I want to rip my purchased DVDS to put on my personal media server. I only want to do this once, and rip my dvds in the best quality possible,(and maybe subtitles into srt files)

I have moderate experience using handbrake.

What are noob mistakes to avoid?

I want mkv or mp4 files preferably. No ISO files.
idc about dvd menus or extra features.

I am mainly ripping a tv series DVD.

>I have moderate experience using handbrake.
Can't help you there I use makemkv, or bitcopy.
>What are noob mistakes to avoid?
Avoid using handbrake.
>>
>>61149173
These are 480p DVDs?

Pay for a VPN and download Blu-ray rips.
>>
>>61149222
As far as im aware, my extensive searching, there does not exsist blu-ray edition of my particualr dvd tv series. No good torrents either.
>>
>>61149204

I have some research to do now, Thank You

Thanks, Im looking into these

What is it? Post the title unless you're a child pornographer.

Seinfeld: The Complete Series

I want to rip it all in max quality and create a torrent, as all torrents i find on this are shit and or shitty TBS dvr records.
>>
>>61149479
The Hulu rips are the best available. They're the same remaster as the TBS ones but without the TBS bullshit.

If you want to preserve 4:3 then yeah, probably need to rip them yourself.
>>
>>61149499
I hate the TBS edited versions
>>
>>61149510
Just the aspect ratio? They're an HD remaster taken from the original tapes so they're actually pretty nice. But I get you. Wish they'd release a 4:3 1080p remaster
>>
>>61149431
Makemkv is free. Bytecopy is paid, but does cuda, and AMD acceleration .
For makemkv iirc when I couldn't copy a dvd/BD disc properly I'd first scan it with handbrake, and then use makemkv to copy. For some reason this would work on my PC.

>>61149535
>Just the aspect ratio?

I think he's referring to the fact that it's edited for syndication.
>>
>>61149694
The Hulu version is full length. He should get those, they're the best available if you can get past the fact that they're cropped to 16:9 (often this results in a wider shot than the original, they honestly did a great job)
>>
>>61149173
>No ISO files.
Why?
>>
makemkv
all it does is decrypt and store the video/audio/subtitle/chapters into mkv files (one per title)
quality is unchanged, and it does not transcode
subtitles are left in vobsub format (dvd standard), you cannot convert them to srt easily, as dvd subtitles are graphical, not textual
>>
>>61149718
If it's the TBS version as someone else said, the episodes are actually sped up to accommodate additional commercials.
>>
>>61149741
Thanks, I personally do not have a need for subtitles, but if im making a quality torrent I think it would have been nice to include the subtitles for the languages it offers.
>>
>>61149766
that's fine, just leave them as vobsubs, most media players support them (anything that supports dvd's)
they just don't look very nice, and you can't change how they look, since they're just transparent graphics overlayed on the picture
>>
>>61149766
>>61149790
ps. if you make a rip using makemkv and leave everything in (no excluding audio/subtitle tracks), then be sure to label it as a DVD REMUX, not a RIP
>>
>>61149810
>if you make a rip using makemkv
remux/dump*

"rip", in the context of taking video off of a medium, often also includes transcoding/conversion, a remux just involves putting original streams as-is, into a new container

if you want to label them even more accurately, also include the dvd region code/video type in the torrent, like "R1 NTSC", or "R4 PAL"
if you're not sure what the region is, look on the cover/disc

I definitely want to make a video file devoid of region restrictions.
>>
>>61149399
You better fucking upload that shit when you're done ripping it then.
>>
>>61150027
the mkv's made with makemkv won't have any restrictions, those are imposed by structures in the dvd which are separate to the video itself, and are not dumped by makemkv
this is just helpful information for identifying which dvd release you have
>>
>>61150027
What a fucking dumb faggot
>>
>>61150039
he already said that was the intention
>>61149479
>>
>>61150047
Let me clairify, my rip/remux is not going to not need a label for region. As it is a video file, but I want to make sure it does not have any digital water marks like SONY is known to do.
>>
>>61150078
no, i mean put it in the name of the torrent, to help identify what the torrent contains
as in "this is from an R1 dvd in NTSC format"
it won't be restricted in any way, it's just for identification

for example, if i ripped a local copy of seinfeld, mine would be an R4/PAL release, since i live in an R4 region, that uses PAL, so such a dvd won't be exactly the same as yours if you lived in an R1/NTSC region, such as north america

since this is an american tv show, an NTSC region dvd is probably preferable, as it won't have needed any NTSC>PAL conversion
>>
>>61149479
Just saved you hours of work, my man. Did you even fucking try?

Took me about 3 minutes.

hmmmmmmm, I suppose this could relate also to denoting how a version is edited per where its sold. Such as what content is allowed to be shown on broadcast television. (EXAMPLE: Europe and boobs is ok in tv but a no no in NA regions. lol)
>>
>>61150162
yes, they are also occationally some content differences based on region
though DVD regions alone aren't really granular enough most of the time, there's only a few of them, not one per country
>>
>>61150151
you missed the 16:9 VS 4:3 tidbit

???
>>
>>61150151

shit man, at least read the thread, it's not that long

I would greatly appreciate it if you could just dump the ISO images and let an experienced ripper handle it. I want it in 10 bit HEVC.
>>
What's the best way to rip/remux, and torrenting?
>>
>>61150257
ffmpeg, and deluged. but you need to adjust the settings. best to just release the ISO images. I'll seed it 50x. I've got the space.

Gears in my head are turning.
Maybe I should make two torrents...
but I paid for the series on DVD and I want to contribute my part and learn to do it correctly instead of be coddled and babied.
>>
>>61150251
this
>>
>>61150291
let an experienced ripper handle the release, you can practice on your own time
>>
>>61150291
if you want to provide the most
either release the iso's as-is
or all the output from makemkv, with nothing unticked (bonus features included some people do care about them)

the latter only doesn't include menus and small clips like logos and notices, which almost nobody cares for
>>
>>61150291
It's not being coddled and babied. It's not easy. It's a very time consuming process, and you need to play with the settings and re-encode a bunch of times to get it just right. Lots of trial and error.
>>
>>61150291
Ready to seed your ISOs 20x here. I'm sure there are plenty of guys in this thread that will also help.

Ok so now im leaning towards at least just making an ISO archive of it. At this point i have not put anything in the disk drive yet on this.
>>
>>61150333
checked
I'm good for seeding too, have been looking for a good original copy of Seinfeld
>>
>>61150378
in that case just install anydvd and make an iso with imgburn or whatever
>>
>>61150415
though i don't have the upload speed to help much with a whole dvd iso torrent, i do have experience with encoding, and could make a nice 10bit HEVC version
>>
OP!
Don't let us down dude! Please post a magnet to the ISOs when you're done, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it! I'm primed to give this to a really good team.

Next time, spend those 3 minutes reading the thread.

Sorta related to ripping, what's the best way to rip .flac off music CDs? what program, settings ect.
>>
>>61150960
read an EAC tutorial
while easier than video encoding, there are a few things about audiocd's which can make them tricky to rip properly
>>

>>
>>61150666
what satan said
you can use dvdfab to rip 1:1 copies into iso or video_ts folders
and dvdfab is also free (as in beer)
