>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

If you want help:
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA).
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate.
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?

CPUs:
>G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - if you can't afford better or specifically need 8 threads but not a very powerful CPU
>R5 1500x - Buy the 1600 instead
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; Get a 1600x if you don't OC
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/mixed use; Not required for just gaming.

GPUs:
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>RX 560 and GTX 1050Ti - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games
>RX570 - 1080p@60hz at high, running most maxed older games at 144+hz.
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@60hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; Go for the RX580 if you can.
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@144hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p.
>GTX 1080 Ti - 1440p@144 hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games; You're kind of going overboard with this one.
>AMD GPUs are suffering a lack of stock and Nvidia a rise in price thanks to miners

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen benefits from high speed RAM

General:
>ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
>Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
>NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
>The Ryzen lineup comes with exceptionally good stock coolers. (with the exception of the 1600X) consider using them over any sub 35USD cooler.

How does this build look. Any idea when the GTX will be restocked?

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Liamc117/saved/8CtGXL

Any ideas for a more affordable monitor?
thanks.
>>
>>61147831
Er, left, managed to take it upside down. Perfect.

The ones on the left are flat-top, black, and flat-bottom. They don't fit my case.

The ones on the right are
>silver, long, flat bottom round top;
came as bolts for the stock cooler receptor fixture, exactly 4 of them
>round top, black, pointed bottom
>yellow risers, only two of them
>the CPU slot cover screws (two unmounted to make room for GPU) flat bottom, extra wide top
Which ones do I go with for fixing motherboard to the case?

why have bitcoin miners grown so suddenly?
>>
>>61147897
it's not bitcoin. It's a different cryptocurrency called etherium. It's been going up in value and it's resistant to the asics cards meant for mining, so GPU mining is still more efficient.

I posted this in the last thread and you guys told me to post a picture of my setup

Hi guys, I need your HELP.

Got me a new desktop since my last one was 9 years old.
Bought this:

>casing:
Corsair - Carbide 270R
>CPU:
Intel Core i5-7600K
>MB:
MSI Z170A PC MATE, Intel Z170
>RAM:
16GB DDR4-2400 Corsair Vengeance
>hard drive 1:
240GB SanDisk Plus
>hard drive 2:
1TB Seagate BarraCuda
>power adapter:
550W Corsair Vengeance Series
>CPU-cooler:
be quiet! Pure Rock Slim

Paid 1200 bucks for it.

Everything runs nice and smooth, performance is very good BUT there is one fucking problem.

Something rattles in there. It is not one of the 4 build in fans (GPU, CPU, 1 front, 1 back) I stopped everyone of them manually and the rattling was still there. This drives me insane. What could it be?

Also pic related blinks all the time even if I do not use the PC and no program is being executed

Here is the picture.

It is definetely NOT one of the fans. Again I stopped them one by one manually and the sound is still there.
It is also not the power adapter in my opinion which pretty much only leaves the hard disks as suspects. Doesn't it? Right now the PC is calm and quiet, most sound is still generalted by the disks

Should I build a PC now or wait for the new MOBOs for threadripper/i9 generation CPUs?

I was thinking to wait for the new boards and settle for some 6 core CPU and then be able to replace it with a top of the line 16 core one when the years have passed and they've become cheap. So this way I'd be set for a long time.

Good idea or not?

>>61148082

Right, x399 (TR's) are gonna be slightly cheaper maybe, but still 80$ is nothing for your motherboard, so playing the waiting game makes little sense.

You could invest the difference on a 1700 and then just see what's up in 2-3 years

Wait, check that. It's turning itself on and then turning itself off. At random, ~10 period. But it will respond to holding of the power button and turn off and stay off.

I also think I have some very quiet sounds from the mobo on bootup. Which is better than my kill last one.

Both drives are good it seems.
Could be a header issue or just a noisy drive. A quick search on google shows that there are plenty of people complaining about 7200 RPM drives being noisy as fuck.

Right now your options are:
1. Call the place you bought the items and ask what are the return policies and see if you can exchange for a new drive
2. Call Seagate and request an RMA. Since it passed SMART, you need to show them something to prove there is an issue. I suggest taking a video with the rattling noise in it and start a ticket with their QA.
3. Live with it

It starts with one thing
I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away

It's so unreal
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on, but you didn't even know
Wasted it all just to watch you go
I kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me
Will eventually be a memory of a time when

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself of a time when
I tried so hard
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me in the end
You kept everything inside
And even though I tried, it all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
For all this
There's only one thing you should know

I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

>Problem is the rattling comes and goes
Then it is most likely a problem with the motor parts of the drive. Eh I won't keep very important stuff on that drive if I were you. HDD with such issues tend to fail with no warning. But if you are going to keep it, making sure to monitor it with CrystalDiskInfo at least once every week and the moment, you see it turn yellow, backup everything into another drive and then just keep using it till it breaks.

Last thread I asked if a 280x was still gud for 1080p.
Some anon said i need to OC it to 1150mhz and then 6000mhz memory?

My 280x is already at 1500mhz mem clock stock.

There's no way in hell it can oc to 1150 without blowing up tho.
Best OC i think i got back then was 1090 from 1020mhz I think

So it seems my new build is one disaster after another.

Had to my RMA my Zotac GTX 1070 Mini after it died. It failed their testing and they sent me out a replacement. Just got my replacement, put it in the top x16 slot, no display. I assumed they sent me another dead card, but then I put it in my bottom x16 slot (x4 actually, it says) and I get display. So it seems like my top x16 slot died. This doesn't make sense, because before I RMA'd my GPU the top slot worked with my old 750 Ti. Did it die while not being in use? I tried blowing it out and re-seating the GPU several times, it only works on the bottom slot.

Can someone give me some advice?

>>61148782
I'm just going to put this out there, older thermal paste might be fine to leave on for years at a time, but newer thermal paste that are out there have better thermal transfer. I use to be a laptop fag and I had it for about 3 years before I finally changed the thermal paste because the warranty ran out. I switched to thermal grizzly and supposedly it had artic silver 5 on it before hand. My temps dropped down to 40 at idle from 60, and under load it never goes above 70 when it use to reach 90-100s. Yes laptop cooling is horrible but in that situation heat transfer needs to be the best it can be and it made a whole world of difference. So you might not need new thermal paste, but keeping up with the improvements they've made is what matters.

57 is a little high to be idling, but the fan speed would be entirely dependent on how the manufacturer set the fan speed profile. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Spent three hours taking new computer and old computer apart.
Current results:
>GTX 1080
Works in old computer (won't launch games because of direct x failure, but I assume that's because the old GPU drivers are still installed)
>new PSU:
Works, had to shift it over to old computer to get it to work with GPU (650 W psu vs 350 W psu).

works and is so pretty
>new 1TB HDD
Detected and ready to format

detected and ready to format

Untested/possibly issue:
>32 GB 3200 MHz GSKILL RAM (not on mobo QVL)
>16 GB of Corsair Vengeance LED 3200Mhz (not on mobo QVL)
>16 GB 2800 MHz of HyperX... something, that is explicitly on QVL

>case

>Ryzen 1600 GPU/stock cooler (cooler will appear to run, no reason to think it doesn't work)

>A320M Pro4 mobo (dead)
>AB350M Pro4 mobo (???)

How do I test a mobo and a CPU?
Can I test DDR4 RAM on old computer's slot (which are labeled DDR3?) I assume those aren't compatible?

What the fuck do I do, I've already spent too much on this. Should I just shell out for a new Case/Mobo/CPU bundle or something? Just give up and find someone to assemble it for me?

Alright so assuming i did a straightforward and successful win7 sysprep transfer of my current HDD into an otherwise completely new build, would i then be able (after re-activating the OS license, installing new hardware drivers and everything) to afterwards clone that freshly migrated HDD aka the OS on it to another (preferably larger) new HDD in that same exact build?

>/watch?v=qYK-C4rIxrI

^ Basically what this guy does with Paragon Hard Disk Manager but literally the only difference in my case here would be that the OS was already sysprepped once and just migrated whereas his one presumably never was - But that fact shouldn't impair the cloning process at all, right?

The reason i'm asking is because none of these other imaging applications (macrium, acronis et al) seem to have free functionality included to restore an already sysprepped image to a completely new HDD on a new machine, they all want you to pay up for pro licenses and shit.

So yeah in a nutshell rather than opting for that whole imaging route i'm now instead trying to migrate the old HDD with the OS on it to the new build via sysprep first (so that i don't have to use any imaging/restoration software at all/only have to use sysprep once for the initial transfer into the new build) and then clone the successfully migrated old HDD/OS to the new HDD in the new build so that i can keep using the cloned OS on the newer and larger HDD from then on instead.

Is there any reason this possibly wouldn't work out?

>>
>>61151184

>>
>>61151064
The dual fan would spin slower and the single fan will indeed allow for slightly better airflow in the case but that's pretty irrelevant. The 1050ti doesn't heat much regardless so going for the single-fan is perfectly fan, i mean those EVGA ones don't even have power connectors because they get enough power from the PCIe.

I was more thinking about size limitations, Threadripper is huge because it has two Zeppelin in there, fitting that in AM4 without CCX changes would be impossible
They can't keep releasing 8 cores CPU next year though, considering they already released 3 R7 8 cores, one EPYC 8 cores and will probably have one / two Threadripper 8 cores too. If they want to keep being competitive they also have to increase core count seeing as Intel went for 18 cores for the end of this year, whereas Threadripper's limit is 16.
>>
>>61151517
They can if Zen2 comes with 15% higher IPC and higher clocks to boot.

In a weird way, the current GPU stock issues are a blessing. It's giving more time to save up and to get a better GPU in the end. At this rate i'll end up going with a 1080 or it's vega equivalent instead of a 1060 or 580.

There's a watermark in the lower right hand corner of the desktop asking you to activate it. Beyond that, it doesn't do anything else to piss you off
Windows 10 is a botnet. Remember that. The reason microsoft does this is because They do the same thing Google does and sell your data to advertisers. Regardless of whether you pay for Windows or not, they make money off you.

It displays a watermark on the desktop all the time but I've heard you can remove it somehow, might be worth investigating, but I have it unactivated on my headless systems and workstations that I usually remote/ssh into anyway.

Other than that it doesn't display popups or anything and you can still get updates if you want them.

Can someone explain what the (OC) means in the MB specifications?

>2 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR4 3200(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2666/2400/2133 MHz ECC and non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Do you have to buy RAM at a 2666MHZ frequency and then overclock it yourself or you can just buy stock 3200MHZ RAM?

PLS RESPOND
>>

overclocked
>>
>>61152489

Does that mean that it won't accept RAM with stock clock speeds at 3200MHZ?
>>
>>61152502
it'll accept them but AMD considers anything over 2667 mhz an overclock.
>>
>>61152502
DDR4 stock speed is 2133mhz. Anything above is considered overclock.

>>
>>61152479
>Do you have to buy RAM at a 2666MHZ frequency and then overclock it yourself or you can just buy stock 3200MHZ RAM?
You can always buy faster RAM than the motherboard supports, it just means the RAM will not necessarily run at those speeds.

pick one from a known brand, aim for decent efficiency (bronze / silver) at the very least, and it should be fine. we'll tell you if the specific model is shit anyway, but there is too much difference between PSUs to look out for specific things unless you have very good knowledge about them
>>
>>61152517
AMD officially supports up to 2666MHz*
Anything over 2133 is an overclock
>>
>>61152559
amd considers 1666 mhz normal, not an overclock. Ryzen supports up to 3200 mhz, with some special occasions having supported 3600 mhz
>>
>>61152575
>1666
2666*
>>
>>61152575
There isn't a specific limit, Ryzen supports whatever it happens to be able to run, although the official spec is 2666MHz
>>
>>61152581

So if I buy a ram with 3200mhz speed it will autimatically downclock to whatever it can run?
>>
>>61152612
correct. The recent AGESA update for bios's has greatly expanded ram compatibility though.
>>
>>61152559
>Anything over 2133 is an overclock

This isn't true. The JEDEC spec for DDR4 includes both "regular" and "enthusiast" variants, with the baseline speed for the latter being 3200MHz.
>>
>>61148561
Try changing the orientation. Vertical atm so try sticker side up in the case. And then upside down. HDDs can also "burn in" - get reliable and silent after a while.

Not waiting for Coffee Lake, from what I have seen I do no see Intel getting better than a 6700k/ 7700k for current/older gaming for a while, if ever. I already have a good system that a couple years old (6700k with Titan X Maxwell), will be upgraded with a Z270 (early Z170 I have DPC latency issues that I cannot fix through updated drivers) and 1080ti of some sort.

Second system will be a Ryzen 7 of some sort (probably an 1800x with a real mild overclock (going quiet aircooled)) with the Titan X Maxwell. I fortunately have the means to build a second system without selling my first.

If I would upgrade my system what would be the better choice a Ryzen 7 1700x or an i7-7700k.
They cost the same and I would have to upgrade my motherboard and ram for both.
At the moment I'am running an i7-3770, and a GTX 1070 which I will probably upgrade when the GTX 1270 shows up or something in that direction.
>>
>>61155558
>Ryzen 7 1700x or an i7-7700k.
>They cost the same and I would have to upgrade my motherboard and ram for both.
Yeah no, they don't cost the same if you consider all related costs.
First, get the 1700 non X and OC it so it will be just as good as the 1700X.
Secons, mobos. For the 7700K you need an expensive >$120 board while the 1700 can get away with $80 ones.
Third, cooling. If you want to run the 7700K you will need to delid it and replace it's semen TIM with liquid metal and buy some expensive cooler.
This will cost you about $150-200. The 1700 comes with a decent cooler that's good enough for slight OC, if you really want to push it you're fine with a high-end air cooler for $80, that's like half the cost.
The rest including PSU and RAM will be similar if not the same.
Note that the 7700K is on an already dead platform with no upgrade path while AM4 will last until approx 2020.
>>
>>61155695
Will AM4 actually get another generation cpu after ryzen?
An AM4 350 board is €90 here but I should get a X370 I guess which is €130 for the cheapest that isn't ASROCK or Biostar.
Would I be able to OC the 1700 to 1700x performance with an EVO 212?
The price difference is only €30 between the 1700 and 1700X so is it really worth getting the cheaper one? I'am afraid it wont be much of an upgrade over the I7-3770 especially the single core performance.
Altough I don't know how much single core performance maters at the moment.
