latency and drops are through the roof
>group voice calls don't supported E2E encryption
>>61210796
Are you confusing distributed and decentralized?
>Riot is literally a fat Javascript web client
>it's not bloated
>>61211040
like discord wasn't built on javascript (react)?
kys

For some reason the https://riot.im doesn't always find us.
