If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - only for 144hz
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

Which hdd is the fastest without being too loud? All I have is a WD Blue from an old computer and need to supplement my ssd.

Are there any legit places that sell Windows 7 codes? I have the home premium disk from years ago, but already used the code. I have no access to any other computer so can't download an OS either.
The only other alternative is travelling to a distant store and buying Windows 10, neither of which I really want.

Can I permacrash my PC if I boost RAM speed through Ryzen Master and the RAM is not able to achieve the particular speed? I have 3000mhz sticks but I can't get them to go more than 2400mhz through the BIOS, was thinking of trying Ryzen Master for the same. Any body has any experience with that?

I just don't want to brick shit.

h-how tall are they?
>>
>>61201137
No you won't brick anything. If you can't achieve the clock, you get instability or crashes. At worst, you soft lock your clock and are unable to boot, then you just remove the CMOS or if you have a fancy mobo, hit the reset button and try again.
>>
>>61201158
Thanks for the info mate. I was worried because the Mobo used to throwup a can't over clock error whenever I tried to boost through BIOS. I thought I might just fuck shit up through Ryzen Master.

Any idea why I can't get RAM past 2400MHZ? I updated the bios and am using recommended DOCP profiles. I will admit that I bought a cheapo motherboard (Asus A320) but even that supports 2600MHZ stock and upto 3200 on OC, but my RAM just refuses to go past 2400. I am at wits end here

Is your RAM on the QVL?
>>
>>61200928
Wow, it's neat to see that they have ankles like a foot off the ground.
>>
>>61201234
No, I checked. But the QVL hasn't been updated since April, and I bought the only 3000mhz RAM I could find. It was probably a stupid decision and I regret it , but there must be some way to get it to 3000Mhz or somewhere close to it.
>>
>>61201272
>No, I check.
Well there you go. Let me guess Ryzen right?

>There must be some way
Try updating your BIOS. Otherwise you are shit out of luck until ASUS adds compatibility or get a new mobo.
>>
>>61201298
Guess I'll have to wait for updates then. The last update made the RAM run at 2400, up from the 2100 it was stuck at, so I'm hoping that things will sort themselves out in the future.

Any chance boosting from Ryzen Master will work?

Probably not. That is why the QVL notice was added to the OP. Too many people buying RAM not on their mobo QVL and then coming here wondering why their RAM isn't clocking at the speed it was advertised.

AM4 is a new platform which is why. You won't find this problem with intel cause their platform is mature. Give the manufacturers time. They will sort this out with new bios hopefully or worse new mobos.

So when i start up my PC, everything is good. I can browse the net, do some things.
But whenever i try to play any game, the computer autoshotdowns within seconds-
Also tried a new CPU fan. Is there a chance that maybe my VGA (fan) died?

Either to the back of the case (preferred) to get that hot air OUT or up.
If you blow it down, you're just blowing hot air down on your GPU, and if you blow it to the front it will fuck up the airflow of the whole thing

You get faster clock speeds but less cores than 1700.

IMHO 1600x is worth it if you want to have 3.9Ghz (+4.0 if you're lucky) guaranteed but don't care for the two extra cores Ryzen 7 provides

If you don't care about 3.9Ghz clocks and would rather keep the stock cooler get the 1600 or 1500

I'm looking for a cpu to pair with my gtx 1080.
Is it Ryzen all the way when considering something in the price range of the 7600K/7700K?

>>
>>61205851

Yes but if xfr can reach 4.1 (1-2 at the time mind you) then why can't I even get 3.95 with the same voltage or more. It doesn't make sense to me.

Any advice on cards? Only reason I even picked the FE is because there doesn't seem to be many GPUs out there that fit my build due to all of the mining shit going on.
>>
>>61206034
Most custom 1080's are fine, just stay away from MSI Armor and EVGA ACX and maybe the Zotac cards if you're noise sensitive, they can get pretty loud.
Good cards are Galax/KFA HOF/EX/EXOC, MSI Gaming X, EVGA iCX, Gigabyte Aorus, Asus STRIX, Palit/Gainward Jetstream/Game Rock/Phoenix and PNY XLR. You see that most are fine.

Boys need some pricing help here.

Found a used 1060 6GB for 300€ (350$). In my country you probably won't find them cheaper.
I know It's a good price considering the mining boom but is it a good price overall? Like say there was no mining boom and the cards were all their regular price.
What even is a non-inflated regular price for the 1060 6GB?

Should I just wait a month or two?
>>
>>61206133
yeah you can OC with the stock cooler, just not as much with a 3rd party one.
>>
>>61206210
>a good price overall?

Absolutely not. That's a retarded price for a 1060. Wait out the mining boom before you even think about buying a GPU unless you're thinking about a 1080, they're not too bad right now.

Non inflated 1060 6gb was like $270 or something like that
>>
>>61206210

Do not. Even for new 1060 cards 300€ is too much and considering it's a used card it's even worse.
>>
>>61206006

Will that ASUS card fit in most mid tower cases? I kept getting that error at the bottom about the case maybe not being big enough, regardless of size.
>>
>>61206459
Do they list the size of the card? Then you can match that with the specs of your desired tower.
>>
>>61206410
That sucks. Imo either stick with your GPU or get a 1050Ti for 150€ before they cost 200€, prices are already going up. The 1050Ti should be fine until Volta or whatever comes after it.

>>61206459
>Will that ASUS card fit in most mid tower cases?
Yes it should but you may have to uninstall an optional HDD cage to fit it in. Check case clearance on manufacturers page. Asus is like 320mm or something, check that, too.
>>
>>61206475
>>61206497
>card is 298mm
>case can support upt o 310mm w/ cages

That's gonna be a bit snug.
>>
>>61206551
Nah, it's fine. Power connection is on the long side so there's no conflict the only thing that will possibly be blocked are the additional STRIX fan connectors for case fans.
If that's an issue uninstall the HDD cage, install fans and reinstall HDD cage if needed.
>>

Since we're on the subject, what are some of the best cases out there for cooling purposes? I honestly don't care what it looks like as long as it keeps my parts cooled.

Think the new mining craze will fizzle out in a few months, or the dedicated mining cards being put out will mean consumer cards are freed up?
>>
>>61206697
>what are some of the best cases out there for cooling purposes?
Not silent cases like the R5, obviously. Idk about current cases but generally not those with a closed front like most InWin and NZXT cases.
Look at open front cases with maybe some kind of mesh + dustfilter that have rear and top vents and of course bottom with dust filters.
Imo go trough manufacturers websites and take a look at the cases, everything that is according to above criteria should be fine.

>>
>>61208426
>I ideally want it for general gaming and projects with virtual machines
Ideally you want Ryzen then. Problem is the only ITX boards for Ryzen are by Biostar which sucks. Try to build a mATX in something that offers enough storage options. Most SFF cases do not.
>>
>>61208477
>virtual machines
Does Ryzen properly support IOMMU/passthrough/VT-d yet?
Google says it doesn't look so good.
>>
>>61208512
Idk the specifics because i don't use advanced features on my VM's for college but i can run them. At first i had the issue that virtualization was not possible but then i figured the settings in the BIOS were not enabled.
If there are some features you absolutely need then either look into it and hope Ryzen will do, otherwise your only choice is the 7700K for a SFF build. Idk if there are mATX or ITX boards for Xeons, but that is an alternative.
>>
>>61208558
I'm trying to run Qubes 4, and it basically wants the latest everything.
They didn't support any desktop AMD CPUs previously (only some Opterons), but I'm hoping Ryzen changes this.
>>
>>61208512
I don't know any details but the agesa 1.0.0.6 did improve things related to what you're talking about
>If you’re the kind of user that just needs (or loves!) virtualization every day, then AGESA 1.0.0.6-based firmware will be a blessing for you thanks to fresh support for PCI Express® Access Control Services (ACS). ACS primarily enables support for manual assignment of PCIe® graphics cards within logical containers called “IOMMU groups.” The hardware resources of an IOMMU group can then be dedicated to a virtual machine.
>>
>>61208587
Guess the safe bet really is Jewtel then. If you want to run multiple VM's with workloads you may want to invest into a Xeon, i doubt that the 7700K will handle everything very well but that's the only choice for SFF builds.
Ryzen 7 1700 would be so much better. We all can only hope that the industry reacts to it and prepares for Ryzen 2 in 2018. They should have recognized the potential by then.

Buying a B350 board for an 8-core is retarded. All of them have garbage VRMs compared to even a mid-range X370 board (plus small, crappy heatsinks), and will get very hot trying to overclock one of the 8-cores.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGrxhf_xZWI

The Prime X370-Pro would be a better fit. It has a top tier VRM layout (using the same NexFETs found on the Crosshair), but is reasonably-priced at about $150.

>>
>>61209092
>x370 have better VRM therefore b350 will literally melt / shutdown / etc on an eight core

>>
>>61209143
Okay? It still has a mediocre VRM setup and makes no sense to pair with one of the 8-cores. In fact, it has one of the worst VRM setups of a B350 board, with a 3+3 phase design. ASCock were clever in that they used two MOSFETs for every phase though, which has tricked a lot of gullible people into thinking it's a 6+3 design, when in fact it's a straight 3+3 (not even doubled, because the voltage controller they used isn't even capable of doubling).

most prebuilts will have a fairly hefty premium attached to them and will use subpar parts. 1TB is too little space nowadays and is probably a bad brand, 120GB SSD isn't that useful, it probably has a cheapo power supply that'll knock your components out when it fails, and i imagine it'll be a bitch to upgrade.

for $39 scour thrift stores and craiglist for used laptops and prebuilts. look for core 2 duos or AMDs that aren't over 10 years old or so. bonus points for hyper threaded anything. if you dont need the screens on the laptop just rip them out. make sure it has a proper video out. bonus points for HDMI, but i'd run it at 720p for performance

or just get a raspberry pi or something along those lines and slap some slim version of linux and emulators on there.

>>

>>
Hopefully an easy question, its has been a long time since I've built a PC. Currently have this mobo

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kgMFf7/asrock-motherboard-p67pro3se

I currently have 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, two 4 gig sticks. I wanted to upgrade to 16 gigs. Looking at the mobo, it has four slots and will support up to 32 gigs, but 16 is more than enough for now. This PC is almost 6 years old, just want to give it a bit of a boost to last a couple more years before I build a new one.

Here is my hopefully easy question. Would I be better off buying one 8 gig stick (putting the 8 gig stick in slot 1 with the 4 gig sticks in slots 2 and 3), or purchasing two 8 gig sticks and getting rid of the 4 gig sticks all together? Or get two more 4 gig sticks to add to the two existing ones? It has literally been over a decade since I built a PC from scratch, so I am out of the loop.
>>
>>61210164
Adding uneven RAM modules might force the RAM to run in single channel over dual channel. You always want to run your RAM in dual channel.

So the latter two options will be better. Do the one which is cheaper which is probably getting an extra 2 x 4. But try not to mix RAM kits if possible. This might cause issues with timing and downclocking.

If you can't get another 2 x 4 stick which is the exact same model as the one you current have, I suggest getting 2 x 8 and tossing your old sticks.
>>
>>61210055
Rasberry Pi would be useless. I need Windows to run Media Center and other things.

I already "built" a machine for $39 on eBay by buying the WinBook TW700. It's not even that old but my other option was to pick up some busted laptops from the local refurbisher. They have some 2012/2013 laptop with an AMD processor but I couldn't get it to output to an external display for some reason. (I may need to buy a replacement keyboard for it)

My other option is a Core2duo Lenovo with a busted screen. Would the 2012 AMD be better?
>>
>>61210196

Cool beans. I found the existing RAM on newegg:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231423

Figure it'd be safer to get two 4 gig sticks of what is already in the machine over two new 8 gig sticks? The price also seems better for the two 4 gig sticks. If I was planning on keeping the PC longer I'd probably splurge a bit and get something better.
>>
>>61210211
The only thing I can find for my budget of $39-80 is prebuilts from china and tablets and latops with cracked screens. (which is fine)

Building a PC is way out of my budget. I guess the prebuilts win when it comes to really cheap PCs.
>>
>>61210055

No. Because the Bulldozer architecture is garbage. Clock speed and core count does not matter as much as the architecture. A strong 6 core at a lower clock speed is going to be better than a weak 8 core at high clock speed.

Depends on your GPU and the games you play. More thank likely you're going to bottleneck on your gPU before your CPU is an issue. Also, some games will benefit from eight cores more than others, so if you only play older titles where a quad core is more than enough 7700k for sure. However, if you're going to do anything at all other than games, Ryzen hands down.

Nvidia cards are made with a VMAX of around 90 to 100 degrees. If your load temps are around 90 to 100 degrees, you have bigger problems than GPU temperature.

>also so it lasts longer?
Photoshop loads your GPU 100% constantly? No? Then you don't have to worry about it.

People still have Fermi cards that work.(a card that runs crazy hot that they were basically called house fires)

Otherwise, a B350 board will overclock and crossfire just fine.

>>
>>61213785

Thx, finally a real advice. I'll check the stores and websites. By somewhat new, you meant haswell or later?
>>
>>61213821
Haswell all the way down to Sandy. Considering that folks want to upgrade to Ryzen at the moment I am sure there are plenty of 2nd hand processors in the market.
>>
>>61213844

That seems to be much wiser than usual ( actual evidence and some simple logic behind it )

I see that half of the world wants a zen now. How come that prices aren't shooting up like they do in the GPU market?
>>
>>61213862
Cause they aren't going out of stock and they are still for the PC builder markets. There isn't an outside force (miners) driving the price up. But with enough demand still prices will go up (see G4560), but I think AMD is still the underdog and they are not going to increase the price to jeopardize how much they are eating into intel market share.
>>
I want to play at 1440p 144hz. But the current cost for such a build seems pretty high including the monitor. I've been thinking of ways to deal with it but then a thought struck me.
Does the pace of game graphical quality go at the same rate as technological improvements in hardware?
Meaning there is never a point in the idea of waiting to buy tech?
Like, if i wanted to play the current top of the line games at 144hz 1440p i'd most likely need a 1080 ti. But the price of the card, ignoring even the current mining craze, is a bit too high for me, so i thought oh well just wait a bit for the price to go down.
But once it does new games will be out that will need whatever new card is released to push them.
So i find myself wondering, what the fuck should i do? I guess i just need to pull the trigger and accept the cost and get over it
>>
>>61213358
I've got something similar planned, but i'm not sure about the monitor. The price on that dell seems too good to be true compared to what other 144hz 1440p gsync monitors are. Is it because its a TN?
I've only ever had TN's and i don't know if IPS monitors are worth it
>>
>>61214244
Here an anon starts to doubt the wait meme

>>61214258
Ips are worth it if you do any form of content creation due to true color
>>
>>61214316
So IPS is not important otherwise? I've always read that it's for the color and viewing angle, but unless i plan to use it for content creation or intensive movie viewing or whatever, it's not really that important?
Can't i calibrate the TN colors to be pretty good anyway?
>>
>>61214346
No. Because TN has hardware limitations that make it unable to display the full range of colors.
>>
>>61214316
Is 144hz 1440p too big of an expectation for now?
I've been so focused on the idea for months but i'm starting to doubt it. Games released in a year or two won't play at that resolution at a high enough frame rate unless i buy a top of the line GPU again.
>>
>>61214381
Ahh I see thanks, so it might be argued that it's worth it even for just a gaymer because the games would just be prettier.
It's hard deciding what is worth the extra price, considering i plan to keep this build for quite a while, and what isn't. In a way i can totally justify to myself paying 300€ extra if it ends up making the experience considerably better for the next 5 years or more.
>>
>>61214382
Current hardware doesn't even let you play 1440p144hz maxed out in certain games (mankind divided). But there is longevity if you turn down graphic settings. If you wait the next gpu/cpu jump will be Volta and zen2 or whatever the kikes put out at Intel.
>>
>>61214399
Monitors are easily the single hardware that will outlast your entire build. You will be using it easily for 10 years if you take care of it. Heck I am still using a 8 year old monitor as my secondary monitor as we speak.
>>
>>61214424
Yeah but i'm tired of the whole WaitTM meme, maybe i'm making the mistake of being influenced by the recent release of the 1080Ti, considering Volta is a new architecture it might release a decent bump in performance at a lower price. But honestly i don't know how much incentive nVidia have considering it seems like Vega is going to flop, like are they going to release a 1080ti level performance card for 1080 Cost? Is that 300€ difference worth the 7 or more months of waiting?
I don't know, deciding all this has been pretty stressful. I have no idea how to balance the smart decision with my patience. In any case i have a few weeks before i'll be even able to afford my build so i'll just keep thinking it over.
>>
>>61214438
That's a good point.
+1 points for investing in the higher cost monitor
