I personally use nPlayer and it's been great. It finds my SMB server within a millisecond and I can stream any file (including xvid and mkv) on my phone—OR I can stream it out to my Apple TV which is connected to a projector.

The app costs like $2.99.

I can also play FLAC files with nPlayer but I use another application for that. I connect a DAC to my iPhone and then Audeze LCD3 to my DAC and it works perfectly fine for FLACs.

I've personally downloaded rare Criteron Blu-rays in MKV and did a "pass-through" of H264 and encoded DTS to AC3 to .m4v. I have a clean collection of rips.

Lately I've been lazy and just keep .mkv's and let plex transcode them in realtime or just use something like nPlayer to stream on my iPhone.

I prefer the sandboxed/secure approach of Apple. I have too much personal data on my mobile device to allow anyone access to the root.

I do use Plex sometimes to stream my collection and it transcodes MKV on the fly, including to AC3 audio which my receiver does support natively.
