Is it possible to make a home server for Video Production work (storage for very large 4K ProRes files) with these 36 HDD's? They are only 500GB each. Meaning in RAID 5 it will only add up to 9TB.
What would you do if you had these drives?
hmmmm

Do you really need durable long term storage? Why not just make it RAID 0? Or make some of the drives RAID 0 for work space and some RAID 5 for long term storage?

Install FreeNAS or ZFS on linux and plug them into your jbod.
Run a RAID 10. You're using a shitload of drives that could potentially break down so you want the best resilver times and best fault tolerance.

I'm just thinking, is it really worth it? Sure these are free hdd's, but only 500GB each. I can only imagine the noise of 36 hdd's in a server. And the power consumption...
Would I be better off selling these on Craigslist and investing in a quality NAS or DAS? Maybe a 6 or 8 Bay one?

why freenas over OMV

Probably not going to get much for them on CL, but it might be worth a try. See if you can sell them as a lot for the price of a few 4TB drives or something. If you don't get any buyers, put them to use.
RAID
