What are some good sources for investigating people? I figure there must be a comprehensive guide for doing research online somewhere.

Write up a quick business plan. Be realistic and research costs for everything you're going to need. Give yourself runway on estimates. Figure out a ballpark number for how much it's going to cost to start the business. Start by telling him that he has to pay half that and you'll pay half.
See how fast he runs.
