Anyone else unsubscribe from him? I quit when he uploaded that stupid red iPhone shit. This nigger literally does nothing but read tech specs anymore, somehow buying a studio and making an investment into his YouTube career caused his ambition to just completely flatline. How somebody can pretend YouTube is a full time job yet only upload lazy reviews once every two weeks is beyond me.

To be fair, HTC has its own share of problems, and the phone really isn't all that great.

First off, HTC uses their own proprietary encryption scheme (so not standard LUKS+dcrypt, like the rest of android). The HTC 10, for example, could not be decrypted by TWRP because of this.

The HTC 10 also had a problem where they pushed a lockscreen update that bricked encrypted phones. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/htc-lockscreen-update-essentially-soft-t3576695, the issue affected me as well, except I could not recover from it as I was not running a custom ROM. To say I was quite upset that they would haphazardly push an update that forces a factory reset on encrypted devices would be an understatement.

What's more, HTC has slowly been getting rid of a lot of the features that people bought into in the first place. BoomSound bringing really easy (and good) EQ settings for wired headphones, front facing speakers, etc. Now that they've removed the headphone jack I'm not convinced many people will buy into it. If you're the type of audiophile to buy into BoomSound / EQ stuff, why the fuck would you get a phone that requires shitty bluetooth headphones?

The super glossy blue back on the phone is somewhat subjective, but I think overall most people don't like it aesthetically. At the end of the day HTC needs to get their shit together. They could make a great phone if they wanted to, but they keep cutting corners in all the wrong places.

For those interested though, HTC's proprietary encryption isn't all bad. From what I can gather it does file-based encryption, similar to how iPhone encryption is done. In the context of mobile I think most experts agree this is better, however here HTC keeps everything proprietary, which is bad in general but particularly nasty with crypto code, since independent verification is so important.

Needless to say, after my experiences with HTC phones I don't think I'll be getting another. The hardware is great but I have to (ironically?) agree with Marques here that at the high end of flagships companies have to be more competitive on the software side going forward. Most people don't make purchase decisions rationally, and especially not based on what Snapdragon chip is in the damn phone.

Speaking of, are there any flagships with non-Snapdragon processors? It sure feels like they have the Intel grip on the mobile CPU market, similar to how every laptop has an i3/5/7.
