Why spend so much on a 980Ti, a 240/280mm radiator, and such fast RAM when you only have 4 threads?
I'd upgrade to a 7700k as soon as one is on a good sale. Their prices will only go up over the years like 4790k did.

Nothing I play would benefit from the additional threads at the moment. The 6600k is great. I'll pick up a 7700k in a few years when the price drops.
Also I only paid $330 for the 980ti and it came with the AIO.
CPU's AIO was $100
And fast RAM did pic related for WoW and had a similar effect in other games. The fast ram was awesome.
Bottom is ddr4 2400/stock 6600k. Top right is stock 6600k/ 3600 ram. Top left is OC 6600k/3600 ram.
You need a fucking FAST cpu and fucking FAST ram and a strong GPU to really do 144hz well and this machine does it very very well.
>>61179533
I think more games than you realize benefit from having more than 4 threads.
Benchmarks are done in a sterile environment with tons of services disabled and nothing running in the background. They even disable the network i/o entirely.
This makes the tests consistent, but isn't real-world. In the real world you have idle network usage even in a single player game that is using some CPU.
While it's true that most games only use 4 threads, where's the extra thread(s) for the other shit running on your computer? No where, with a 4 thread CPU.
4c/8t is notably smoother than 4c/4t on average in games from the past few games, not just a handful of them.
Unless you're playing something like CSGO, Quake Live, or WoW which only basically use 2.5-3 threads, then yeah.
>>61179604
I haven't played anything besides Quake Champions, WoW, or D3 in a while. Occasionally when a single player game that grabs my attention comes out I'll play it like DOOM and Nier:A.
Anyway I have absolutely no complaints about the performance of the 6600k. It's never maxed out and I always have discord, spotify, and chrome up while I play games.
I'll pick up a 7700k when I can but the value of the 6600k is really low now. I know the i7 is objectively superior I just don't think it will change my experience at all for the time being.
My 6600k/980ti significantly outperforms my friends brand new r5 1600/gtx 1070 build. By almost 2x in DOOM.
>>61178468

I could replace it but there is no reason with the advent of power supply basements in cases I gain nothing from going modular.
>>61179824

I've been using it since 2009. It hasn't had the best airflow since my case is on a carpet. Fan replacement documentation - Pic related sounded like a beehive in an earthquake before.
So from bottom to top: Replacement Aliexpress $2 GPU fan and heatsink- pushpin interspace was right for the ancient card and it nearly fit 100%, couple of fins had to be removed for caps, cools better, and silent! GPU fan previously noisy at an irritating pitch but not the worst.
Replacement $3 Aliexpress 70cm CPU PWM fan - these are the cheapest PWM fans available and they seem OK, don't blow hard, some hiss. Not as cool as before with the big stock fan, its fine. Not as much runup as before.
Replacement exhaust fan - added because I had it, wouldn't buy, there are better ones, unnecessary desu.
Dumpster Coolermaster fan was switched into PSU. Probably most important to noise alleviation although the CPU is also quieter.
Replacing PSU fans was biggest lesson, well worthwhile - no more throwing out PSUs with noisy fans when replacement fan is a couple dollars.

Smoking is pretty popular too. So is vaping. You gonna start doing those even though they're literally shit?
The 960 Evo is a cash grab. It's a dog shit product. TLC in an NVMe drive is just disgraceful. No one else has done this. Just Samsung because they want cheap manufacturing costs and high profits. They're fast, but not as fast as their superior MLC versions, (which should tell you everything you need to know about the drive).
I wouldn't shit on them so much if they were about 30$ cheaper, but as it stands, nobody should be buying these. The Pro is just so fucking much better. If your'e going to spend that much on an SSD you might as well get a larger SATA ssd.

I don't know alot of aircoolers, I use a phanteks ph-tc14pe when I run air.
I got it dirt cheap on a sale from a store that was gonna stop selling phanteks some years back. However, its pretty much as good as it gets with air I think. Try getting cooling used, I find often people will still sell it even if you lowball them on the price.
I don't know where you live, but you could look for used watercooling too, its definitely more expensive and alot more of a hassle to set up, but the cooling performance is superior. If you want the highest oc, go water.
Tho the extra performance you gain in real world applications for the price, isn't really worth it.
But its nice for the autism :)
For air, I whould look for the big ones that use 140mm fans and have two "cooling towers", like my phanteks (pic related).

Nope, not gold, unless you have the heatsink directly on the die. You should 'downgrade' (insignificant difference in power usage and single threaded performance) to some Sandy instead for longevity.
When Ivy was released, threads in tech forums asked should one go for Sandy or Ivy if the price is same or the former slightly cheaper, I always recommended going SB, because soldered heatspreader and telling that you will have heat problems eventually. Almost always 'better ipc, smaller manufacture=lower power usage' suggestions won. But sure enough, many of the Ivy buyers were complaining about high temperatures shortly afterwards.
I'm extremely bored. Just gonna post comments and questions because fuck it. Built pic related a couple weeks ago.

Interesting case design, haven't really seen vertical cases like this very much. Doesn't seems to be much airflow though, how are your CPU temps?
>>61178468
Ay, if you need a modular PSU in the future, def look at EVGA's gold lineup. They're relatively inexpensive, have REALLY good reviews from jonnyguru and most are fully modular. They're supported by CableMod, too.

Holy shit, i have not seen that CPU cooler in a very long time.
>>61204747
>That top GPU's sag and that janky ass copper backplate kill me though.
Isn't really gpu sag, its just the gpu block is tightened very hard and no backplate.. So the pcb bends a little.
And the copper plate is just to shield the soundcard from Nvidijew Coilwhine™
Btw, (((they)))'ve added telemetry in the gpu drivers now, not only if you installs geforce experience like before..
>>61204747
>Interesting case design, haven't really seen vertical cases like this very much. Doesn't seems to be much airflow though, how are your CPU temps?
About 33C, 8C above ambient, despite having the GPU at 100watt next to it.
Still stays under 1100RPM on the CPU fan and under 60C even at full load on all 12 threads plus with the GPU putting out 300+ watts beside it.
The only case fan I have is that single exhaust fan. It blows really hard yet is pretty quiet. It's one that the case came with. It came with more fans, but they don't really fit with the large GPU there.
It probably helps that the hot air is rising up for the exhaust fan to pull up, instead of it rising off the GPU and the CPU being above that, and that Ryzen runs so cool. But even with a delidlake, I'm sure this case would be fine.
>>61204915
>Btw, (((they)))'ve added telemetry in the gpu drivers now, not only if you installs geforce experience like before..
This really blows out the excuse that it's for quality assurance, to make sure they simply get bug reports.
They'd have enough of a sample size of those that install geforce experience to solve any issues for those that don't.

Regarding sata, there isn't much noticable differance between sata 2 and sata 3 in most cases, but you could get a pcie sata 3 controller if you wanted. There's a bigger improvement in just getting a m2 ssd with a pcie converter, but again not really worth it.

Its pretty amazing what one can do with a 1366 system. With all the lanes you can throw pretty much anything in it, and a x5650 running around 4.3ghz equals a i7 5820k for x99 in performance.

Yup, 1366 Systems will always be useful; i mean even when playing newer Titles won't be possible, because of Bottleneck issues, i will always be able to do my work on it in the future or browse the web, etc.
We really live in a time where upgrading isn't as neccessary as it has been 10 years ago.
