Thinkpad T410
You can get one in great shape with an i5, 4gb of ram, windows installed for about 100 USD
Drop down a bit in cosmetic shape if you can deal with a bump, scratch or whatever and you can get em for like 70 USD
T400 is also a good choice since theyre like 60 USD but youre back at core2duo level

I would kill for something like that, imagine the G40 but with something like a 65w i5 or a Pentium G4560
8-16gb of ddr4, integrated would be a must unless they could slap something on there in the place of the chipset so the cooler could handle it
maybe something like a mobile quadro or gt 1030 in bga form on there
slap in a 1440 x 1080 screen and youre golden

Hi guys,

today I bought my first thinkpad and I'm extremely happy with it, keys are lovely, the clit feels great, all the bells and whistles.

One problem, though. The X220 has hardware keys and the Debian Stretch system can't see them as XF86 keys. What do, guise?

This is what it throws at me when I press volume up.

>AFTER TRYING TO FIX THE FUCKING THING FOR 2 HOURS
You didn't try long enough.
>>
>>61141751
It depends entirely on what you're doing, I've gone from T60p to X220 to X230, and up until now I've been fine with the resolution, but what I want out of my laptop is changing because I'll be putting my desktop back together again, and no longer have need for something maxed out but with a tiny footprint. As such I'm going to get an X301 or T430s.

If you're using Linux 1366x768 is ok. It feels a little claustrophobic in windows though, I can't use a web browser and feel satisfied that I'm seeing enough of the page (and it is a world of difference to my 1440p monitor.) I should install that old mod where the titlebar and tab bar are combined I guess.

Performance wise my X230 has never let me down. A 3520m, 16gb ram and an eGPU will make you a happy anon if that's your priority.

Also the screen viewing angles are great with the IPS, the colours are far from vibrant, but you'll never have problems seeing what you're doing or looking at content lying in bed at an awkward angle. And it's LED so you don't ever have to worry about the colour temperature shifting over time (I'd love an X61s but it's clear that CCFLs aren't a good idea around 8 years after original release.)

Hope that helps.

Here you go anon, not much damage, just a bit of scuffing. Go at it with some soapy water and a bit of kitchen towel and it'll clean up nicely. Has 4gb and a nice i5, and is the slim model because why schlepp around all the extra weight when the price's the same.

If you want to upgrade the CPU at some point, it's bad. Otherwise there's no difference and the device overall is much thinner (practically the same as an x-series) and lighter.

Looking to upgrade my laptop at work, using an old HP Probook 840 G1. Work is a mix of IT, DBA, sysadmin and report/dashboard creation. Going to need at least 1080p IPS, 8+ gb ram, lots of ports including ethernet, hdmi/displayport and usb.

2: ssd for the os and programs, keep the original normal hdd for the rest.
>>
>>61144281
thats a good price for it, considering they were new 2 years ago for like 900 pounds
just note that with an E series you lose a lot of premium features mainly related to build quality, i/o and the materials used
but when it comes to used, doesnt matter too much, except for how long you expect it to last
in 2015 a T440 with an i3 and no dgpu was 900 pounds, the e540 with the i7 and gtx 940m was the same price
>>
>>61144507
well there u go

although I went this path and ended up just ditching the HDD, the extra noise/vibrations/power consumption was not really worth it

on my x230 everything's bootable.

>>
>>61146214
Thanks. So the no-widescreen 14" is the right kind of T61 for a T601?
Not really planning to build one though. Also, this seller wants the price of a T420 for this, so good luck for him. Just curious what it was, since the ad didn't specify neither model nor cpu.
>>
>>61146506
Yeah, the motherboard needs to be from a 4:3 model to fit in the T60 and there are no 4:3 15" T61s.

Definitely not worth it for that sort of price though. A T61 really shouldn't run more than $100 unless it's top spec, in good shape, and the listing states that. If they didn't even specify the model and only provided that shitty picture, it'd be a hard sell even in a more reasonable price range.

Hey, /tpg/
I'm torn between a 2570p and an x230.
Is there any valid criticism about 2570p that will actually sway me over to the x230 side of the isle?
I searched for phrases like "2570p build quality issues" and "2570p problems" on Google/duckduckgo but couldn't find any valid criticism.
Moreover when I replaced "2570p" with "x230" there were a ton of results, pointing out at x230's lower build quality and the fact that it cannot use a third party battery....
Is 2570p really better than x230? Please to offer me valid criticisms about 2570p
Keep in mind that this my first laptop and so the keyboard/trackpoint won't really matter to me as I'm new to using a laptop's keyboard anyway.
Also, since I'm a poorfag, the screen mod for x230 is out of the question and so the screen won't be a valid criticism for 2570p, as I won't be able to upgrade x230's screen.

even then i know the price difference isnt that high
in any sense, 350 pounds is way too much for those specs, you should try looking for T430's or x230's if 15" isnt as much of a necessity
if 15" is the important bit, it may be a better option to buy an underspecced machine and upgrade it, if you can find one with say 4gb of ram or one with no HDD for significantly less and keep the cost of upgrades or parts under the total of 300 pounds

Third option, you can open it up. It has LGABC21865 cells inside (orange ones; at least my x230 does). If you are ok with McGuivering shit you can make a spot welder from an old microwave transformer. https://hackaday.com/2014/09/21/a-professional-spot-welder-made-out-of-a-microwave-transformer/ Then use it to spot weld tabs onto new LGABC21865 cells and solder the cells into the old battery circuit (9 cell = 3x3, 6 cell = 2x3). Add some hot glue and put everything back together. Check the connector for power, if it doesn't have any, take an equivalent power source and short the terminals very quickly. That should kick it back to life. This will be much cheaper.
>>
>>61147601
Also, don't try to solder the tabs directly to the cells because they will explode if overheated.

Got a used t420s and battery life in ubuntu is approx. 3 hours, maybe less.
Would replacing the 6-cell battery give me more time? Max. charge is currently only 20% lower than the intended capacity.
Trying to avoid buying an ultrabay bat. because of the price and because I like the CD drive in general.
>>
>>61148256
Sounds about right. Use TLP to recalibrate the battery to get a more accurate capacity.

The T420s batteries use smaller battery cells than the non-s. The 6-cell is only 44Wh while the T420 6-cell is 57Wh. Also don't think the T420s had an extended battery option like the T420 9-cell.

So at best with a new battery you would probably get 4 hours.

c/p x2x0-2570p comparison from a little while back:

quick hp 2570p review:
-all metal build is great, feels really solid
-screen is as bad as any thinkpad tn from that time, is "fine" for displaying information humans can look at
-pointer is pretty good, no middle button sucks
-trackpad is nicer than x220/x230
-popout keyboard lamp is hilariously useless vs thinklight(tm), but a neat mechanism to ocd fidget with over and over
-keyboard feel isn't any worse than a macbook pro/air, layout is not as good as xx20 or even xx30, motherfuck any kb that makes you fn modify for pg up/dn
-dvd drive in a 12" laptop is pretty cool, will probably put in a caddy though
-bootable esata port is nice, will probably be underused
-laffo @ smartcard slot
-internal accessibility is fucking great, everything is right there under one panel. once everything is repasted, upgraded, etc, everyday usefulness drops pretty quick, but man i won't dread getting in there like i did getting my x220 heatsink off
-broadcom wifi is shit shit shit with [my linux distro of choice]. replaced it with some jobber intel card i had laying around so now it doesn't take 30 seconds to reconnect after standby

it might sound like im shitting on it, but the 2570p is still a hell of a lot better than most laptops. that sata3 raid0 thing the one dude was jerking off over, cpu upgradability, dvd drive, might be enough for some people to overlook the design shortcomings.

final verdict: still prefer my x220, but a fair 2nd place out of all the laptops ive touched. will use as a beater or whenever i feel like mixing it up. might gift it to the next friend whose shitty acer desolders itself

Bought a used x230 off ebay, the screen randomly fails like this, followed by a shutdown, after which it's fine. This usually happens after it's been in my car/backpack for a while, so I was thinking the display cable could be loose, but that doesn't explain the display being fine after a restart, or that it shuts itself down. The picture is from when it came with windows 10, I've installed windows 7 and still have the same problem.

Thin and light is fine on its own, but the PC market is supposed to be about variety. Thin and light has its place. The problem is that if I want thicc and durable, I currently have no options.

Why did this even happen?
>>
>>61158140
Because clearly, Lenovo's numbers were down on account of not borrowing enough superficial Mac design elements. Rather than being 'literally who' as far as regular consumers are concerned.
>>
>>61157836
They won't waste their time on a 16:9 POS. A new generation for 4:3 models would be more likely.
>>
>>61158162
What's with the hateboner for the 16:9 models on here? They make for a fine compromise of screen size and form factor. I'd be majorly sacrificing on screen real estate if I was to get a 4:3 small enough to fit in my bag, come to think of it.
>>
>>61158183
>What's with the hateboner for the 16:9 models on here?
The options were taken away.

Thinkpads went from all 4:3, to 4:3/16:10 options, to all 16:9

It's an awful Hobson's Choice
>>
>>61158162
Good point.

I'm not the anon who asked you.

I was going to ask why you use a T60 but from your post it is painfully obvious.

Isn't a T430 with a bios mod allowing it to use the full keyboard and third party batteries literally just a better T420?
>>
>>61158140
Probably because the old keyboard had flex and gave a cheap feel. The new sectioned keys are individual in that regard.
>>
>>61158251
That's a good question. I'd be interested to know too.
>>61158266
But you need a little bit of flex or give in a laptop keyboard. I got a shiny new Acer gaymen machine a few days ago because I needed something semi-portable with decent hardware. That keyboard, while nicely sized, has this sharp end to they travel that makes you feel like you're whacking your fingers against a metal sheet after a few minutes. Terrible for serious typing.

Guys, I recently bought a t460s with 256g ssd inside. ssd judging by speccy is
TOSHIBA THNSFJ256GDNU A (picture 1)
I want to change it now for a something with 512g memory for the sake of convenience
The model that was found to be relatively cheap is
Toshiba NVMe M.2 SSD 512GB PCIe 3.0 x4 THNSN5512GPUK (picture 2)
I would like to ask you - as I understand it, the slot on the laptop supports both pcie ssd too?
I just did not have a laptop with a m2 slot before, so I do not really understand the way it works and ask for your help.

>>61155117
I replaced the DVDrom with a hdd caddy. So I had the ssd for the system and hdd for large files.

Would a T440s with an i5/i7 running Debian be reliable for uni and programming, and *maybe* some music production? From what I've read the T440 has some build quality issues but decent potential for upgrades and parts replacement when needed.
>>
>>61160820

if you're in the uni and programming i recommend a t420, and if you want something more portable x220. Right performance for the right price. You won't go wrong and you will come back on here to thank me. =)

Is it worth fucking with chink chargers when chagers are standard across the Thinkpad line (besides voltage), so OEM ones are aplenty?

It seems to be a difference of at most $15 starting at 10 for chink chargers. Would you buy a non-OEM thinkpad charger?

Do you carry your ThinkPad to bed with you and sit it on your crotch, /tpg? I am using an x220 with a battery made in China and was wondering whether these things explode or not.
>>
>>61162236
Is the x220 gud? I'm looking at that and the x230. Can the dvd drive from my t400 fit it?
>>
>>61162267

I got a third-party charger for my first Thinkpad. It sucked and I never did it again. All genuine, all the time. Like you said, everything from the *60 generation up through the --30s takes the same charger, so it's not hard at all to find them.

Tbh I accidentally clicked a buy now button of sorts over "add to cart" so now ebay says I committed to buying it. "You've committed to buy this item. Please continue to checkout."

Some serious bullshit considering the account has no payment method yet but wow. Not even a confirmation and it's pixels above the add to cart button. It sucks since a genuine one has faster shipping and is the same price, so considering asking to be let out of this.

It restarts right after the screen locking up, I've tried drivers from lenovo, intel, and windows update.
