Biggest issue I see is lack of standard programming language that is easy to develop in and fit for GUI.
Windows has C#, Apple had Objective-C and now it's Swift, hell even Android has freaking Java. Majority of their ecosystem is written in these and they are fast enough.
Meanwhile gahnuu loonix haven't moved from error riddled C and no one wants to use C++ because its so hard to use and nearly impossible to use right, yet both GTK and Qt use them.
Both C# and Java requires problematic runtime, Lisp just failed in adoption regardless of how superior it is, Python is slow. If you don't want to grab C or C++, there just isn't a solid option. That's why we have Electron.

SteamOS boxes were a total failure and Gaben rolled out Steam Link that does everything that SteamBox does but better, and it's also cheaper and smaller.

People tried desktop Linux when Steam came out and turns out that is sucks balls, and moved back to Windows. Percent of Linux users on Steam has been only decreasing since it's original release.

Also most devs gave up on Linux because it's apparently incredibly hard to port modern games on Linux because of discrepancies between different GPU vendors and less than 1% of desktop is not worth it. Each year number of game ported to Linux decreases drastically and 2017 had only one or two major releases for Linux.

Linux desktop has tons of issues that won't get fixed automagically by some shilling or introducing products like Steam, because it mostly increases the amount of end users/bottom feeders

Steam actually enforces one distro (specific version of Ubuntu), that kinda solves the problem with different library versions, but doesn't solve the issue of GPU drivers

NVidia and AMD drivers behave differently, so one game that works fine on NVidia just may not work on AMD at all and vice versa, unless developers spend extra time on supporting both vendors. See Feral making ports that officially support only Nvidia GPUs. Not to mention that Linux ports almost universally perform worse than Windows version of the same game.

NVidia/AMD have subpar Linux support because it's unpopular, which causes some of the problems for Linux desktop (games support, tearing, etc.), which drives people away from Linux and makes it less popular

In any case, good drivers won't fix other software problems, which are mostly caused because Linux desktop is understaffed and developed by enthusiasts, in the meantime "successful" parts of Linux like Android or server scene, have paid support of interested companies.

But there is no and probably will never be paid support for Linux desktop because the main "killer feature" for the end user of Linux is being free as in free beer, and it's impossible to get money spent on development from it unless you resort to stuff like Canonical did with Amazon (which is unethical) and Canonical in the end has failed as a company and has been doing nothing but burning money. It seems like Ubuntu is ready to curl up and die in a few years, after that desktop Linux might fade into oblivion and lose support from device manufacturers.
